The Tip Sheet is also available on Spotify and iTunes!
The Queenslanders have sealed the 2023 State Of Origin series with a dominant 32-6 victory over the Blues. The Tip Sheet reviews the blowout win and tear into some bizarre decisions from the NSW hierarchy.
It is the preview podcast though and there is plenty to talk about as the Eels take on the Dolphins in the NRL while the NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg go head-to-head with the Sharks/Jets. The Flegg is boosted by the returns of Ethan Sanders and Matt Arthur while Cup gets Arthur Miller-Stephen, Matt Doorey and Luca Moretti back into the fold. The boys look at whether either team can snap losing streaks this week as they come up against very strong opposition.
The NRL squad is hunting for a 5th straight win ahead of their upcoming bye. They will have to beat the Dolphins on the Sunshine Coast in order to do it but will have Mitchell Moses and Junior Paulo on deck. The Dolphins have been borderline revelations in their inception year with Wayne Bennett instilling plenty of grit and toughness into their roster. Parra will need to replicate their strong recent form if they are to make it five straight.
The show is interrupted in its closing moments by the breaking news that Justin Holbrook has sensationally been sacked by the Gold Coast Titans with Des Hasler appointed as his replacement.
Lui copped death threats on social media, maybe not an excuse to post what he did but would of been worth mentioning as it was mentioned in the mainstream media and maybe a reason why he was not happy
That came out later Anon. However, I maintain that he needs better guidance because his social media post was without context and therefore appeared to be directed towards supporters as a whole. His form of making poorly considered comments is further indication of that.
Tks men. Qld do it better,a simple truth for now. Turbo’s injury was disruptive, but the penalty he ceded in the second minute was not healthy…’start strong and well’ sort of got trashed.
I must say I have grown in confidence with where the Eels are at. I don’t think it’s Maroon level but our defence seems to be better. Tries against us are varied and random rather than repeat bloopers from glaring weaknesses(if that makes sense) and as you say, there are less of them.If that can continue to improve, happy days!
BDon, it makes perfect sense. Back when Fergo was on the wing outside Waqa we had a pattern of tries being scored against us. The system is now a slide based defence.
The defence on that side has improved drastically with Penisini getting more experience in first grade. I know you’ve said you see Hopgood as a potential future captain, Will would have to be in that conversation too. Whoever happens to be the future captain it is great that there can be multiple options which is a far cry from 10 years ago where we’d be struggling to come up with 1 option.
💯 Ham. And that’s without loading any pressure on a couple of younger players in pathways who have captaincy potential.
I feel that while 8-13 the two teams are relatively even I believe that the Eels are stronger in the backs. Most certainly our depth is far better which is demonstrated by the superior bench.
The Phins will be well supported in their first game at Sunshine Coast Stadium. However the Eels are in rare form at the moment.
MOM Mitch Moses showing how a well drilled team can operate with a quality half. First try scorer Will Penisini.
Eels by 20.
Loving the confidence John. And Will is in fine form.
Origin is a farce. Ponga not selected for QLD, but between Turbo and Teddy they have all his characteristics and we select both of them. Freddy is a boob.
Not surprising, I’m not sure what to expect this week. I’d love to see us knuckle down, be professional and just put the Phins to the sword. It’d be great to build this momentum and have teams fear us – I can’t remember the last time I could say that! Go Parra!
Without NSW losing, origin would be dead buried cremated. It’s by design the teams we pick….. Design to lose.
I reckon you’re right 10 year. The whole thing is set up to give qlders something to cheer about between each of the Broncos premierships.
Between Broncos premierships! 🤣 Hate to think what the plan was for between Eels premierships…
Origin was created for QLD. Tradition maintained
NSW selections have failed to be a reward for form for far too long. The fact that Reg couldn’t get a look in last year was a farce of the highest order. The trouble is, the media has failed to hold selections to account. Criticism of selections isn’t necessarily or shouldn’t be criticism of the players themselves. That’s what some media need to accept too.
100% on all this 60s.
I had a good chuckle at “between Eels premierships” …..
🤣🤣🤣
The trouble with Origin is that Queensland still take Origin way to seriously exposing the massive chip they still have on the shoulder. It is a modern state with a modern economy and now four NRL sides. Yet the Queensland players buy into the myth that somehow Queensland is still hard done by.
Freddie, as usual, out thunk himself in trying to be clever. Cook aside, Bringing Mitch into the team yet still wanting to play Pantherball was never going to work. It did look like players were hanging back and not going with him as per what works when he plays for Parra. And I do feel empathy for Turbo. So much talent but such a fragile body.
As for Parra, if they treat the Phins with respect, they will have too much class to win. It is interesting this is the third team in a row Parra has paled with some real speedsters in the backing. Get this done and it has been a real good period for Parra. The top eight could end up changing quite a bit over the next part of the season.
Junior to go over first and Sivo to get back on track and score a double. Go Parra!
How stark was the lack of support for Moses! Forty was so enraged by it that he was ready to declare it deliberate.
Taking another win into the bye sets up a terrific run into finals footy.
It was strange. Why pick Moses and then not play to his strengths? And, yes it has been a few good weeks of footy culminating in todays win and a well deserved rest before a big eight weeks.
