Live Blog May 2: Eels vs Warriors Jersey Flegg & NSW Cup

Today is literally a “Super Saturday” of Eels footy, Unfortunately the match schedule presents a host of clashes.

The major problem is that the four matches are taking place at three different venues – Kellyville, Leichhardt and Parramatta. Furthermore, the NSW Cup and the Tarsha Gale grand final are at conflicting times, whilst the NRL is a stand alone event at CommBank Stadium, with our associated live appearance in Parra Leagues commencing at 2:45pm.

We will do our best to cover both lower grades and if possible a dedicated Tarsha Gale Cup grand final.

The Eels are looking vulnerable in this half as the metres come easy for the Warriors. Wow, Miller delivers the hurt with a savage tackle and the pass goes loose. First Half

The sides trade sets then the Warriors butcher a try after the player goes on his own rather than passing to Cleary. Stoppage now as Tago is injured. APA Twidle back from injury replaces him.

Eels get to their kick and  a Warriors error gives them a shot with a scrum 22 out. Schmidt goes close with a dart from dummy half. Quick play the ball and Samrani engages the defence before flicking the ball to Vaivela who dives over in the corner for the try.

Pezet nails the sideline conversion!

Eels 6 Warriors nil after 10 minutes

Pezet bomb from halfway on the last tackle and the Warriors field it ten out. Eels defence forced an error early in the set. Six again on consecutive tackles as the Eels take it to the posts. Big charge from Mataele and the try comes as simple as that as he plants the ball in contact between the posts.

Pezet converts

Eels 12 Warriors nil after 14 minutes

Eels impressively complete the set after points with good yardage then the bomb from Peter. The warriors start their set 15 out and the floating bomb from Cleary is taken by Avery. Eels run it on the last and Vaivela heads down the wing before offloading to Pezet who chips ahead drawing an error from the fullback as the ball rolls over the sideline. Eels ball in front of the posts. A couple of surging runs at the line then a crash ball to Visconti who loses his grip as he attempts to ground it between the posts.

Warriors now in possession and break down the right wing. They get to their kick last tackle in the red zone and the Cleary grubber is eventually cleaned up by Avery. Eels penalty follows soon after.

Onto Warriors territory and that man Samrani fends away from defenders before getting a one handed offload to Avery. From a near standing start he accelerates to the ten metre line and looks like he’ll pass but he finds another gear and draws away from the two defenders and scores the Eels third try!

Pezet converts

Eels 18 lead Warriors nil after 23 minutes

Parra against make great metres from the kick off and Talataina almost creates something for Twidle but the Warriors knock the pass down. Eels scrum. Big backline play from the scrum and Avery draws the defence and gets a great ball to Vaivela and I had no idea he was that fast as he sprints nearly 40 metres to the right corner for the diving try.

Pezet converts

Eels 24 Warriors nil after 27 minutes

Finally an Eels error comes from Talataina as he tries to push a pass mid set. The warriors throw a loose pass from the scrum and the Eels toe it ahead and break away for the try – no it’s called back for offside from the scrum. Warriors penalty.

The visitors come up with another error early in the set and it’s an Eels scrum 20 out.

Talagi and Petrus are both on field now. Samrani big carry from the scrum followed by Petrus with his first run. Funa-Iuta with a big involvement. The bomb goes up on the last but Parra is penalised for tackling in the air.

The Warriors get to the kick and get the ball back but it all falls apart as they try to keep it alive.

Eels roll into the Warriors half with a big hit up from Talagi. Wide right but the pass to Vaivela is tough to handle and the ball comes free. Nanva is injured and has to leave the field. Not sure how the Eels cover that as the Warriors hit where Nanva was defending off the scrum. Good metres from the Warriors as Pezet gets pinged on the 20 for a high tackle. Wide left for the Warriors and the winger is released but Samrani comes up with desperate defence to force the ball loose as the winger was diving for  the corner. Nanva back on as Parra get a penalty and return to the red zone. The last tackle kick from Talataina is deflected but the ref clears any offside from the Warriors.

The Warriors last tackle kick is fielded by Twidle and the Eels attack goes into overdrive. Right side shift but Petrus cuts back against the grain on a run that sends him past the fullback but the retreating cover just gets the handle on him ten out. Last tackle chip bomb is fumbled by the Warriors. The Eels rush to the scrum. Right to Vaivela who eludes the defence as he veers infield. Left to Avery who stabs a kick that is way too strong a rolls dead as the siren sounds.

Half time Eels 24 lead Warriors nil.

Second Half

I’m not to sure how long I can blog here due to Leagues club commitments

The Warriors play hot potato football on the last in the Eels quarter. It looks like Parra have shut it down but a late offload sees the ball hit space down their right and they score out wide.

Conversion misses

Eels 24 Warriors 4 after 42 minutes

Eels penalty as they are tackled in the air off the Warriors last tackle kick. Eels down to the red zone and the kick takes a deflection for accidental offside. Parra hit their left as Twidle looks to have put Visconti over for a try but an obstruction is called.

Warriors launch their raid and Avery takes a last tackle kick five out. Eels are doing it tough rucking the ball out from their own end so Pezet  drives a 60 metre kick downfield. The warriors player fields it and the ball comes loose in contact 15 out. Eels scrum. Parra opt for some crash plays and it comes up trumps as Mataele plunges over for his second beside the posts.

Pezet nails it.

Eels 30 lead Warriors 4 after 51 minutes.

Eels get to a kick and a great chase from Nanva forces an error and a line drop out. Parra make a mess of the drop out and the Warriors swoop to go on the attack but then a ball comes loose in contact and Twidle gets the ball and sprints 60 metres to score in the left corner!

Pezet converts!

The Flegg is a good side, it has the usual Eels problem, they lack anyone with elite pace. Warriors started and finished attacking from distance and a fair bit down our right edge. That needs to be addressed across all grades really.

NSW Cup side looked awesome today, Visconti and Mataele were beasts, and although NSW Cup, Pezet looked more comfortable as a 7
