The Tip Sheet – 2021 Episode 15: Instant Reaction; Tropic Thunder As Eels Annihilate Broncos

The Tip Sheet is also available on Spotify and iTunes!

It might have been close through the early exchanges but the Parramatta Eels completely overran the Brisbane Broncos up in Darwin in Round 7. The 46-6 scoreline may have been the Eels’ most comprehensive victory in the Top End over their 7 years of residency but it doesn’t tell the true tale of how one-sided this clash was for the vast majority of the game. Forty20 and Sixties jump into another instant reaction to try and get a grip on this one as Parramatta soar to second place on the ladder.

Praise is lavished across the park, firstly with the wholistic team effort in the face of truly testing conditions and later across the individuals who starred in their own rights. The bench in particular draws plaudits with Bryce Cartwright finally delivering the sort of performance that both Sixties and Forty20 envisaged earlier in the year when he was dominating in the preseason. Oregon Kaufusi, Will Smith and new recruit Wiremu Greig all are called out for starring roles from the interchange bench with Kaufusi posting a career night.

The conversation goes well beyond the bench mind you with Brad Arthur’s looming selection headaches fronting a discussion while the resurgence of Maika Sivo and the pure value of Tom Opacic also get bandied about. All this and more in a bumper instant reaction edition of The Tip Sheet!

  1. Trapped in the 1970’s

    Good listen lads.

Agree that there were a few nerves in the first 20 minutes, but after that a pretty relaxed viewing from there on even though I didn’t fully relax until 36-6 was registered. That’s more about me and past scars than the actual game management which was spot on.

I was surprised by the Canberra result and had hoped for a dominant display this game and that was delivered. The positive 65 points to the for and against in the last two games is huge.

One through seventeen were good last night but Oregon’s development this year is amazing. He had a tendency to have the odd loose carry last year but this year he’s been pretty much rock solid. Confidence is a wonderful thing.

I’ve always seen the quality of a team in their bench. In past years when the eels have had successful seasons there was a genuinely strong bench. Players like PJ Marsh, David Solomana, Andrew Ryan, Feleti Mateo and even Kenny Edwards in 2017 There is that sort of anticipation this year as well from the bench and no longer is there that pit of the stomach dred when Jnr and RCG come off.

Enjoy the rest of your busy weekend.

  2. Trouser Eel

Can’t argue with wanting to get the podcast out after such a win.
    I don’t necessarily agree with your 3 2 1’s though.
Wouldn’t it be great if the coaches had to (after the game) publish their pre- game instructions and half- time instructions to the team so the fans can assess their preformed against instructions.

Good idea about instructions. It would make for great analysis.
As for 3,2,1 – it was the hardest choice for some time because so many did their job and did it well.
