Team List Tuesday – De Gois and Gower Get The Call

NRL Team List

In the face of enforced changes to due an injury to Nathan Peats and a suspension to Manu Ma’u, Brad Arthur has taken a straight-forward approach to addressing their replacements with Isaac De Gois and David Gower named to play the Bulldogs on Friday night. De Gois is the obvious candidate to replace Peats given his wealth of first-grade experience and has proven a capable deputy over the last two years for the Eels. Gower is a slightly more contentious pick, not through any fault of the man himself mind you, as both Daniel Alvaro and Kelepi Tanginoa would have been worthy selections here. Gower is the most seasoned player of the three though and offers the capability to plug’n’play into either the front or backrow.

The other change resultant from Manu’s suspension is that Kenny Edwards comes into the starting backrow from the bench. This will be his first starting jersey since Round 26 of the 2014 season.

Holden Cup Team List

After knocking off the Broncos in Round 1, the Eels slumped to a dissapointing 34-12 loss to the Cowboys on Saturday. Mason Cerruto is at the centre of backline reshuffle as he drops out of the team on the back of a horror first-half effort against North Queensland. Michael Doolan pushes from five-eighth to fullback and Dean Matterson, younger brother of ex-Eel Ryan, will make his Holden Cup debut in the halves as he partner Troy Dargan. Luke Burt has opted for an extended bench with the decision likely to come down to either Miller of Price on game-day.

Curiously, rising star Bevan French is absent from any team list after receiving clearance to return to the field after an injury to his hand. Stay tuned for a potential game-day change I guess!

In the NRL team, the changes are probably to be expected, though I was also keen for Kelepi to get a shot. He’s been braiding them at Wenty.
As far as Wenty is concerned, it’s good to see Kieren Moss get a run. He has been chomping at the bit to get a run and what better week than against his old team. Good luck mate.

To tack on to what Grumpy said, we are allowed the luxury of playing someone like Schulte in the Ron Massey Cup as he will not cripple Wenty’s player point quota in the grade. If for whatever absurd reason we had someone like David Gower (active NRL player) sitting around surplus to requirements in the NSW Cup we would not be able to play him in the RMC.

Scroll through to page 28 for a very concise explanation but the gist of it is that all clubs operate on a 100-point system where players are evaluated and weighted prior to the commencement of the season (although I imagine someone like Schulte might be given a weighting this week). I can’t give you specific values but someone like David Gower would weigh heavily on the scale given his NRL experience meaning you would have less seasoned players elsewhere in the team. Much like the salary cap, it is a mechanism to prevent hoarding of NSW Cup/ISP worthy players by an oligopoly of clubs.

I believe that Wenty Ron Massey had already invested many points on Yileen Gordon.
