The Tip Sheet – 2022 Ep 44: Origin Eligibility, Fullbacks On The Fly & More Trouble In Tigertown

The Tip Sheet is also available on Spotify and iTunes!

With Spiro sidelined this week Sixties and Forty20 tee off on a wide range of topical NRL matters. The episode kicks off with a spirited discussion about international and Origin eligibility following Brian To’o’s declaration for Samoa ahead of the Rugby League World Cup.

There is plenty happening elsewhere in the NRL this week as a flurry of fullbacks change clubs while the Cronulla Sharks and potentially the NSW Blues handle a COVID infection surrounding Nicho Hynes. There is good news for the Sharks though with Briton Nikora re-signing as they continue to build a solid core playing group.

Drama at the Wests Tigers? Well I never. The boys discuss Luke Brooks coming out swinging at the constant leaks…before a fresh new leak comes out about Adam Doueihi and Brett Kimmorely.

There is good news for the NRL believe it or not as Sixties and Forty20 celebrate a wonderful return to New Zealand for the code. An ambitious plan to repay the Warriors is outlined by Forty20 and the feasibility of it is questioned.

Lastly we take a quick look at the team sheet for the Parramatta Eels. Without entering full on preview territory the lads look at the changes this week and how the team need to adjust ahead of their trip to Leichardt.

I really liked this podcast; some great observations and also some left field ones for the warriors.
I am a fan of sixties comments about the eligibility – so let’s see what our nrl do? Nothing will be done about To’o and his wanting to play for Samoa. The nrl are weak as – we know this.
I like Forty’s idea about taking some additional games to NZ as payback for their Covid times here in Aust. Some logistics but it would be a goodwill gesture and also create more NZ interest where many players come from for their Nrl debut.

Cheers Milo. And those comments aren’t meant to single out To’o. And people aren’t seeing the wood for the trees. The initial qualification for Origin is electing to play for Australia. It has nothing to do with tier one nation dual eligibility. The second part about Tier 1 means that tier one players can’t swap and change their allegiances each year. But tier two players can. So if To’o rules himself out of 2022 Origin, as he should now be, he can rule himself back in by electing to play for Australia.

State of Origin is an anachronism anyway. The idea that state based parochialism should the centrepiece of the game is an idea whose time has come and gone. And considering that some yokels north of the border still harbour some Ill defined resentment after four decades will make a NSW win in game three all the more sweeter.

As for the Tigers, the leaks regardless from where they are coming from are appalling. It reminds me of a certain club a decade ago. The Tigers will be stuffed on the field until the internal divisions are resolved. Who would want to coach there? And a pox on the houses of those who think spreading gossip and aiding agendas is journalism.

I have no problem with letting them play. But let’s change the rules, don’t ignore them. Because as we know, those that enforce the rules can be surprisingly selective once they decide to use rules as a guide rather than a rule.

I’m with Sixties on the To’o situation, I want him to play for both Samoa and NSW but as he has stated that he won’t play for Australia he shouldn’t be playing for NSW. A possible way to combat this happening again is that on the 1st of November players are given the choice for the next 12 months on where their allegiance lies. On the reason why it hasn’t been brought up in mainstream media I believe is because of the NRL club he plays for, we know the rat bags are media darlings and can do no wrong.
