Live Blog – Junior Rep Finals Week 1, Lisa Fiaola & Harold Matthews: Eels vs CC Roosters & Raiders

The second pairing of Junior Rep finals matches features the Eels taking on the Central Coast Roosters in the Lisa Fiaola Cup, followed by Parra’s clash with the Raiders in the Harold Matthews.

After finishing the regular season undefeated, the Eels Fiaola Cup side were awarded the minor premiership. They defeated the Central Coast Roosters just two weeks ago, and will be confident of again defeating their fourth-placed opponent.

In contrast, the fifth placed Eels Matts team are yet to face the Raiders in 2026. As such, there is no head to head form guide to help find the winner. It’s an elimination finals game so the Eels will need to put their best foot forward.

The action kicks off with the Fiaola Cup match at 1pm, followed by the Matts at 2:30pm.

First Half

Eels to kick off. Strong opening set from the CC Roosters. They work over halfway and get to a clearing kick that is well taken for Enosi Tuipulotu. Armanhi Cook takes a smart dart from dummy-half as fellow spine member Sienna Manuo runs it down the left on the next play. That sets it up for Rylee Cash on the last as she heaves it to the right. The Roosters let it bounce and an energetic chase from the Eels forces a drop out!

The Eels field the restart on the bounce and begin to work from right-to-left but a fluent backline shift down the left edge is interrupted as the pass from Nicholas to Wansey pings off the right shoulder of the left centre.

A penalty to the visitors puts them on the attack as the find touch inside Parramatta’s half and get to work. They venture down their left edge to some success but it is the transition back to the posts that yields the premium result. A clever short ball releases their prop Temete and she is able to power through the last line defence of Nicholas and just get the ball down on the line.

The Eels will play from behind today.

An error from the kick off gifts the Eels with the right of reply. They work to the right as Morgan-Pritchard steams into the line. Manuo goes back left but has to pull up in her run as her supporting players get in potentially obstructing positions. To the right with Nicholas now but she is corralled near the side line. A flat set from the Eels here and it ends with a bit of a whimper as Manuo’s grubber kick is trapped in the front line and dived on by the Roosters.

Armanhi Cook continues her bright start in Parra’s next possession with another testing run through the ruck. The Eels complete the set with a midfield bomb that the Roosters bring in cleanly.

The game is settling into something of a rhythm now as both teams work through their sets. Havana Cook is a bit unlucky not to win a penalty for a second effort in an early ruck run but Kaizen Morgan-Pritchard doesn’t need any whistle as she explodes down the right edge! A massive break out of nowhere as she is eventually dragged down by the fullback. Only two tackles left for the Eels here as A.Cook tries to crash over. Cash tries to roll it in-goals on the last and I thought there was a suggestion of a knock on from the defence there but the call is play on.

Now a penalty goes to the visitors, their second of the half as they get the assist down the field.

Lots of offloads and passes from the Roosters here as they play hot potato but the Eels stay composed in defence. Unfortunately, the awkward positioning of the sun induces an error from Ruby Enosi Tuipulotu as she tries to defuse the attacking bomb. Not the first player today to struggle under the high ball in that position. We saw similar in the Tarsha Gale and SG Ball.

More offloading from the Roosters here. Really trying to challenge the Eels by changing the point of attack. They try the power game on the last as they attack underneath around the ruck but Parra shoulder up nicely and turn the ball over on tackles.

What won’t help the Eels is the cheap turnover coming out of their red zone. A huge change handed to the Roosters.

The visitors waste zero time capitalising as they spin it left from the scrum win and simply catch the Eels a defender short. Not sure how Parrmatta played the numbers game incorrectly there but Sienna Kennedy-Wilkie is the big beneficiary as she strolls over untouched out wide.

Try scored by the Central Coast Roosters. Conversion successful.

We saw in the SG Ball game just prior but the visiting team has really thrown everything into the opening of this game. The Eels were able to hold on and turn it around in the Ball, can the same happen here?

Expansive sets from both teams following the second try to the Roosters. Parramatta’s right edge continues to ask questions of their opponents but once again the home team can’t build on a line break as they run it on the last and have a pass from Nicholas correctly ruled forwards.

Thankfully it is the Roosters who blink first as they lose control of the ball trying to offload just over halfway and it sets the Eels up beautifully for a scrum play. Cash plays to the right and digs deep into the line before dropping the ball off perfectly to a flying Hine Rikiti who roars through a gap and jets off 50m to score!

Try scored by Hine Rikiti. Conversion successful by Sienna Manuo.

So the Eels are on the board, how do they follow it up?

Good ruck work starts the next set before Armanhi Cook rips off a 15m run in behind the ruck. Nicholas takes the Eels into the opposition territory before a powerful run and offload from Tuivaiti has them knocking on the door of the goal line but unfortunately Cash’s grubber kick is fractionally too heavy off the boot and yields a 7-tackle set.

Wow. I don’t think I have ever seen that call. Not saying it was wrong but a cold drop at first receiver on the last has been undone by a penalty for offside defenders. No one was within 8m of the half when she dropped it. Huge whistle for the Roosters, can they make the most of it?

Lots of power plays from the Tri-colours as they try to punch holes in the ruck defence of the Eels. Parramatta are resilient and eventually it leads to an optimistic grubber kick that Tegan Nicholas swiftly defuses with smart positioning.

A tough set follows but Armanhi Cook completes it with a cracking kick that rolls deep in-goals and forces the Roosters to play at it. Tremendous play.

