The Tip Sheet – 2022 Ep 19: Taking On The MRC With Spiro, Breaking Down Easter Monday

The Tip Sheet is also available on Spotify and iTunes!

It is a monster weekend of footy with 5 days of NRL but the important stuff happens on Friday and Monday for the Parramatta Eels. Spiro is back to discuss all of the the big talking points for the Blue & Gold and he has a bone to pick with the wild inconsistency of suspensions handed out in the code.

There is big injury news this week – both good and bad. While the team loses Waqa Blake to a serious MCL injury, Sean Russell is finally given a return date to full duties and it is surprisingly close. The club is celebrating 75 years of the Eels and Sixties briefly takes a walk down memory lane ahead of a dedicated podcast to the anniversary.

As always the last portion of the podcast is dedicated to previews. It starts with the Harold Matthews who are playing finals footy against the Cronulla Sharks as we run right through to the NRL who take on the Wests Tigers on Easter Monday.

Great listen. And the comments on Gutho’s value to the Eels v other clubs were spot on. I wouldn’t trade him for any other fullback.

Thanks Shaun. His is an interesting case at every contract renewal because his value for us is higher than market value. Yet I think we have to be very conscious of drawing a line. The perils of juggling the cap.

What the Panthers have done in signing the Cleary duo long term is no surprise but a very clever move.

There was commentary this week that hinted that Coach Cleary tended to be over compensated while halfback Nathan took unders. I am just echoing what I have heard.

I would like to see the Eels do a similar thing with some of there elite players. They have virtually done that with Gutho now.

There is no doubt in my mind that Marata will spend time in the forwards during the West Tigers game.

Like you the biggest surprise for me is Penisini on the wing. He is just such a good young centre it was a shock selection for me.

I expect and look forward to seeing Perham in action during this game. I guess naming him on the bench takes away speculation from the talking heads.

I would be surprised if we didn’t lock up certain players, or rather extend them, before their current deal reaches the negotiation period.
Yeah, I just can’t see Will playing wing but I could be wrong.

The reason I think we will see Penisini on the wing is that neither Gutherson nor Simonsson are especially strong bringing the ball back from a kick. There’s also the fact that Penisini was the one who moved to the wing when Blake went off early against the Dragons.

I don’t know how much truth is in the rumour but I would be happy to see Herbie Farnworth at the Eels

One thing I know is that the Eels will not pay overs
