Wooden spoon prevention meets finals credibility this Saturday, as a beaten-and-battered Parramatta side hosts a Canterbury outfit that last week somehow found its best footy in a game where they struggled to start.
In Round 6, the Roosters dominated the Eels, winning 46-6 on a wet night in Gosford, with Tarryn Aiken starring in her return from a shoulder injury.
Brydie Parker, Corban Baxter, and Sarah Paki all scored doubles as Parramatta’s winless start to the season stretched to six straight rounds, leaving them at the bottom of the table.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs were winning the hard yards at Belmore. Canterbury rebounded from their heaviest defeat of the NRLW season by claiming a rollercoaster 28-26 victory over the North Queensland, boosting their hopes of making their first finals appearance.
The victory defied the worst possible start for the Bulldogs when centre Daynnah Nankivell was sin-binned for a hip-drop tackle, and Cowboys fullback Francesca Goldthorp punished them immediately.
However, the Bulldogs flicked a switch and scored four unanswered tries in ten minutes for a 20-6 lead at the break. The Bulldogs held on as the Cowboys surged late, falling a couple of points shy in a 26-24 scoreline.
Two sides trending in opposite directions, and it’s the Eels who need last week’s misery to be the floor of their season, not a preview of what’s coming.

The Eels continue to make changes as their injury list rolls on, with Ryvrr-Lee Alo and Chloe Jackson ruled out with head knocks. Boss Kapua and Fontayne Tufuga join the starting side.
Martha Mataele is named in her normal spot on the wing, and Jasmin Morrissey is promoted to the starting lineup, with Zali Fay and Fleur Ginn in the reserves. A huge boost for the Eels does come at a good time, as Rachael Pearson returns to the halfback role, shuffling Jayde Herdegen to the bench.

The Game
There’s no dressing up how bad it looked for the Eels against the Roosters. Once Aiken found her confidence in the second half, the Eels had no answer.
Two long-range tries off spilled bombs summed up a defensive issue that’s been the story of the Eels’ season.
Getting Mataele and Pearson back changes the dynamics in the halves and out wide, and Georgallis will be desperate for his spine to have some cohesion after a week where the attack barely functioned.

The Eels lop-sided pre-season trial victory over the Bulldogs is now a distant memory, and it’s hard to believe that their complete dominance in that trial has been impossible to replicate in the season proper.
Not that the Dogs have been the model of consistency in 2026. Canterbury have conceded plenty of points themselves this year and were exposed against a Cowboys side that has struggled to post points.
When the Bulldogs are switched on, there are signs they are a dangerous unit. Tayla Preston controls the game at halfback, with Angelina Teakaraanga-Katoa leading from the middle, and dangerous strike out wide with Elizabeth MacGregor and Nankivell.
When they are not switched on, they show signs of poor discipline, concede field position, and let their opponents own the match momentum.
Against an Eels outfit that is desperate and will fired up on home turf, complacency is the one thing Canterbury can’t afford.
Boom – the Tohi-Hiku school of defence
Parramatta’s forwards will look to play with the physicality that’s been missing, and if Tohi-Hiku and Pearson can get back to what makes their combination work best with shape and variety, there’s a platform to at least be competitive in the NRLW’s Battle of the West.
Unfortunately for the Eels, the Bulldogs have shown the capacity to grind out a win and with a better settled outfit they will have too much polish for an Eels side still searching for their first competition points in 2026.
