Score Updates – NSW Cup: Eels vs Magpies

Forty is providing NSW Cup score updates in a huge celebration day at CommBank Stadium.

These are being transcribed via the phone so most details will focus on describing the scoring plays.

First Half

Nice run of second phase play inside their red zone from the Eels. We run it on the last down the left edge short side. Cutout pass from Rankin to Cini. Zac jumps up to catch it, steps inside the first defender then passes to Komolafe who fights through the cover defence to score in the left corner. Conversion missed off the posts.

Eels lead 4-0 after 14min.

Damn what a bombed chance. A barnstorming run from El-Zakhem sets up a dart for Hands who then puts Rankin into space. Jordan cut down 5m short of the line but a quick pass to Loizou from the ruck seems to have put him over but he loses the ball over the line in contact.

Rankin knocks the ball on trying to dive on a grubber kick he deflected. Sets up a scrum for Wests in front of our posts and they strip us for numbers from the scrum win and score down Lehmann’s wing. I think it was Tupou that scored for them. Conversion hit from the sideline.

Wests lead 6-4. 24min gone.

Superb effort from Cini to hold up a near certain try. Wests kick cross field from there and Lehmann nearly makes a meal of it but grounds the ball in the nick of time. Drop out.

Terrific read from Loizou. Runs an aggressive jam to a huge backline move. Magpies run it on the last to the opposite edge but Cini and Komolafe combine to make the tackle.

After some back and forth footy the Eels march down the field and attack the left edge shortside again. Cartwright gets the ball as the sweeper and grubbers for Komolafe who muscles his way to the ball for the try! Conversion drilled from the sideline.

Eels lead 10-6. 39min gone.

Half time

Second Half

Wests cough it up coming off their line. Cini and Tamoepenu take turns trying to crash over but are repelled. We go right to Rankin and then back to the left where Arthur rifles a sensational cutout pass to put a hat trick on a silver platter for Komolafe! Gorgeous footy from half and winger there. Conversion is good.

Eels lead 16-6. 48min gone.

A ruck penalty carries the Eels into Magpie territory. Simple stuff from the Blue & Gold from the resultant set but Williams does very well to nab a line drop out with a neat grubber. Sharp run from Loizou set up a quick PTB for El-Zakhem from about 12m out. He is too big, too quick and too powerful with that sort of advantage and he storms over with defenders draped all over him. Conversion is good.

Eels lead 22-6. 53min gone.

All Parramatta in the second half. Spirited cover defence from the Eels forces a turnover just over halfway and they immediately switch defence into attack. Cini takes an adventurous sortie against the fractured defence. Greig has a tremendous run early in the set and is nearly put over the line a few tackles later by  Cartwright pass at the line but desperation defence pulls him down centimetres short. Williams takes advantage over the undermanned defence on the next play wit an extravagant dummy and step to slice through and score. Extras are added.

Eels lead 28-6. 58min gone.

A dangerous dart from Hands sets up an attacking grubber from Arthur but it is deflected in the front line and claimed by an offside defender for a Parra penalty. Next set starts off in slow motion but an incredibly sharp pass from Brendan Hands puts Samuel Loizou through untouched from seemingly out of nowhere. Rankin adds the conversion.

Eels lead 34-6. 65min gone.

Wests execute a brilliant squib kick from the kick off and find touch off a wicked bounce. They go to the right from the scrum win before bringing the pill back to the centre and springing a raid to their left. They go block for block and leave the Eels a man short as Tupou gets his second of the day. Conversion missed.

Magpies trail 10-34. 68min gone.

Oh dear! Arthur double pumps on the cross field kick but lets it fly as the defence holds off on him. The Magpies winger gets first play at the ball in his in goals but bats it back infield instead of dead! Jayden Yates is pushing through and says thank you very much! Conversion is good.

Eels lead 40-10. 74min gone.

Unfortunately I have Covid. Clint will be joining Forty and filling in for me for the Pod at the Leagues Club.

Shaun, any outside backs good enough to promote, and how is El-Zakhem going?. I have high hopes for him.

I though Komolafe and Cini played strong and could do the job if needed. El-Zalhem was impressive. Scored a great try and ran hard.

Thanks Anon, at least I will get a chance to watch them against Newcastle this week, the 2nds are being televised.
