The Tip Sheet – 2022 Ep 18: Instant Reaction, Eels Survive Torrid Second Half To Sweep Titans

The Tip Sheet is also available on Spotify and iTunes!

The machine that is the Parramatta Eels keeps on rolling – even in the face of serious adversity – as the Blue & Gold posted their 4th victory of the season tonight. Parramatta’s 26-20 victory will go down as a game of two halves but the pluck and resilience of the Eels to absorb a tidal wave of Titan’s possession in the second stanza was critical.

Sixties is plenty fired up though and kicks off the show on a massive tear as he takes inconsistent officiating and the use of cynical penalties to task. The boys discuss the 9-1 penalty count favouring the home team as well as various incidents from the game that stood out, headlined by the sin-binning of Junior Paulo.

There is plenty of great footy to discuss and the duo lavish praise on the forward pack this week for a lion-hearted group effort. The instant reaction closes out with the boys dishing out their 3, 2, 1 votes and a call to arms for Easter Monday!

  1. Wile

I thought Mahoney knocked the ball backwards – in the Captains challenge – anyone else see that?

    1. sixties

Wile, I saw a challenge that was allowed to proceed on the previous play. They can only challenge the incident that stopped the play.

      1. Wile

agree- they stuffed up. But also the Bunker said Mahoney knocked the ball towards the opposition dead ball line so it is a knock on – but he was facing backwards not forwards and knocked the ball back. So the Bunker got the rules wrong and then the direction wrong

It was a massive call as we should have had the penalty and they should have got a sin bin. Score line would have been very different

And they should never of had a captains challenge left because Mahoney did not strip the ball on the previous captains challenge – so if they got that right none of this would have happened

    2. BDon

Yep, it only appeared to go forward because it glanced his leg. Not even noted by bunker. Also I thought intentional fouls are professional fouls, full stop. Junior has just done a Kane Evans, smashed a back coming through the ruck, and Brimson at no stage indicated head contact or injury.

  2. Michael Briffa

I thought that I’d seen the worst referee to ever put a whistle to his lips in Ashleigh Kline but the guy who laughingly refereed our game must be at least Klein’s equal. I wonder how Annesley is going to defend the decisions, 2 Captains challenges which should have led to sin binning the Captain, plus a number of others that went the Titans way. Why wasn’t the Titans player sin binned or at least penalised for attacking Penisini’s head in Parra’s in goal area. No bunker review. Junior’s sin binning, if it wasn’t so serious, was laughable. I was left exhausted & angry after the game. Our team withstood so much that went against us tonight. They were magnificent. GO YOU MIGHTY EELS

  3. Shaun

Nice summation of the game gents. I’m not going to mention the refs. But this was a good and important win. The side has grown mentally and it showed tonight. And maybe instead of retiring winger as a position it needs to be renamed. Maybe outside outside centre? Widest receiver? Macbeth?

  4. Paul

Oye Forty you forgot to introduce yourself as Forty-Twenty aka John aka Barry White…
Thanks to you and Sixties for a well rounded post-match reflection.

    1. sixties

There you go! Or the love god?
The risk of the immediate reaction pod is a possible overreaction, but in this instance I feel similarly aggrieved this morning. Thanks for your feedback Paul

  5. Milo

Love it boys, and thanks Sixties. It’s funny how Holbrook cans the refs after round one and in our return game we cop a hiding. The officiating has been a debacle for years now.

    1. sixties

Interesting isn’t it. The thing is, I’m not too annoyed with the on-field, it’s the off field officiating which has me riled. Where the official has the benefit of considering the decision.

  6. John Eel

When Holbrook criticised the referees and bunker after the Titans Rd 1loss he set out to achieve two things.

Firstly he was attempting to get a better deal for his team with the game officials. When the NRL let his criticism go through to the keeper without sanction it was a signal to the referees

Secondly it was a deflection strategy to save Campbell from being cited after he attacked Sean Russell with his knees and smashed his ribs and punctured his lung.

On both counts his strategy was a resounding success. Campbell did not get charged by the MRC. Therefore if it was not for karma he would have got off Scott free.

Well with regard to putting doubt in the officials minds. Last night on two occasions professional fouls profited the transgressor’s. Junior Paulo sent to the sin bin and put on report for a head shot when no contact with the head was made by Junior.Thirdly the Titans won the penalty count nine one..

Well done Justin as a coach you achieved your goals. NRL as far as officiating integrity goes you sank further into the swamp.

Anessley what are you going to do to fix this mess?

