The Tip Sheet – 2022 Ep 50: Instant Reaction, Eels Knock Warriors, Secure Consecutive Wins

The Tip Sheet is also available on Spotify and iTunes!

You know a good win at home means the boys are live from Jacks Bar & Grill and they welcomed back Neville Glover this week to talk Eels vs Warriors and State Of Origin. Neville breaks down his experiences with representative football before showing off some smooth dance moves for the house!

The boys look at a largely solid performance from the Eels against the Warriors as the Blue & Gold secured their first back-to-back wins since Rounds 10 and 11. A pair of defensive blemishes late in the game took some of the lustre off the win but the forwards dominated the ruck while the spine chimed in at opportune times with both Mitchell Moses and Reed Mahoney making key contributions.

A solid win tonight / last night. A shame we let them score late tries and this is something we have done before. We played well for 70 mins.
We need to be ruthless and defence is the key.
I am not being a badger here but why do we think Mahoney was taken off? It seemed to be a better game for him.

    1. sixties

Hi Milo. It was solid. A couple of defensive decisions let us down. As for Reed coming off, we were 22 points up and it gives the opportunity to see how we can cover for him getting injured.

      1. Milo

Yes mate , i thought it was one of Mahoneys better games and was surprised he went off.
Both late tries we soft when you look at them; i am not sure of the communication between the inside players but Simmonsen rushed in like he had blinkers on, and he finished up pretty much in one with his centre partner. It’s something i am sure they work on, but we see if it too often.

That was one of the most ordinary, awful games I’ve ever been too. Just don’t know what to make of them at this stage of the season. Grateful for the 2 points but there’s a hell of lot of improvement needed very soon.

    1. Chippy

Best patience weve shown all season , really dont know what you people want out of our team but neither do you ,, whinge either way !!!!!! Best warriors have played all season too , Sigh , i give up .

      1. Trapped in the 1970’s

That was the best patience they’ve shown all year? I best watch the replay.

          1. sixties

In the live appearance we commented on the improved composure – of both teams. I wanted Parra to be patient against the Warriors. The last ten minutes unfortunately took some gloss of a very solid victory.

  3. Spark

    The Warriors scored three tries.
The Murchie try was well constructed and just beat our defence.
Their other two tries were DIRECT results of both Simonsson and Sivo jamming in and leaving their wingman with a clear passage.
Notwithstanding Blake’s second try where a half decent looping pass would have given them a very easy stroll over the line.
It’s sounding like a broken record but why doesn’t the coaching staff or the captains tell them to just stay on their man ???
I’m not trying to sound divisive as we all appreciate the win but for once I and thousands of fans would like someone at the club to address it.
It just gives the opposition an easy couple
of tries EVERY game. Damn we would be a hell of a team if we could fix up this one simple part of our game !

    1. sixties

Spark, those of us that grew up watching older defence systems of wingers keeping width do feel an element of frustration. But this isn’t just something that happens with Parra. Most teams operate a similar system. It’s why nearly every team concedes tries out wide when they either get done for numbers or the wingers jam in. Those that have better records simply have players making better decisions or executing better from the inside players – which reduces the pressure on the outside blokes.
PS Spark, please enjoy the win.

      1. Spark

Always enjoy the win but lament the fact that we have a red hot chance this year if we fix some basic errors!

      2. Parraletic

Sixties, relatively new here and enjoy reading your takes and especially your positivity regarding our performances. But I must disagree that all teams employ similar systems regarding jamming and we just don’t time it well enough. We concede carbon copies of the same try every week, whether it’s Alex Johnston, David Nofoaluma, Sione Katoa or Marcelo Montoya last night. Penrith just don’t concede those tries. I mean they’ve concede 200 points less than us this season

See where Sivo was standing for the intercept last night? Or the try he conceded down his edge he jammed for absolutely no reason. So frustrating. Yet I can’t blame the player because whether its Sivo, Bailey, Fergo or whoever they all do the same thing – it must be a coaching issue.

