The Tip Sheet – 2021 Ep. 46: Instant Reaction – Rookies & Reserves Stand Tall

The Tip Sheet is also available on Spotify and iTunes!

It isn’t often that you can witness a 40-6 drubbing and come away impressed with the losing roster but that is exactly the kind of anomalous result we got in Round 25. Against the full fury of a top premiership contender, the assorted reserves and rookies of the Blue & Gold stood tall and delivered an incredibly gutsy and whole hearted performance.

Sixties and Forty20 sign off on the 2021 regulation with an instant reaction podcast that celebrates the efforts of Ray Stone, Will Smith and Makahesi Makatoa (among quite a few others!) that has more than likely given Brad Arthur plenty to contemplate with sudden death footy looming against the Newcastle Knights.

The summary was good as usual , the fact that you managed to get through the podcast without really mentioning the impact of the officials was amazing. Unfortunately, human nature is something that shouldn’t play a part, but looked like there was a feeling that the Eels shouldn’t be in the game and was officiated that way.

The 10 metres and the pushing all the play the balls with delaying tactics were ignored, and the strip called on Lussick really pushed momentum in favour of a Penrith. The 6 again calls were head scratching.

It was a game where the club learned a lot about the players who took part, the result doesn’t take that into account and in footy history will appears as a thrashing, which doesn’t reflect the value of the game.

Well said Derek. We deliberately kept it as brief as we could and apart from my shot at Kikau, we aimed to focus on the positive.
The strip call on Lussick was dubious and a huge momentum call as the Eels couldn’t get territory from there on. Our only 6 again came on the zero tackle 3 metres out from our line. Give me a break!
Now Kikau not charged. Well why not, he wasn’t even penalised. Little wonder players lay down.
The calls were never going to change any result had they been made, but the points gulf ended up reflecting the difference in class and salaries rather than the respective efforts.

Yes, I too rather enjoyed the loss which is a very strange feeling. I think the team as a whole and BA got a lot out of that. And a great assessment of he who we will not name.

Shaun, I confess to us doing a quick re-take when I was expressing my opinion about the bloke putting the target on Wilbur. I went off and probably crossed the line. Such was my anger. Thankfully, Yoko gave me a bit of a nudge and a wagging finger and we started over again.

Tks guys. Kickau’s push in the back on Will Smith was a bit like Justin Olam’s neck collaring on Mitch Moses last year. Both off the ball, cheap, unnecessary, illegal, innocuous but could have been dangerous, and approved by officials. It’s why I enjoyed seeing Olam cart the ball up like a scared rabbit in the last 10 minutes v Storm.

The officiating systems are simply an extension of the sinatra rule that vlandys now runs the nrl under , i did it my way , add , and the supporters can get ###### unless i agree with it , but being fair when has the match review committee ever had credibility!! Do i think its biased , lets just say they should burn a scented candle at their meetings ,theres always a smell of bbq eel .