    1. Wile

Agree 100%. However, Refs are human and getting a fair deal from them is part of the game. BA needs to step up. He can do it his way but needs to do something. We should have won that easily. The more tight matches the more injuries and suspensions and more tight matches and the worse we look and the worse deal we get in the 50:50 calls

      1. sixties

How do you want BA to step up? Do you want him to have a crack in pressers? That’s never been his go and to be honest, I prefer it that way

        1. Wile

So you are happy with the deal we got from the bunker tonight – because that is the result of the way BA does things. You cant expect to remain silent and also expect people to treat you fairly.

          1. sixties

What I’m happy with is that his attitude towards press conferences never deflects attention from player performances. It’s taken a long time but the players now own their performances and have the mental fortitude to handle a match like this Titans clash. And I can assure you that the powers that be receive a full report via the appropriate channels.

        2. John Eel

I like the way that BA does business. However Wile has a point, Holbrook got full tote odds for his rant after the Rd 1 loss.

The NRL are missing in action over these referee and bunker issues. It is like Anessley is talking to the media but not game officials.

I am certain that the Eels are making a noise behind closed doors but time is over due for the Eels to be shown some respect by the NRL.

It will be interesting to watch the Cowboys and see how they are treated after their rant.

          1. sixties

Don’t get me wrong, I can see why supporters feel as you and Wile do John. I’ve often felt that way too. But BA has been consistent over the years for a reason and I accept that it has a purpose and results have been achieved.

  7. John Eel

After the game I thought Cooper Cronk put it very well. He said it was credit to BA and the team because so much went wrong but they played through it.

In the past they would have lost that game.

  8. Spark

The on field referee always has an excuse as he calls it in real time and on the run. The official in the bunker has NO excuse to get it wrong.
The NRL will nervously laugh and say yeah sorry but that’s just not good enough. Too many times, players are incorrectly sent to the sin bin and it WILL cost teams !!
The Opacic head high no call, The Paulo incident …. I could go on and on !
The official/s in the bunker should be sacked !
It was an embarrassing old fashioned carve up !

    1. Prometheus

It’s the top levels of officialdom that get it wrong. These inept people they employ are not held accountable. Funny how they can’t see it yet we can.

    2. sixties

That’s right mate. As I said, I’m not fired up about the on field calls in this one. The bunker stuffed up badly with reporting on incidents and continues to do so. Between them and the MRC there are no excuses

      1. Spark

Look at the end of the day as a fan of the game – I’m just lost.
If the officials do not understand the rules – where does that leave us, the fan ?

  9. Lynbeth

Wow, so proud that our boys stayed strong last night, it must have been tough out there, I know it was watching from home. The refereeing was one thing, but the bunker, they are the ones to make sure mistakes aren’t made, well how did that go, they were pathetic.
I was so proud of our boys, and I really hope that Junior gets a fair go from the MRC, but I am nervous.

    1. sixties

I never take any decision for granted.
Campbell puts a bloke into hospital with his knees – no case to answer,
NAS – late direct shot to Maka’s head – no case to answer
Paulo tackles a bloke hard and the bloke injures his shoulder. He says his shoulder is hurt. There’s no HIA ordered as the doctor calls it a shoulder injury with no contact to the head, yet Paulo goes to the bin for forceful contact to the head? I won’t be making any bets on the MRC decision.

      1. Greg Okladnikov

Those 3 are great examples of the inconsistency and lack of understanding from the MRC .

Russell – into hospital – no penalty onfield, by the bunker or MRC

Maka – late hit to the head after the tackle was basically completed – no onfield/ no bunker / $1000 joke fine

Paulo – no contact to the head as even stated by Brimson as Paulo was walking off and the match doctor – and put on report and sin bin. I think everyone would agree 100% that if Paulo’s shoulder hit Brimson in the head he would have been seriously concussed

I would love to get the MRC / bunker on a panel show to explain these 3 decisions because players and fans are confused

And does anyone know who is on the MRC

        1. Anonymous

Greg as far as I’m aware it’s a rotating two person panel selected from a larger pool. The constant is MRC manager Luke Patten.
Lets also throw in Blake Lawrie not even charged for the chicken wing on Simonsson.

      2. Lynbeth

Our boys matter to us, it doesn’t feel like there is ever fairness in protecting our boys. especially with the MRC, I understand how you feel, because I never feel confident with their decisions either.
Was it just me, but , did Justin Holbrook seem very sheepish in his press conference, and so he should.
