The Tip Sheet – 2021 Ep. 34: Eastbound & Downed, Overcompensation & Errors Haunt Eels

The Tip Sheet is also available on Spotify and iTunes!

Sixties and Forty20 hold their stomachs to wade into the wake of the Round 20 loss to the Roosters. This week’s instant reaction is a brutal one as the Eels let themselves down massively in both preparation and execution. The boys talk about the very obvious overcompensation that we saw from the loss to the Canberra Raiders and how that backfired but also converse about the need for tempered responses among the fandom.

A reminder from myself to all – please keep the comment section civil. Say your piece about an ugly loss but keep the personal attacks on staff, players and fellow fans at home. Everyone is hurting after a game like this and there is no need to exacerbate that.

Hard to stomach that match and that loss.
Feeling for the players but that was a pretty awful match by just about every player on Park (for the Eels). Roosters and Manu especially on the otherhand, wow. Love to be a fly on the wall and see how Robbo (and Bellamy) build these structures where players can just pop into random positions in the team when and wherever needed and still play well.

Onward and upward for next week, hopefully the boys bounce back from this and Moses comes back in the side all guns blazin, we sorely missed his direction in the halves these last 2 weeks.

  2. Ken 70,

Games like this makes me wonder if the players are not as good as ithinķ, and are to weak mentally for end off season Games???

Great observation that Gutho’s reaction to Opacic was not good leadership and the team seems to be under stress. Bringing Mitch back won’t be the fix. Maybe the team needs to steal Sr Fieldstone from AFC Richmond?

And thanks for doing all this even after such a loss. It is always appreciated.

Onto next week where in a display of remarkable optimism and an inability to learn from past mistakes I have agreed to a wager on the game with my mad Souths supporting mate.

    Hi guys,

Enjoyed the pod, as always. And felt you were even-handed balancing critique of the game and tactics with keeping the support for the team.

I find it really hard to believe you genuinely view J A as the best available halves option even ahead of bryce as a 6 dylan as 7 or wilbur as 7 dylan as 6.

Both bryce and will have years of experience on JA and while I couldn’t recommend going with either of those options long term for a single game against such hardened opposition as the roosters they wouldve offered more in attack, and game nouse than JA. By the way, i agree JA defended well, and improved as the game went on. I have no anti arthur agenda. Its just an obvious selection mistake as JA is not the best option arguably on the basis of experience and skill.

Also, I wonder why papa at prop next week V rabbits is suggested when Makatoa by your own blogs has been screaming out for debut.

Papalii owns that edge, why weaken it and change the combinations there to strengthen the front row when we have an able bodied replacement in M M at prop?

You could then keep lane and Oregon on the bench with smith, cartwright, stone or hipgrave.

Also agree, sivo needs a week off. And gutho’s spray at tom was not good – we play so well when we are happy and positive. The guys need to reset mentally, and go back to what has worked for them before.

Hard running, good contact, deep kick and chase and positive attacking play from dummy half. They can turn it around.

All the best, see you Friday next week.

Tks guys. I had noticed that 4 of Roosters tries came from sudden momentum swings via a possession turnover where errors figured.
The other try was just hard or clever running with quick play the balls over 4 rucks which threadbared us. It was like our adjustment mentality was in lag mode, the heat would have contributed but it’s the same for both teams. Also, I thought the Opacic try ruling didn’t even consider that his hand went over the ball but his forearm had more downward than forward pressure with no separation. The ball was travelling away from him so any touch was always going to be easy to say knock on, and the bunker just ran with the on field call.

when you drop the best attack centre we have in will pensinni plus haze dunster who hasn’t put a foot wrong especially in defence plus we played a half back who is very sub standard then we shouldn’t be asking what happened to our attack
