NRL Team List
Round 23 vs South Sydney Rabbitohs, Saturday 7:35PM, Allianz Stadium
Win or lose you can always count on rolling into the next Team List Tuesday (at least during the regulation season) and while we found ourselves somewhere a bit between those two outcomes on Sunday with the clanker against the Tigers – Team List Tuesday have still arrived none the less.
It is Indigenous Round this week – well the first leg of a two week stretch – and the Parramatta Eels continue to build something of a new tradition as they meet the South Sydney Rabbitohs once again for the iconic round.
There are some moving parts for the Eels this week. Jason Ryles has injected Luca Moretti back into the starting front row after a short stint on the sidelines due to a concussion. Jack Williams shifts to the right edge where he will play off the shoulder of Mitchell Moses while Kelma Tuilagi – who enters this game under something of a cloud due to a rib/abdominal scare from Sunday – slides back to the bench.
The bench itself features some fascinating changes. Harrison Edwards is set to turn out in the NSW Cup this week. Barring a late change to his rotational pieces, Ryles looks set to place a great deal of responsibility on the shoulder of Tallyn Da Silva in Round 23.That said, Ryley Smith is absent from the Cup roster and could easily be smuggled into the team later this week.
Saxon Pryke has won a recall to first grade and slots into the team at #14 but the real fun selection this week comes in the way of Jezaiah Funa-Iuta. Bearing the #19 on his back, Funa-Iuta could be in the running for a late season debut depending on how things shake out on Saturday night.
Sean Russell is also back and named in the extended roster. He also features in the NSW Cup list and while Bailey Simonsson is absent from any team sheet today, Ryles did indicate to the press today that he should be returning by way of reserve grade on Saturday.
So yeah, a fair bit of action on the team list front this week!
For Souths, they too get a number of boosts this week. Cameron Murray, David Fifita and Tallis Duncan are a potent trio of reinforcements. Duncan in particular has been a real problem for the Eels in recent match-ups so putting a lid on his work out in the centres this week will be a priority.

Round 6 vs Sydney Roosters, Sunday 6:15PM, Polytec Stadium
Buckle up, it is going to be a tough ride this week. Sadly, the Eels could not build on their effort against the Warriors and found themselves well beaten by the Newcastle Knights. Now they face the imperious Sydney Roosters roster and well…based on exposed form it is going to be a long, long game for our girls on Sunday.
There are changes in the mean time – mostly on the basis of concussions. Rachael Pearson and Martha Mataele are out this week due to head knocks while Rory Owen is back from hers. Owen reclaims her spot at left centre as Fleur Ginn shifts to the right wing. Cassey Tohi-Hiku returns from her suspension to partner Jayde Herdegen in the halves while Jasmin Morrissey gets her second cap as an Eel off the bench.
Layne Morgan does make an appearance on the extended roster after missing a chunk of time with an orbital fracture. She could figure in a late reshuffle but I would expect her to return via the NSWWP.

Round 23 vs South Sydney Rabbitohs, Saturday 2:15PM, Redfern Oval
Replicating their brilliant effort against the Panthers was always going to be a big ask but even so, it was a disappointing follow-up performance from the Eels in their loss against the Magpies on Sunday. They continue to search for consistency deep into the season and will have to do so in Round 23 with a few changes to their line-up.
Sean Russell is in at centre while Apa Twidle kicks up front to replace the injured Jonah Pezet at halfback. That brings Brad Avery into the team at fullback – although Ryles did say that Bailey Simonsson is likely to return via Cup so that could facilitate another back line reshuffle.
Kruz Niutili-Schmidt has been name to start at dummy half, potentially lending credence to the idea of a NRL recall for Ryley Smith. He will be deputised by Jack Hudson this week while Harley Walker and Elijah Shane-Tapau joins Jackson Koina on the bench as young prospects getting a run in reggies.

I’d have made a couple of changes to this side. I’d have shuffled up the backline – Kelly to left centre over with The Fox, Samrani to right centre, Penisini to the wing; Kautoga to the bench, Mataele to left second row. Walker’s misses of pretty obvious tackles renders him unfit for ones on my opinion and I’ve always fancied Kautoga as a prop and Moretti at lock
Mataele has played nearly all of his football in the second row and his 98% defensive record in NRL would make a nice change. Our best way to beat South’s is to bash up their forwards.
