The Tip Sheet – 2023 Ep 26: Instant Reaction, Hip Drop-ic Thunder As Broncos Hold On Against Eels

The Tip Sheet is also available on Spotify and iTunes!

What the hell is a hip drop tackle? The Tip Sheet tries their best to tackle that question in their instant reaction to Parramatta’s 16-26 loss to the Brisbane Broncos.

The Eels started horrendously in Darwin and the Broncos pounced as they racked up a 22-6 lead at half time. A second half rally amazingly nearly got the Eels home save for a disgraceful display of cowardice from the match officials. Sixties and Forty20 don’t miss this week as poor play and poor calls are put on blast.

I don’t know what was more disgusting the refereeing performance by Klein or the defensive efforts of Josh Hodgson.

Turned off after 50 mins. Im over watching games with my face in my hands to be honest.

This squad just isn’t there mentally this year. They are playing like a bunch of individuals that are hoping someone else will save the result.

Missed like 40 tackles. Get 28 or more points put on us most matches and your focusing on the referees. Get a grip.

For sure… We were inept and we lost the game due to this…… The Broncos played a almost flawless first half with two amazing bounces of the ball….. But… If Paas tackle on RCG was not a hip drop…..I don’t know what is…. And not even a penalty given…. Whilst I was wondering what a game would look like with two players from the same team in the bin.

I am actually looking forward to the spin Annesley will put on the non hip drop on RCG……’you will see…. Paas puts his hamstring….. On RCGs upper leg.. Also the hamstring…. Even if Paas used his glutes….aka Hips ….as the tackle was above the knee in the mid to upper thigh…. Technically….This does not constitute a hip drop. The injury…. During the tackle….. to RCG was incidental’ FMD

As I said, at best the failure to send him was complete incompetence. At worst it looked like the fear of reducing a team to 11 men. There are no excuses and no spin possible

The positive was booking into the transit hotel in Doha. The negative was choosing to listen to this game while relaxing. Alas my “Parra winning while I’m overseas” run of luck has ended. Even the audio was enough to make me wince and cover my eyes. Watching the “highlights” surprisingly didn’t help.

I’m very worried about RCG being out for the longer term. But the outside back issue is a big concern. I’m not sure who Parra can grab this season from another club but I hope MON is working hard in the background to find someone.

Ahhh the loss is easier to bear with you boys. Thank you 40 & 60s.
Your reflection 60s about Moretti is interesting. Do you think Maka will start next week to replace RCG?
    Klein…. #$&@ing disgrace.

    1. sixties

I think Woody will start and Maka will probably be on the bench but if he was eligible I’d give Moretti a run

  6. Milo

Look I ignored Klein as much as I could but I go back to the first 40 mins.
Some poor errors and defence at times was shocking. We aren’t a serious contender when I see this display.
I personally think some players know they will be picked because there is no one in Reggie’s putting pressure on to pick…ie. prop back up / outside backs. Or am I wrong?
RCG has been great and now he may be gone for a long time and the NRL has been poor for many yrs – and I go back to when Hollywood Harrigan left. The NRL won’t charge him.
BA and staff need to fix attitude / errors and fast as we are a poor too 8 team.
What peeves me is the squad had all off season to gel and we see these issues….

Our first half line speed was non existent. It was awful. We missed tackles and it was embarrassing. No excuses. But this Darwin trip works against the team. Our team struggles when away for a period from home (see the bubble). This trip requires displacement and community work and minimal prep. It’s played in debilitating heat against an opponent enjoying greater crowd support. Enough is enough

      1. TolEels

Agree with you 60s. The $1M the Eels is getting from this engagement is based purely on business and not about what is good for the Eels football team. The physical impact of travelling and playing in this environment is just not worth it for the players. Thing is, will the FO think of the footy players or the balance sheet?

      2. Milo

I agree with this sixties but it seems the club has the contract for another yr or two; so maybe they need to play there in winter and maybe pick who!! But the NRL and tv run this show

Brad Arthur and the Parramatta club have a lot to answer for a very poor recruitment drive after losing too many good players all at once love to know what he’s going to do now with no Campbell Gillard for the rest of the year with a busted hip well done BA,I’m very very angry!!!!

      1. Grigor

Sixties with all due respect a well run club would of signed 29 players by now and we have 27 players including 2 well past it hookers in our top 30,Simpkins at tigers would be an eel in a heartbeat fixing our hooker issue, roosters would of retired Hodgson by now and paid him out ,unfortunately as the game has become more professional we haven’t been able to keep up with the well run clubs and as jack Gibson used to say fish stinks from the head down

        1. Sec50

Totally agree Grigor. Our NSW Cup side is embarrassing and our recruitment has been a nonsense. Time to start thinking about the future because this year is almost done. This weekend will either confirm a bleak picture or give us a sliver of hope. I’m thinking the former.

      2. Ray

Let’s just say surely they would’ve thought about this after the grand final knowing Simonson Dunster and Blake are having off-season surgeries that brings us down to 24 players fit anyway, and the signing of Josh Hodgson after a double ACL , Momiasea is Ron Massey level, Murchie been average, i’ve been saying for a long time now we have been fortunate that Junior and RCG haven’t got injured had they did we would’ve been in all sorts of trouble now one of the big boppers is long-term injured I just think we are a poorly run club, financially successful but doesn’t win competitions that’s how I feel 60s please reply back

Ashley Klein is forever stained in my mind since he cruelled any chances of ours against Penrith in the eliminator of 21.

But I weirdly can not latch on to his fumbles last night as some sort of solace or comforting excuse for the loss. He did after all call a knock-on against the Broncos when Lane was crowding a play the ball, where the ball appeared not to have left the fingers? Our only 1H try was on the back of this.

