The Tip Sheet – 2021 Ep. 48: Instant Reaction – Moses Stands & Delivers

The Tip Sheet is also available on Spotify and iTunes!

Parramatta’s errors and miscues kept the Newcastle Knights in the contest for longer than we all thought but in the end the Blue & Gold prevailed 28-20 to book a date with the Penrith Panthers in Week 2 of the finals.

Sixties and Forty20, fresh off the win, convene to discuss the pulsating contest in which the Newcastle Knights produced one of their best efforts of 2021 to challenge to the Eels. Thankfully though, a Mitchell Moses masterclass carried the day with the star halfback having a hand in everything be it by run, pass or kick. The boys look at some of the key touches from Parramatta’s halfback and why the intent he signalled early meant everything towards the end result.

Isaiah Papali’i and Ray Stone were central to the win with both men adapting to new roles and responsibilities this week while Reagan Campbell-Gillard made several thunderous statements in defence in his return from injury. Their efforts and exploits and discussed by Sixties and Forty20 before the puzzling logic of the bunker is brought into the spotlight.

All this and more on a super charged finals installment of The Tip Sheet!

    Great listening as always.

I am glad my family was not alone in being really annoyed with what appeared to be the Knights questionable use of HIA, the head knocks always came when they needed a rest in the hot conditions. The entire Frizell situation, how he stayed on after stumbling, then left the field only to be ‘passed’ fit on his HIA test is not a good look for the NRL.

The only thing that matters in a finals game is winning. The depth in our pack is important- to win we must play with aggression and that means we risk suspension. Marata’s late tackle was stupid. Juniors was an accident and sometimes they happen.

Mr Atkins and to a lesser extent Klein are at least consistent when they adjudicate our games.

I’ll be surprised if the Knights aren’t asked questions about the Frizell decisions. Utterly ludicrous for player safety for him to stay out there initially (and it cost them a try), and mind-boggling that he was allowed back. I thought if players showed clear signs of concussion, which he very definitely did, they weren’t allowed back regardless of passing a test.

I don’t understand why play needed to be stopped for an attacking player to be brought off for an HIA – it should be play on, with it happening in the background like any other interchange. As for doing an on-field assessment after the trainer has asked for play to be stopped – what the hell? They automatically have to go off at that point, so get them off and get on with it. The drop-out delay was a farce, and poorly managed.

Wilhelmina, we didn’t talk about the drop out delay, but you’re right, it was a farce. Then, did they start the timer again because the Knights were ignoring Klein’s instruction to take the kick and took an eternity after the player had been removed.

Frizell was Unconscious before he hit the ground.

The point in the second half where the game was held up for Frizell’s second injury, Klein lost control of the game.

Tks guys. I thought it ironical that we defended pretty damn well all over the park but still got done 3 times by the same shift out wide.
Great game from Moses, and it was encouraging to have so many others putting in. That 2 tackle piece where Junior unfortunately went on report was Rugby League at its brutal best.

You may say that I am biased but I thought Mitch was MOM for his third game in a row. Further his try was try of the match just ahead of Will Penisini’s flick to Fergo.

The timing of the run with halftime approaching, the opportunity with the referee telling the Knights forward to stay out of the tackle and the blistering acceleration to get around Ponga

Keep playing the hot hand Mitch

Win or lose I love listening to these instant reaction podcast! It’s been a great addition to what you guys offer.

As for Parra, we were in total control of that game before we did an unnecessary charge down and gave them six again. But overall it was a very good performance and we just need to be a little better three more times!

    1. sixties

Cheers Michael. I must say that the instant reactions after a win are far more enjoyable to record than the alternative. I think we will lift again. Can the Riff or will they feel the pressure?

  5. John Eel

If Michael Chammas’s tweet is correct, that is massive news for the Eels.

I honestly thought that Marata in particular was in trouble.I thought Junior was less likely to be suspended.

    That is good news

    1. BDon

That’s huge (if correct), just looking now to see Villiaume Kickau get away from the little blokes and have a few runs through the middle.

      1. John Eel

Just an inkling from watching the Panthers Bunnies game, I thought that both Cleary and Fisher Harris played injured last game.

        1. BDon

Ditto, and Cleary had another crash landing on his shoulder. Fisher Harris looked at about 70% tops of his normal energy and involvement.

Great podcast guys. A lot to discuss…
I don’t think I have any fingernails left for next week after that game.
Moses took the game by the scruff of the neck and delivered. That try was epic just like his first at Bank West.
We kept inviting Knights onto the scoreboard on too many occasions. We must do better than that.
    Ray STONE!! Enough said!!
The middle was strong. Great to see our big boppers together again… (hopefully again this week).
Marata and WP were great on the right side. Fergo? Not so much.. He scored 2 but his opposite number scored 3…I think one commentator said he appeared “stuck in the mud” Sauaso Sue is a grub for twisting his leg. NRL should crack down on third man in tacklers.
Left edge was great Waqa and Haze. Lane well he just needs to improve.
Gutho was good but at the same time can be better.
Just worried about the double standard application of Roosters Verrals media defending the head high…but Eels players cop the brunt from the media.
Ivan Cleary has already tried to manipulate the entire finals series, the NRL and match officials by his rant after losing to the Rabbits. He’s just put the entire, NRL, refereeing and media on notice basically requesting special treatment for his team going forward. If he’s not the biggest manipulating coach in the NRL who is!!
    Next week it’s personal!!
    Go Eels!!

    1. sixties

Thanks Pete and really good observations. Ray Stone is the sort of player that team mates would love to play alongside. You know that he gives everything he’s got in every match. And that improvement in his service is phenomenal.
just like you said, it is personal with Penrith. I’ve had a couple of unpleasant trips to Penrith in recent years due to spectator behaviour. So if we can get over the Riff, I’ll be wearing an even bigger smile.-
