The Tip Sheet – 2022 Ep 54: Instant Reaction, Adam Reynolds’ Masterclass Topples Eels

The Tip Sheet is also available on Spotify and iTunes!

Sixties and Forty20 are joined by Steve Ella in the wake of a 36-14 loss to the Brisbane Broncos in Round 19. Spearheaded by a masterful display by Adam Reynolds – and sprinkled with a dash of luck – the Broncos proved to be too good in the wet conditions at CommBank Stadium on Thursday night.

Join the boys both live from Jacks Bar & Grill and later in the home ‘studios’ (a generous term!) as they talk about the game and plenty more with the legendary Steve Ella.

Tough yards guys, well done. A total double whammy, a team playing strong in pretty well all aspects plus big slices of luck, maybe that just wasn’t our night.
That Payne Haas try was so embarrassing, if you check we had bodies, but I’m 100% certain that Papali’i’s leg got caught up with another Eel getting up to block the gap, neither got balanced for a tackle. Junior had glanced over but remained flat footed, I can only assume he thought I’ll cover the step back, those 2 will plug the gap, but no one did anything. Gutho then got caught by the suddenness of it all. And probably the cause was the offload caught us on our heels shutting down mentally.

I haven’t posted here since 2018 when I called for Brad Arthur’s sacking. I haven’t read this website since the article when one of you guys said ‘Peni Terepo’ had a break out season.
So what has TCT aka The Brad Arthur fan club got to say about our amazing coach now?

You are so right in calling out the booing of one of our younger players, disgraceful and juvenile certainly, and possibly as a result of some arguable fan blogs .

Good coverage as usual, but if you believed Gutho has some issues , then don’t know what to say about Mahoney. He’s mailing it in , getting targeted and run over almost every set., getting dragged and as no strength in the tackle , an offload is likely. His desire to spin it wide and never run is so obvious. If it’s coached , then why. By not engaging the markers, they just take off to the side he passes, then that forces the centres out, and we see the wingers crammed to the sideline with the centre basically shoulder to shoulder with the winger.

When the 9 doesn’t have a running game ( apart from 1 attempt last night when he was crushed after 1/2 metre) , that allows the defence to number up and we look so static.

On to next week, and if the team is selected on performance, Rein should get a start. Anyway, after the 2 poor attendances which was a reflection of how we are playing, hope it’s a sell out and the side turns up ready to play.

Great to listen to Steve Ella one of my all time favourite players. So sad it was after a loss.
He’s still confident of a bounce back win against the Panthers and gee I hope he’s right.
But, my ‘glass half full’ I found out last night has a hole in the bottom that only a win can fill up again.

Tough gig after a loss especially one like that. You are right to raise the booing of JA and there is no justification for it. Absolutely none. I’m just a frustrated as any fan but if you are the type that thinks booing JA is justified you have revealed something weak and toxic about yourself. Alas my own faith is starting to fail me as the finals loom. There is still time but I do think there are now some serious issues with the team in terms of certain players’ form, leadership and general confidence. I’m just not sure now if the answers lie within the current coaching staff.

Great tune in fellas and albeit a rough night for you.
Booing is not on and poor form by these cretins.
IMO we should have given Mahoney a break a while ago as he has done little to offer in attack – i get it Rein didn’t set the world on fire but surely he deserves a chance or someone else. We need something here and maybe a reshuffle at the back.
The real issue for me is the leadership in the team and over the team. The players are not performing and its the coaches job to sort this as he will be accountable too.

Does any eels fan understand why Jake gets being chosen. The only person on this planet who would continue to pick him is his father over the likes of Nathan Brown, Perham, Ogden, Cartwright or even give El-zakhem a taste.

Anyone, do you know why Jake is there.

Don’t point to just Jake. BA has used other players in that role of bench cover for a range of positions this season. Each of them had minimal game time or even zero, including Perham, Cartwright, Opacic, Jake Arthur. He’s then moved each back to Cup after a few rounds to get game time again. He is dedicating a bench place to a utility that he doesn’t use unless necessary. So don’t just point to Jake and criticise him for a role which others have similarly filled. As for his claims to a spot, he has been one of the best Cup players across 21/22 seasons and he has pathways pedigree that nearly all of his critics choose to ignore. I have heard multiple criticisms of his play that aren’t true. Errors he has supposedly made etc. People are looking for a way to criticise BA and make it about Jake. Criticise his use of the bench and offer reasons. But leave Jake out of it.

Hearing you Craig re the Gutho problem but he’s on elite money up there with the highest paid in the game and we all were aware of his lack of genuine pace he just needs to be quicker between the ears.I think more of a problem is our 9 and the positions that our six and 7 receive the ball the width and it’s predictability no outside inside balls to keep the defence guessing and no runs from dummy half.If I were coach but I’m not I would bring in Rein and give Reed a spell and I would switch the 1 and 6 around and bring in opacic and put waqa back on wing at the expense of Bailey at the moment as his reads in defence have been terrible and have a bench of Marata Oregon Carty Brown or rodwell.
