Whereas Brad Arthur rightfully stayed true to a winning formula in the past month he has moved swiftly to shake the team up following a heartbreaking last minute loss to Penrith on Sunday. The inclusion of first choice hooker Nathan Peats was a no-brainer mind you! The fiery #9 makes his return from a dislocated elbow (the very same week that Bevan French gets sidelined by the same injury as chance would have it) and as the Eels continue to search for cohesion in attack, it is certainly a hope of yours truly that Peats might be able to make a difference when the team is in possession of the Steeden.
Kaysa Pritchard is the big loser out of the return of Peats. While he had the inside running over Isaac De Gois in Rounds 1 and 2 it looks like Arthur is now looking for the experience of De Gois from the bench. As such Pritchard drops back to the Intrust Super Premiership where he will lock the scrum for the Magpies. Conversely, the big winner of the week is Daniel Alvaro who catapults from the Intrust Super Premiership right into the starting line up of the NRL team. The promotion is a deserved reward for Alvaro, who along with Rory O’Brien, has provided the Magpies with an outstanding platform up front on a weekly basis. His inclusion also offers the team a better rotational dynamic – serving as a much analogous replacement for Tim Mannah compared to David Gower. Speaking of Gower, he will be joining Pritchard in the black and white of the Magpies this week.

Aaron Pene | Blake Cook |
The Magpies may have secured the two points on the weekend as they ground out the New Zealand Warriors 26-14 but coach Joey Grima has rung through the changes. Following a season ending ACL injury to Luke Kelly, the increasingly multi-talented talented captain of the team – Cody Nelson – will don the #6 and partner Mitch Cornish in the halves. With Daniel Alvaro moving on to a higher calling James Hasson will partner the powerful Rory O’Brien in the starting front row while as mentioned earlier Kaysa Pritchard and David Gower will be starters in the backrow. NYC graduate Aaron Pene makes his Intrust Super Premiership debut and much like his bench brethren in Joseph Ualesi, will provide Grima with coverage of both the front and backrow.

The selection around dummy halves was always going to be challenging this week. Three into 2 was never going to work, unless BA wanted to channel Jason Taylor. Cameron King has gone well for Wenty, so it was going to be difficult to see him ending up on Wenty’s bench. Now we have Nelson moving to The halves for Wenty – his utility stocks must be on the rise.
I am very worried about this weekend; and I take into account Canberra and 5 day turn around. I hope the salary cap debacle has not had affect on the players. I would hope not; but we looked v lethargic last week, and errors were soft. I thought Kaysa was good and his Zip Zip has been v good. Props have to fire up
I was hoping Rory O’Brien would start in NRL side this week. His size and ball playing ability would have proved invaluable against the very impressive Raiders side that thrashed the Dogs Monday nite. What do you think is stopping his inclusion in the NRL side as I believe he has more skill than Alvaro?
I reckon O’Brien would be getting close as he has impressed in all of the Wenty matches so far. However, Alvaro has some runs on the board, from both last year and this year. Also, I’m not sure where some of the blokes sit in the cap. Can O’Brien be used? I’m not sure.
How is Scott schulte used from the bench? Where does he normally slot in when he comes on?
Hey, does anybody know what is up with alex twal?
Maybe Ham could update us on that.
Thanks 60’s, never doubted Peats would be straight back in as starting hooker. Interesting to hear your thoughts on Rory O’Brien I hope cap restraints don’t keep this guy out of 1st grade if his form warrants selection.
Also thought Gower had been playing pretty solid footy, maybe BA prefers the bigger bodies IE: Penni against the Raiders.
First time poster here.
I haven’t seen much, if any, of kelepi Tanginoa but he is continually starting for Wenty. Just wondering if he would be a suitable replacement for Paulo considering his size.
Welcome aboard Hearndo! Kelepi has been very impressive for Wenty in all but one game. Tremendous hits, runs and long minutes. His only poor performance possibly set back his claims for an early NRL inclusion. His shorter, stocky frame and pace probably sees him as an ideal replacement for Manu Ma’u if ever he is ruled out.
