Live Blogs – Jersey Flegg & NSW Cup Round 6, 2025: Eels vs Raiders

The action in the Jersey Flegg and NSW Cup comes to you from Lidcombe Oval.

It’s a strange place to stage Eels home games, but it’s what can happen when venues aren’t available.

Parra has hit decent form early in the year in both grades, a far cry from last season.

Im expecting a number of late changes to both teams with the impact of late withdrawals from the NRL team, along with taking additional players on their trip to the Northern Territory, filtering down to the lower grades.

The action kicks off with Flegg from 3:00pm.

The Eels did well to hold on there.

The Raiders are held up on the third and Parra defend the rest of the set. Last tackle kick is fielded by Ambichi and he receives a penalty for some rough stuff around his head. Looks like a late shot on Hunter and the Eels get a penalty mid set. The Raiders player is on report and sin binned.

a wild attempted tap on from Parra on the last and the Raiders player leaps high to get it. He’s flipped over awkwardly by Penisini who is placed on report and penalised.

Thats a great set after points from Parra. First they go through the hands and break down the left wing. They then spread the ball right on the last and Lynn chip kicks towards Avery. The winger not only reels in the catch, he then bears two defenders in a scamper to the right corner.

Tough yards from Parra this set as they struggle in yardage but the penalty call comes late in the set. They punch into the defence on the right side then with a deep line set they hit the left on the last as Papalii finds Smalley with a floating pass and he powers over the Stewart to score in the corner. Stewart doesn’t look well and has to be assisted from the field.

Conversion from Papalii misses.

Eels 10 lead Raiders 6 after 22 minutes.

Great set after points and the Raiders are penalised for a blocker on the Eels chaser on the last tackle kick. Prime attacking real estate as the penalty is taken inside the quarter but a pass from Volkman mid set goes astray and the Raiders breathe a sigh of relief.

Early kick from the Raiders next set but it doesn’t work and the Eels are back on the attack in Canberras half within a couple of tackles. Penalty to Parra. Oh that’s a magic offload from Cartwright. He takes a pass on the edge off Volkman and looks like he’s going to break the line and score. Somehow he gets the ball away as he’s being flung to the turf. The Raiders make an error just into Parra’s half but the Eels turn it straight back over. The Eels haven’t come back out of the sheds here in what is a very poor start to the second half.

Well that was not good but the Eels somehow survive. A last tackle run from the Raiders player just beat countless Eels defenders before he was stopped a metre out.

Volkman splits the Raiders and chips the fullback Stewart but it doesn’t clear him and he snatches the ball out of the air. Flop on Dunster now – Eels penalty.

Raiders mess up and the player is ruled offside. Six again during this set for Parra but it falls to pieces as Carty goes for a play down the short side on the right that just isn’t on then flicks an offload to nobody and the Raiders clean it up.

Now the Raiders steal the ball from Kalache on the first tackle. Great take from Twiddle off the Raiders last tackle kick. The Eels run it on the last and now Carty completes a shocker game as he chip kicks it straight to the Raiders player who runs 50 metres for the try.

Conversion successful

The Raiders make a huge play this set and get an offload away as the ball hits the deck. Badger calls play on and Martin runs away for the try between the posts. No wait the touch judge has entered the field to tell Badger it was a knock on.

Eels complete the set now six again for the Raiders in their next set. The pass from Levi sails over the sideline as they look for an overlap down the wing. Parra just look to lock up the ball the next set and the siren sounds.

Good first half from Parra. Early on when canberra had both of their monsters on they held the ball and shifted around the middle to keep them moving and it paid dividends as they struggled getting back onside. Got a bit sloppy towards the end of the half, just need to tighten back up.

  2. Parra lover from the GC

It was a good half from the boys. But if we have a dominant front row of 8 and 10….both hard runners in their own right. Then why does the 9 only use 8, and leaves 10 out of the play. If you want to be as good as you can for your team then use the whole team. If the 9 is to go higher he can’t play like this.

      1. Parra lover from the GC

Yes sorry you are right Brown is dominant, however Hudson is only playing to the accommodate Brown. Neemia gets looked at and ignored by him. So what I’m saying is if Hudson is to play in the cup team he has to play both props not just 1

        1. Parra Supporter

Yes I totally agree with you that number 8 Neemia is very dominant and that 9 doesn’t use him much. He needs to utilise every player if wants to play up.

  3. Hamsammich

Really good game from all players. The wins in these early rounds are important, as we found out last year, but what is even more important is only conceding 6 points to a team currently in 3rd with the 2nd best attack in the comp.

Going into the round Flegg was conceding just 13.5 points per game, after this round they are conceding 12 points per game. Shows great attitude and emphasis on physicality from every single player.

  4. Hamsammich

Near perfect half from reserve grade. Started off a bit shaky but once raiders scored that kicked us into gear. Some really good individual performances from Tuilagi, Doorey, and Papalii have put the cherry on top of a strong team performance. Like Flegg did they need to go on with it in the 2nd half

  5. Milo

It’s good to have some decent forwards in cup with a mix of youth
Do we know what happened to Smalley..?

  6. Kenny the Immortal

You really feel something special is happening at the Eels, the young players coming through are genuinely exciting. Once we move on some of these senior players, who really are a liability and don’t display the professionalism and work ethic required to excel, I can see great things happening.

Besides Junior Paulo I struggle to name one of the senior players from the 2022 Grand Final that are leading by example. I hope Matto can join Junior tonight in leading the forwards.

At this stage I wonder whether players like Cartwright are doing more harm than good to the new culture brewing.
