From The Stands – July 11, 2023: Put That Game Behind Us

Just move on.

It was a tough to watch the Warriors put on a score against the Eels, and no doubt the players will learn plenty during their review, but as a fan, there’s nothing much to dwell upon. Trying to make anything more out of a match in which the Eels were missing a collection of their highest paid players is a waste of time.

With that loss behind them, and the end to Origin, the important part of the season now faces the Eels – the run to the finals. Like many Parra supporters I have stated my opinion on the completely unfair NRL draw, but after the Eels troublesome start to the season, I am just happy that the Eels are now in the position to control their own destiny.

On paper, the Eels have a very tough run into the finals. It makes this Sunday’s home game vital. Parra cannot afford to drop 4 points to the Titans in the regular season and expect to be there for finals footy at the end of the season.

Moses returns this week

One of the strengths of the Titans is their speed out wide, but that only becomes a danger if they gain momentum. Having Gutho and Moses back will be huge for the Eels but this game will be won as most are, through the middle. The forwards should have been disappointed with their efforts last week and it’s up to them to lay the platform against the Gold Coast.

Elsewhere in the NRL, the salary cap has been back in the headlines over the last couple of days, providing a minor distraction from both the premiership and Origin footy.

A particularly rich benefactor of a club was looking to exploit the rules through a player “investment” opportunity that he didn’t see as a third party deal. It seems to have been knocked on the head but we now await to see if he returns with another way of presenting it. I’ve lost any confidence and or respect for the NRL being able to apply rules a long time ago, and I fear this “investment” eventuating in some form. I hope I’m wrong.

As for our Eels, it’s back to CommBank Stadium on Sunday and the fans need to turn up in big numbers and with loud voices. I have a feeling it is going to be a bumpy and nail biting run to the finals. Let’s just celebrate that Parra are in the mix as a realistic contender and let’s do our bit to help our boys get there.

Tks Shelley. As a student of the game, I always like to see/know the reasons for the good or the bad, but some of that ‘slip up’ was so soft I’m OK to accept the move on verdict. The Titans have improved and have got speed on the flanks plus Kieran Foran seems to put on plays that work. Our spine and leadership needs to be on song.

Nice one Shelley. A curious feature of this year’s comp is almost all of the current top eight teams have had a game in which they were comprehensively beaten.

I was over Saturday’s game on the ride home. As long as everyone comes through Freddie’s Follies unscathed Parra will be well in contention come September.
