The Tip Sheet – 2021 Ep. 47: Eels Go Full Tilt For Finals Joust With Knights

The Tip Sheet is also available on Spotify and iTunes!

Bernie Gurr spearheads the first edition of The Tip Sheet for the 2021 NRL Finals as Sixties and Forty20 dive into what lies ahead for the Blue & Gold with one of the podcast’s most eternally insightful guests.

Newcastle awaits on the horizon but first the trio explore how the Eels are arriving into the postseason with their recent results against the Melbourne Storm and Penrith Panthers. From there it is all about Sunday and sudden death footy as Gurr breaks down where Parramatta need to excel against the Novocastrians and the pitfalls they have to avoid.

In the closing segments of this week’s episode, Sixties and Forty20 take a quick look at the match-ups they like on Sunday and how the bench can make a big-time impact on the contest.

Great podcast, every time I hear him talk about Parra I wish he was still our CEO and that’s no disrespect to our current CEO.

      Thanks Michael.
Bernie has maintained that passion for the Eels despite parting ways. We also enjoy being able to share his knowledge of the game.

    Great work Forty20 and Sixties.
Great to hear from Bernie Gurr he has done so much for Parra so it’s great to get his knowledge and opinions.
    Thanks again.

Thanks Pete. Bernie was critical in the turning the Eels around. He was always approachable for supporters during his time as CEO and we are privileged to have him share his knowledge and opinions with TCT.

My appreciation for Bernie. He really turned around the club!

Go the eels! Once we win the armwrestle, the game will open up for our talented backline to exploit.

If we can win the contest in the middle, I believe we will, I am confident we can break them on the edges.

Mann and Best have ordinary defence and I am looking forward to the right attack with Marata inside Penisini giving him confidence.

Maybe with Stoney at dummy hall we will not see Reeds long passes to first receiver. This could culminate in a bit more football between the 6 and 7 playing together.

There was a move they tried twice against the Storm. Dylan put up a high kick and MM ran through to outjump Papenhuyzen. It nearly worked against Papenhuyzen it might be worth trying again against Ponga

    How good was Bernie.

      Bernie was very good.
The other thing to note about Ponga is he will quite often look for the intercept or a knock down when confronted by a break made with support runners.

Always love Bernie on the podcast, such a wealth of knowledge. And it’s always nice to hear him say “we” and “us” when referring to the Parramatta Eels. An interesting comment he made was that clubs are going to be heavily investing in the 15-18 year old player age group. Parramatta has been doing this for a while now with current Eels: Reed Mahoney, Dylan Brown, Oregon Kaufusi, Will Penisini either in first grade or in contention having been scouted at these ages. There’s a few as depth and also those on the cusp of selection. And let’s not forget those now at other clubs who were developed or scouted in our pathways: Josh Curran, Sean Keppie, Stefano Utoikamanu, Matt Doorey. Whilst these players are not currently at the Eels they were recognised at an early age as having first grade potential and were in our junior rep programs.

I hope that Parramatta continue to expand and improve the junior development program so that we see more and more Eels juniors (local or otherwise) in the NRLM and NRLW

Cheers Ham. I can assure you that Bernie speaks that way every time I speak with him about Parra. It will be interesting to see the impact of that investment from other NRL clubs.

Enjoyed the chat with Bernie – fabulous stuff. Sums it up succinctly; if we have a kick return with intent, good line speed, discipline and smart kicking game to keep the pressure on are key – we don’t win without getting these right.
Marata selection is a key selection and having Lane on the other edge – really gives us an edge.
Thanks for organising guys, bring on Newcastle

Cheers DDay. Even with the changing nature of the game, those basics remain essential. I’m also very pleased with Marata’s selection on the edge.

Sixties I noticed on nrl.com home page that shows the captain’s picture. Manly n Parra in front of the other team’s. Maybe I’m looking to much into it but just maybe they are trying to tell us it’s a manly vs Parra Grand final.

Always will appreciate that a few times I made direct contact with Bernie via email (for a few reasons) when he was CEO he responded. Loved this pod and I liked how he pointed out the Parra products ( Brown, Paulo etc) playing now.

Shaun, Bernie always made time for supporters. He was often at Junior Reps at Cabramatta, & lower grades at Wenty so was very approachable. He was critical in the rejuvenation of the Eels.