I saw Voss post on Twitter clear evidence that Mam was offside on the goal-line bat back try from Reece’s kick. And I still don’t feel too robbed.

We all watched Haas stay on the field for a far more serious example of a hip drop expecting to be facing 11 men, only to have it mind-blowingly ignored given precedence (even when Hopgood’s incident was arguably not even a ‘hip-drop’, but then again who-the-f*ck-knows at this juncture of the modern game). Still I don’t feel I have the right ot jump up and down over the injustice of the overall game and score.

    Why?

    Probably becase of either:

    1) How good the Broncos were in the first half. Outpaced, outmuscled and outplayed us in every facet

    2) How poorly Josh Hodgson played. I’m all for a good comeback story, and don’t want to pile in on the guy, but we have to face facts. The dynamic totally changed even in the latter stages of the first half when Hands came on.

It was probably a combination of both.

Anyway, I am left with confused and mixed emotions after last night.

    1. BDon

You know Chris K, I was wrestling with this sort of reflection myself. Well said…and Penrith 21, Klein, the bunker and the touchies all wrapped up an A+ shocker for critical calls, remember it was the touchie who missed Moses being impeded and the trainer stopping the game.
If Hopgood is rubbed out, they need to re-look at the Preston one.
If Haas isn’t rubbed out they need to re-look at Junior’s one some time back. The Haas tackle situation is a total farce.
Time to reverse the roles of Hodgson and Hands, Hodgson’s best role is to allow the young buck to take the heat. Also I’m not sure Carty and Hodgson on the field at the same time is wise.

    2. sixties

I praised Hodgo’s preseason and have been patiently waiting for vindication. It hasn’t manifested and it won’t. I started praying for Hands to be brought on after about ten minutes. Unfortunately Hodgo is a liability in defence

  9. HamSammich

Broncos started off very strongly, they knew we were on a 5 day turn around and played as such. If what we get out of taking OUR home game away is minimal turn around between games, more fans going for the away team, and terrible officiating we should not be readily taking our home games away. Screw this BS about “growing the game”, that is not the job of the clubs to do that it is the job of the governing body. We should be ending our agreement with the NT government this week and lobbying the NRL hard to never have to play a home game away from Parramatta again. After all we are the PARRAMATTA Eels

  10. Spark

Why is everyone raging on Ashley Klein? The decison regarding the Payne Hass incident was squarely at the feet of the video referee, Kasey Badger. I’m not a Klein apologist by any means but it was Badger that reviewed it. Also don’t be surprised if Hopgood is the only one suspended- The MRC is a confusing beast !

We are just playing poorly. Sometimes it happens and it looks as if this is going to be one of those years. We need to go back to the one marker that brings teams back in form and that is defence. We are missing far too many first up contact tackles and it is gassing everyone.
Just concentrate on that and the rest will follow. Bringing Moretti up is a great idea.

I ask this all the time but why isn’t Asi being mentioned to come into the backline? He may not be playing great but he is a top 30 player.

I think, unfortunately we may see Hodgo have a serious look in the mirror in the not too distant future and face the fact that although the mind is willing, the body is gone. Terrible because I thought he would bring so much to this team but he’s cooked.

  11. Trapped in the 1970’s

I just can’t get my head around the timing of this home game so early in the year, the short turnaround and against another QLD based opponent, just plain ridiculous. Sweat was pouring off Jnr’s face while he stood in line during the pre match ceremony. Talk about not looking after the welfare of the players.

There are so many things that could be said about that performance and this team that just have too much of a sense of deja vu about them, week on week.

Pre match, probably like many others, I thought the forwards would cancel each other out but the broncos had a clear advantage with their outside backs. When their forwards were as dominant as they were early it just magnified the advantage between their outside backs and ours. Their’s were a constant threat and ours are viewed through finger gaps across my eyes.

Even so, just being able to do the basics like catch a ball would be outstanding, almost a breakthrough season for any of our right wingers. As for Hodgson, he’s more of a liability than an asset and if it’s ok to select a winger with under 10 games of NRL experience than let’s apply that rule with the hooker position as well.

Huge blow with RCG. The tackle that injured him looked the worst of all but who knows what goes on with the bunker and MRC, but it certainly hasn’t been picked up by the media like it would have had it been Teddy or Chin Cleary.

Big few weeks coming up for our eels with injuries and ladder position pressure increasing.

    1. sixties

Trapped, as you would have noted I was angry with so many issues post match. But we called out the Darwin arrangement prior to the game, and my attitude to going there wouldn’t have changed if we had won. Why make it harder for our team to win? No commercial success is worth doing that.

  12. BDon

Tks men, I listened to the Podcast at some ridiculous hour last night and shared your disappointment and frustration, rather than blog then I cued up Lynyrd Skynyrd ‘Tuesday’s Gone’ to bring my head into balance and get some sleep. Gary Rossington’s play out at the end is almost as good as an Eels win, either makes me sleep well. Unfortunately, he passed away recently. Darwin 2023, what a shamble!

  13. Luke Winley

We really are capable of some brain-dead footy sometimes. How many offloads were thrown but not ready for and dropped. Unfathomable in a team that’s known for offloads and chasing points in a game. We are lacking experienced hardheads. Doorey was good again.

  14. Sec50

Our admin has to give a proviso to the NRL that the Darwin trip must be against a non QLD team and played in winter. I suspect our leadership has been somewhat shy in complaining to Vlandys et al. Do not renegotiate this Darwin debacle
. The NRL has treated us with absolute disdain and if we are not proactive they will continue to do so. BA also needs to make a public stand.
