The Tip Sheet – 2024 Ep 104: EGM, Signing Rumours & Pacific Championship Previews

The Tip Sheet is also available on Spotify and iTunes!

The international season is about to begin in gusto and The Tip Sheet is ready to preview all of the action as Australia, Tonga, Fiji and Papua New Guinea kick off the first week of the tournament.

As always though, the show kicks off with the latest from Parradise as Sixties and Forty20 look at the call for an EGM. The boys share their thoughts on the matter before returning to footy talk where there have been more roster developments for the NRL and NRLW.

Sandon Smith is facing a serious driving charge in the NRL news. The Dragons continue to be actively linked to more players in the market while also kind-of-but-not-really letting Ben Hunt look at other options. Finally, the Pacific Championship previews round out the show as the boys give their tips for all of the games this weekend.

    Thanks for the podcast gents.
We won’t be wasting our votes, that’s for sure.
$300000 plus? Seriously? That’s 27000 cray fish meals, what a waste.
I didn’t read Dean Richies article co-authored by Sam Ayoub, I don’t read anything they write.
I’m a little over footy this time of the year, I wouldn’t be watching tonight’s game if not for Zac and Mitch playing. Bless you Sixties for saving the bird, that’s gotta be worth some points with the boss upstairs. Lucky for the bird you found him and not the guy who was caught catching and eating Ibises.

    1. Sixtiesboy

Did he take the term “bin chicken” literally! The cost is that the pink and grey galahs that had almost accepted me as part of their environment now take off the moment they see me!
I like your co-author line Joseph. So true.

      1. Joseph has

They’ll return mate when the injured bird comes back and tells all his friends what a legend you are.
They’ll start washing your car and mowing your lawn.

The Joash Papalii rumor will be confirmed next week. From what I’ve heard, we’ve already signed him. His arrival likely confirms Gutherson’s imminent departure, as Papalii can fill the utility role that Ryles had envisioned for Gutherson.

    1. Muz

Hope so mate. The kids got loads more X factor and raw ability than almost all the other young backs at our club. He is very young and has good footwork. Brown & moses won’t know themselves finally having fast backs in our roster ready to back them up and run with them when opportunity’s arise. This is a great young player I think he got SG ball player of the year for the dogs few years back mate.

  3. BDon

Moses and Lomax looked good in the Tonga game, opposition was good quality. Moses looked professional, composed and competent, Lomax similar with strong physicality. Moses had to cope with Haumole O running at him all night and he’s not always going to win in that one, but kept turning up. It would be great if these two (Moses and Lomax)could be on the park for most of the season in 2025.

    1. Muz

Massive ups for us next year if those boys can stay fit. Maybe with us finally having some fast backs, moses won’t feel the need to run the ball as much and stick his body on the line. We need other players to step up and take some of the weight off our new captain in moses in 25’. Lomax is definitely very physical and strong. He could be one of our best players we’ve had besides gutherson and Moses in the last 10 years. We now also finally will have a areal threat for Moses to kick to. This alone is something mitchel has almost never had at parra. Imagine the block with a few fast backs to run outside of him, chase his kicks, catch his kicks, it will be like handing the man a new bag of tools to work with.Joash papali’i if he signs also has loads of X factor and footwork. Him and iongi will add loads of value to mitchels attacking options that our current slow backline has never offered him.

With rumours circling Sivo is leaving.. it will be super interesting what other backs Ryles can add to our roster. Really impressive that him and MON have added more speed and backs depth to our backs in 3 months than we have seen in many years. If you watch Joash Papali’i on YouTube (if he comes), he really is a talented young player. Dogs player of the year in sg ball in 23’. NSW cup comp winner in Hawkins. Iongi who’s extremely impressive for his age in regards to work in meters and raw playing ability. I know these young men won’t be world beaters next year. But mark my words, some of these young fellahs Ryles has gotten for us could end being our best players in the next couple of years. If sivo goes you could expect he will chase another high profile back or a mid level one, and a NRL level quality #9. Rumours are lussick is also on the outter. Extremely positive signs for us eels fans. We finally are (seemingly), getting what we wanted: Speed, youth, and actual quality backs, not just signing forwards and ignoring our weakness which was speed and outside backs edge defence on try line.

  5. Ron

The sooner we get rid of sivo the better. His overall performance was awful yesterday. There’s reserve graders better than him out there and who put more effort on effort plays in

    1. Muz

Yeah He played again like a fella who’s got his future employment organised. Ba is taking him over in SL as you would have heard apparently. It’s almost unbelievable he has such a long contract. Were we trying to set a NRL record for having the oldest players on long contracts? Lol

      1. Ron

Indeed , options until 2027 for an old, lazy winger who has already had acl injury is just mind boggling stuff but hopefully BA can do us a solid and take him off us. I’ve seen the news but I’ll believe it when I see it – rugby league is full of twists and turns. We need to entice stone street or someone to come play wing for us. Surely being outside d brown and Moses + having a starting spot is a big carrot but time will tell

I’ve like how ryles has gone about cutting dead wood. Some more left to cut.

        1. Muz

For sure. Ba loves sivo so you could imagine it will likely happen but will have to wait & see what happens there. Unless Ryles has Wilson or Joash Papali’i on the verge of signing (or ideally both), then you wonder who he gets to replace him? Roosters and melb like their tallet wingers where Jason’s done his apprenticeship. Maybe Jason’s got another few backs he wants to play at he is keeping quiet. Papali’i & Wilson are probably 3 seasons away from being top NRL talent. Wonder if he will make a play at Mulitalo if Sivo leaves? For sure he would have the budget/cap space if sivo and gutho left. If we had Lomax (or Bailey S’) on one wing, Muliatlo of Wilson on the other? That’s the speediest backline we had at the eels In probably over 10 years. Surely things can’t turn out this positive for us eels fans so quickly.. it would sound too good to be true for us.