        1. sixties

Parraletic – thanks for your reply but I said most teams, not all. You’ve selected Penrith, who make great defensive decisions, as an example of a team with great defence.

          1. Parraletic

Should we not aspire to be like penrith? If they are not jamming in and not conceding the tries we concede, why do we continue to implement the systems we do?

          2. Prometheus

Mate we’ve had these defensive issues and attitude for years. It appears beyond the coaching staff to improve it. Until we do we won’t win sweet F.A.

          3. sixties

I’d say there are aspects about Penrith that all teams should aspire to be like. So why can’t everyone be like Penrith? I mean they’ve shown that there is a gulf between them and literally every other team so plenty of teams are doing something wrong. You could be a supporter of any team and literally pick any aspect of the game and use Penrith as an example of a team to aspire towards,
            Hang on.
How about this – why are we the only team who genuinely challenges them?

      3. Joe Vass

So what are you saying, our players can’t make sound decisions or can’t execute better than those teams with better records. That fills us all with confidence for the big end of season games. This aspect of our game which has been an obvious weakness for a number of seasons needs to be fixed. Last night we got lucky when Sivo intercepted otherwise we would have conceded another try from a poor defensive decision.

      1. Mannah Brow

We have one of the worst defensive records in the comp conceding more than double the points than the Panthers have and more than a hundred than any other team in the top four. We need change.

        1. Milo

Mannah, you make a good point about our defence; to me it has not improved on last season and even Canberra and Easts have a better defence record; C’bury have a worse defence by only 20 points.

  4. BDon

Tks guys.Patches of good play, but I’m pretty sure this happened at key times in both halves – discipline, good sets, build up, field position,Warriors fading, error. Some will say errors happen, they do, but we seem to let teams out of jail too often. And Reece Walsh’s early leap into Gutho, where he actually gave himself up by stop competing and looking downwards when he realised he was far too early? How does the ref, touchies and bunker miss that?

  5. Mannah Brow

I think the first try scored by the warriors highlighted the deficiencies in our defensive pattern of have no the wingers constantly jam in. We actually had four defenders lined up against three and gifted them an extra man and a try. Embarrassing stuff.

    1. sixties

i haven’t watched the replay yet but I agree with you on first look. The jam seemed to open it up but I want to look again at the work of the inside men.

    2. BDon

Yeah, I don’t think Penisini noticed Simmonsen jamming till too late, he was still shadowing the centre, then suddenly the winger was unmarked, we definitely had the numbers in a small, controllable area.

      1. Spark

That’s exactly what happened. It’s a low percentage play. You saw Penisini face after tackling the winger and he wasn’t happy. Notwithstanding that, I rate Simonsson and think he immediately understood that he stuffed up.

        1. Rocket

Maika did the same jammed in when Waqa had the the player covered. Slipped the ball to the winger left unmarked.

          I don’t think we learn.

          1. Johnno

Totally agree, ok mistakes happen but these continue to occur, its either trained for ,or the players arnt listening. if its the latter drop them till they learn and listen

  6. Shaun

Missed the game but watched the replay and it was a comfortable win despite the two late tries. The Warriors were up for the game but still Parra was unlucky not to be 16-6 at the break (we all know why) and in the second half (until the final 5 minutes) they controlled the game well. Definitely room for improvement but still a solid win again a team that wasn’t going to go away.

  7. Glenn

A couple of refereeing calls against Parramatta had the score alot closer at HT than what it realistically should’ve been.
Always sensed Parramatta were in control of the game, just need to learn to close out games.

Neville simply enjoys the ambassador role and isn’t shy. Before we spoke on mic, I told him that Guru had shared the paging story with me and Neville said “that might just be true”. I asked whether it was ok to share it with the audience and he said “sure”. I didn’t think he’d demonstrate the dance moves as his hip was giving him problems. But he can still cut it. It beats my patented “old man dance” hands down. 😁
