The Tip Sheet – 2023 Ep 53: Eels Roster Updates, Holbrook Gone, Dylan Brown Pleads Guilty & The Brooks-Vale Eagle

The Tip Sheet is also available on Spotify and iTunes!

The Tip Sheet is as busy as ever despite the week off for the Parramatta Eels as Sixties, Forty20 and Clint sort through a bucket load of NRL news and happenings.

First up, and on a serious note, is the most recent update to the Dylan Brown’s legal situation. The boys discuss what lies ahead for Brown following him pleading guilty to two charges on Wednesday. The NRL is yet to deliver their final punishment and regardless of how that falls, Brown has let plenty of people down with his actions.

A flurry of re-signings happened in the mean time for the Eels with Josh Hodgson, Daejarn Asi, Matt Doorey and Bailey Simonsson sorting their near futures out at the club. The contract talk segues to Bryce Cartwright following media reports of external interest in the in-form backrower as the panel looks at what it might take to pry him away from the Eels.

The NRLW has been busy as well with their roster finally locked in. With the competition around the corner the boys discuss their expectations for the new look squad and how their team identity might be shifting from what we saw in 2022.

There were some earth shaking revelations in the NRL this week with Justin Holbrook sacked by the Titans while Luke Brooks is a Silver Tail. For the Gold Coast they now turn to Des Hasler while the Sea Eagles went on a recruitment and retention spree with Brooks joining a number of other signings on the Northern Beaches. Tigertown is also in the spotlight this week with the departure of Brooks set against reports of clashes between Benji Marshall and Scott Fulton.

Reece Walsh copped a 3-game suspension for the expletive laden barrage he delivered to referee Chris Butler. Was it the right punishment? Could Butler have handled the situation differently? What can league refs learn from their union counterparts? The show looks at all of that and more.

I know he is a young kid and he will do stupid things. I just hope he learns……BUT….. he didn’t from the previous tyrst…. And don’t give me his privacy was breached garbage.

Just look at the feed today…… Disappointing.

I hope there is a clause in his mega contact that we get rid of him if he brings the club into disrepute again

A lot of people act stupidly when drunk and he is young and he had consumed a lot of booze. Hopefully it is a learning experience and the club will provide a lot of counselling. Put it in the past, imo. However, if he offends again, different story…

Some of the biggest, most revered players in the game have done things they aren’t proud of, or things that aren’t spoken about any more. It’s all up to Dylan.

The question the clubs needs to ask Dylan and then watch his actions revolves around alcohol. He has got himself into trouble a few times and both times he has been out at a club drinking heavily. Many young people have gone through this period and realise they must stop. Dylan is at that point. As much as he seems like a responsible person off the drink he makes serious errors of judgement on it. In this case a young women and to a lesser extent the club have been impacted by his actions while intoxicated,

If he continues to want to go out and drink heavily, even on the odd occasion, the club needs to let him go as it is only a matter of time before he makes another poor judgement. I know another club will pick him up but if he does not realise alcohol is a problem for him he will eventually come undone.
I hope very much for his sake and in some ways the club that he realises alcohol is not his friend.

I think Dylan needs to reflect on who he wants to be as a person, son and ultimately teammate. He does not need to overhaul everything but some education and tweaking of his behaviour/mindset could be incredibly good for him (provided it comes in part from himself and the court ordered program and not all the club/nrl/court).

As sixties and others say – The ball is in his court. He can use this a steep learning curve or naively put it down to dumb decisions on drink without analysing what lead up to this incident.

I wish Dylan the best and I will continue to believe in him as I believe most people (especially a young fella) can learn and redeem themselves in the long run.

I’m not sure how serious any alcohol issues might be. The answer is probably that they are serious enough for this court action to happen and therefore require addressing.
I could defend the Dylan that I have seen interacting in the community many times. However, that would be arguing against the facts in this case which would be both insensitive towards the victim and avoiding the fact that this young man has work to do.
I will simply say that I believe he can come out of this and, with the club’s support, be a better person.

As of the same round last year Parra were sitting 7th, this year we’re 6th, we’re a better team this year. It’s our year.