    1. Ron

We leak good juniors like they are going out of fashion. It is concerning. I guess the next question is: What’s happening with tuivati? Surely we lock him down but i down like the vibe around the situation with gun juniors at the moment

  6. John Eel

I like the signing of Papali’i. Looks a good runner and able to break a tackle. Happy to see Doorey get an extension. Could be the right type of Edge for JR.

Have no idea who the other kid is. I’ll go to YouTube I guess.

    1. Muz

Great signing Joash Papalii. He and iongi are the best young backs that we have signed probably since maybe gutherson. Not that it means they’ll be as good, but great young signings.

  7. Muz

Can everyone apologise to MON now? 😂

Remember everyone blamed him solely for not signing backs and made out BA had nothing to do with it?

Now we are signing all the best young best backs from seemingly thin air with a rookie coach who’s got a team with minimal leverage that barely missed a wooden spoon.

Can we not pretend next time a head coach has no clue or control about setting up our roster again? Poor old mon copped All the flak. It obviously wasn’t him who was preventing us from aggressively going after backs… anyway, water in the bridge.

Whatever Jason Ryles & MON are cooking is good, let’s keep the signings going. 1 NRL more quality hooker, and we are right to go almost. 💪💙💛🤞

    1. Hamsammich

It’s very easy to have a short memory Muz. Look at our backs situation in 2019. We had Hoffman, Parry, George Jennings, Marzhew in the reserve grade grand final along with Haze Dunster on the bench. This is our best potential reserve grade backline since that time. I think it’s clear BA, MON and Rogers couldn’t work together and that was detrimental to the squad.

      1. Muz

Ham I think you are right. I’m mostly having a laugh, that the irony is many only blamed one person when it’s obvious several people are involved in R & R decision making. I reckon you are spot on, they seemingly could not work together. Whatever is happening at the moment is positive, hopefully they can continue to work together positively. A divided group of people rarely achieve the best outcomes possible for a team.

    2. Milo

Muz, so MON should get it right – he’s been with us for a good time and appeared to stuff up things in Ba’s time.
There’s no doubt they didn’t see eye to eye and maybe he’s actually listening to someone. BA was no doubt stubborn abt some things but stories of him wanting players and things not happening weren’t rumours I feel.
MON needs to aim up like the players

      1. Muz

True milo it seems there was something between them. Also seems like Ryles is meeting the players himself and doing a lot of the persuading. This could be a link that had been missing, someone who’s able to go and chat to players and persuade them. Jason’s evidently doing a good job in this respect so far. Touch wood he can succeed next year. Then more top players would consider joining us you would suspect.

  8. Zero58

Short and flowery today Muz. Are you okay?
By the way MON rightly deserved every bit of criticism. To leave a team short in backs was pathetic and it cost the Eels. We just avoided the spoon is true but should there had been better signings we might have been better placed. Why they signed Harper is beyond me and didn’t chase Tracey from the Shatks – how can you explain that. He Isa quality footballer. Someone let the team down and everyone is looking at MON.
It’s okay Muz just feeling argumentative today.

    1. Muz

Haha, I was just having a laugh / poke 58, as you pointed to. I 100% agree I think it was a more a collective effort, it seems like they “couldn’t work together” so to speak maybe mate. And Tracey is a gun back, I think most of us thought that he was – Maybe Harper was just much cheaper? But he obviously offered us substantially less value + versatility. Maybe our cap was squeezed to the max was the issue, they made a huge mistake having so many players around 30 on huge line contracts. I personally don’t think ba was not a bad coach. My view is that our roster had been severely mismanaged, older player loyalty and maybe the games speed increasing both worked against us simultaneously. Good news is I think ba getting us lomax is one of the best signings in years Besides Hopgood. 🤞

        1. Muz

True jo. And Sivo should do well over in SL.. hopefully he kills it for Ba over there.. i hope this helps us sign another NRL standard back with the now with his cap space. I know Ado car is controversial, but he would improve IMMENSELY playing outside of our elite halves. I still think we are 1 more NRL experienced versatile back, and 1 experienced starting hooker away from being a truly competitive team for the whole 2025’ season.

As it stands we are still a house of cards the moment Hands, Lomax, and simmonson got injured, I think we need one experienced starting hooker, and one more experienced back. If we can do this, I think our chances of truly being competitive in 2025 increase dramatically. 💪 my bold prediction: we sign the fox and Brailey (or tannah Boyd).

  9. Joseph

Very happy with the Papalii signing, it’s been a while since the team had someone with fast feet and acceleration.
I wonder if Ryles sees him as a potential dummy half off the bench.

  10. Muz

“ Sivo has declared he could never play against Parramatta as the Fijian superstar prepares to finalise a move to the Super League after the Pacific Championships.”

This is what I love to hear. Somebody who’s extremely greaffull and proud to be a parra player. Near made me get tears in my eyes. I know sivo has had tough time’s towards the end. This man loves our club like we do. Very high respects to him. This is what our club should mean to all players, we all get paid nothing from parra.. yet it means this much to us.

This is what I would love to see more of. Best wishes to sivo on his career. Hopefully he kills it over in SL. Great to see a player show loyalty to OUR club, and share his pride.

I know it’s a small thing to some people. But to hear this from a player after a year that we’ve had. It shows you how much our club must mean to him and his family. This is what it’s all about. 💙💛
