The Tip Sheet – 2021 Ep. 50: Who Will Reign As Kings Of The West? feat. Bernie Gurr & Daniel Essey

The Tip Sheet is also available on Spotify and iTunes!

The Parramatta Eels versus the Penrith Panthers – a finals derby 21-years in the making. All the marbles are on the line in week two of the finals as these two Western Sydney rivals play for a berth against the Melbourne Storm in the grand final qualifier.

Bernie Gurr once again joins the show to share the Eels journey through the finals series with Sixties and Forty20. Gurr breaks down the fallout from week one of the finals before eyeing up how the Eels and Panthers match-up. The boys work in his wake to discuss some preemptive work by the media to establish narratives this week before making their bold predictions for the Saturday night showdown.

This week’s preview show closes out with an enjoyable chat with Daniel Essey – the president of the Baulkham Hill Brumbies. Spearheaded by Sixties, the Parra Stories have been a terrific insight into the makeup of the Parramatta junior district. Daniel is no exception here and the work that he and the outstanding team at the Brumbies has done makes for quality discussion.

Thanks Shaun and so do we. And it’s not just tipping with the heart and not the head. If Parra plays as they are capable of playing, they can upset the Panthers system, just as Souths did.

Enjoyed the chat with Daniel Essey and the update on the Sunday primary schools (formerly convents) comp. it has a history going back nearly 60 years. Prominent NRL players like Paul Gallen, Justin Morgan, Chad Robinson, David Williams and Mitchell Moses played in the comp in their formative years.

Thanks Phil. We’re enjoying learning more about these Parra junior clubs and the terrific work they do in the community. Our pleasure to bring the stories to you.

Thanks once again for the Tip Sheet. Great listening again.

About the only thing I disagreed with Bernie about is that I felt some players who had the week off had lost a little sharpness. However given the gravity of the game tomorrow they will be cherry ripe.

The Eels team that played against them 2 weeks ago showed the way. Ray Stone was outstanding that night and just as good against the Knights.

We shook them up 2 weeks ago in the first half and with our full team on board with the same game plan meaning Stoney will have some backup and that is how we can get a win.

Cameron Smith on SEN yesterday said that the problem with Panthers is that they only have an A game. When that does not work like it didn’t against the Bunnies they don’t have a B game.

Now he wasn’t suggesting that the Eels would win Saturday. He was suggesting how the Storm will beat Panthers the following week.

Hooper and Crawley sound to me that they would be more at home on housewives of Foxsport than delivering professional analysis of football.

Looking forward to another great game from the bash brothers RCG and Stoney. Mitch to continue his stellar form and Dylan to revert back to his form from the Melbourne game.

    Eels in an upset

John, I agree about how we can beat the Panthers. That physicality is the starting point.
The narrative from Crawley and Hooper is becoming a tiresome bore. Unfortunately they will find an audience.

With past boards the journos were smarter than them , NO more , current boards way to professional for them , hardly any leaks and not influenced by journos with hidden agendas (some not so well hidden ) and most certainly way to smart to engage in policys and administration with them , 4 times semi finals last 5 seasons , sack BA , whose club are they trying to set him up for , dogs sacked des 3/4 semis , spent 4 seasons so far at bottom , success shouldnt be gauged on premierships its simply a coach good enough to keep the window open for the players to climb through it , gibbo didnt even go in dressing shed in a grand final , he knew who had to get it done , NOT him , but look what he had , lets wait till we start failing to make finals before we throw the coaches overboard , anyway like i said , the board , the ceo and mark oniell to smart to be influenced by the journos and doomsayers , were a respected club again !!!!

        Well said old timer.
The club admin realise that the on field performances have been instrumental in resurrecting the off field successes like corporate partnerships, merchandise, memberships, finances. With the club becoming regular finalists they understand that the platform for a title is being established, and just as importantly, they understand that making unnecessary changes when the club is on the rise can be the fast track to going off the tracks.
As Brent Read wisely said in reply to implosion/coach sacking suggestions made by other journos – “it’s no longer in the club’s DNA”.

That’s the key to being a total pro like Bernie. Preparation. Know your stuff. Present valid arguments that you can support with evidence.
