The Tip Sheet – 2026 Ep 67: Round 17 Supershow (News & Previews)

We are fresh out of the bye but in a real rush as the Parramatta Eels face down the South Sydney Rabbitohs on Thursday night. The Tip Sheet pools its resources this week as the News and Preview pods combine to form Captain Podcast, I mean the Round 17 Supershow! Sixties and Forty20 discuss all the happenings out of the bye week including Mitchell Moses notching up his 250th NRL game and speculation (now confirmation!) that Nathan Cayless could be heading to the ESL.

The Blues botched Game 2 in State of Origin and the boys dig in for a rapid fire post morterm. Where did the Blues go wrong, what did the Maroons get right? An abbreviated NRL news then turns to the fascinating developments at Belmore with Stephen Crichton turning out at five-eighth in the Bulldogs’ gritty win over the Sea Eagles. What does this mean for their congested three-quarter line?

The Supershow rolls on and into the previews as the Eels face a smorgasbord of opponents this week. The Flegg are looking to subdue the Storm, the Women’s Premiership have a derby game against the Bulldogs, the Cup hit the road to Tamworth to seek revenge on the Knights while the NRL host the Rabbitohs. Phew! The boys try to unpack it all as the footy ramps up in Round 17 (and Round 3)!

Congrats to Mitch on 250. I hope it is a memorable game.

What did the Blues do wrong? Well. player selection, interchange management, structure (or lack there of). Preparation in general. Basically, what they did wrong was appoint Laurie Daley.

Selecting Laurie Daley was dumbfounding. If a club was looking for a head coach and they went for Josh Hannay over Josh Holbrook – you would say, “okay, i guess he presented a really good plan, so lets see what he has got.”

But taking Laurie over just about any other coach… you may as well be picking Terry Lamb at that point. He’s shown he can’t coach, he has no connection to the game from a coaching perspective, at all, and he doesn’t command a room.
NSW always have a chance of winning because they will always have a good team on the field, but there is no greater gap in skill set – position on position, than the current coaches (Slater v Daley). Its just not close. And we already knew that before the series. I don’t think it is even debatable. Frankly, he should have been sacked on Thursday morning so egregious was his performance (which i know doesn’t happen to Origin coaches, but wow).