A bit of redemption for Enosi Tuipulotu as she claims an extremely difficult bomb under considerable pressure at the end of that set. Great nerves.

In the shadow of half time now as the Eels try to engineer points with under a minute on the clock. A very good run from Georgia Wansey puts the home team in position for a midfield bomb and the ball is lost forwards and then played at by an offside defender! It is a difficult range to take the penalty shot at so the Eels opt for the tap play but they keep it conservative and head to the sheds with the score unchanged.

Second Half

Roosters to kick off.

Kaizen Morgan-Pritchard wastes no time in the second half as she produces another sensational run mid set and then offloads to support inside for a huge gain. The Eels immediately attack down their left when they are barely turned away to bring up the last. There is some hesitancy from the Eels on the last as they centre it to Rylee Cash but if anything that lulls the Roosters into lowering their guard! She takes them on and just glides through under the posts!

Try scored by Rylee Cash. Conversion successful by Sienna Manuo.

Eels trail 10-12

Oh no! The Eels are surging. A dominant set after points that has the Roosters reeling. They get to their last and fine Charlie Noble for the attacking kick. She sends it up to the left where two Eels get to it uncontested – except for each other! I think the knock-on will be charged to Wansey there but it was an open channel to the line there if the ball was caught.

A call goes to the Blue & Gold in their next possession. A strip is ruled against the Roosters. Hard to tell from my angle but you take those sort of penalties. Manuo has a good run that forces no markers as Armanhi Cook gets the ball wide of the ruck for a run net. Back to Manuo next play as she holds it up and runs to bring up the last. There is a clear plan on the final play for the home team as they attack the short side down their right. It is the fullback Tegan Nicholas with her trademark cutout pass that is the decisive difference! She loops a quality ball to Ruby Enosi Tuipulotu who is too good not to take advantage of the opportunity as she fights her way over into the corner!

Try scored by Ruby Enosi Tuipulotu. Conversion unsuccessful by Sienna Manuo.

Eels trail 14-12

Ruby fields the restart on the bounce as the Eels start the process of rucking it out. Morgan-Pritchard and Falls get stuck in as Cook adds another dummy half run to follow them. Toutai breaks through a host of tackles for a brilliant run! It brings up the last but Cash ends up eating the tackle as she doesn’t like the options to her right and doesn’t want to make a reckless play back inside.

Huge play from the Roosters now as they flip the field with a 40/30. Superb kick out of dummy half to make it happen. They squander the dazzling play though with an early error in the resultant set.

Parramatta respond in expansive fashion with an early raid down the left edge that sees Nicholas and Havana Cook combine for a line break. Havana backs herself to take on the fullback in Hall but a lovely cover tackle cuts her down and puts in her into touch.

Another error from the Tri-colours prevents them from asking any serious questions of the Eels. This one comes with a wide shift to their left as the pass to the looping fullback goes too high and is tipped forwards in the attempt to pull it down.

So close! A bulldozing carry from Sarah Alameddine splits the Roosters open but her pass to support on the inside is intercepted! She was trying to find her rake in Cook there but it was the opposition #9 that got between the two Eels. Damn!

See-sawing field position battle now as the two teams deliver haymaker after haymaker to each other but they keep ending up as glancing blows. The Roosters run it on the last here and it is fullback on fullback at the final line as Nicholas scythes down Hall for the critical tackle.

Hine Rikiti makes a break down the right and uses a lovely in-and-away to put her opposition on skates! Has she got the wheels to win the race to the line? No! She is dragged down at the very last. However a penalty follows next play for offside defenders. No bin! We tap and go left all the way to Havana Cook who is barely pulled down short of the line. Manuo takes the centreing play and then finds Alameddine on a normal ball to the right and hello! Sarah has strolled through! The lock forward throws a dummy that everyone falls for! Deserved reward for the busy forward today.

Nice catch and run from Cash from the shortish kickoff. Morgan-Pritchard and Alameddine heabvily involved early on here to establish the Eels before the line is split by Georgia Wansey following clever work from Armanhi Cook! Georgia is tackled short of the line to bring up the last and from there it is hot hot potato! A string of desperate offloads and passes sees the ball travel the width of the field before Ruby Enosi Tuipulotu shows hot feet to match the hot hands of her team mates and score cutting back infield from the right sideline!

Try scored by Ruby Enosi Tuipulotu. Conversion unsuccessful by Sienna Manuo.

Eels lead 24-12

Hayloh Talagi on kick return duty now. KMP follows her down the right before Cook and Tuivaiti work together to then find Falls through the ruck. Nice short ball playing between forwards there and it wins a penalty. Cook is constantly scheming here, outstanding game from her really, and she earns a follow up penalty for a high tackle now. And again! Cook out of dummy half and linking up with Cash for nearly put her 5/8 over. Only a desperate tackle from the fullback saves the day.

To the left now as Nicholas earns a fresh set for a batted pass. Falls centres the ball with a furious charge that takes her all the way to the goal line and from there it is the Nicholas to Enosi Tuipulotu pipeline! Too much time and space for a fullback as accomplished as Nicholas and she finds her try-scoring winger in stride for yet another meat pie!

Try scored by Ruby Enosi Tuipulotu. Conversion unsuccessful by Sienna Manuo.

Another short restart claimed by the Eels but they end up making an error two tackles later. Falls has brought plenty of juice from the bench but she is the one with the mistake there.

Roosters get a chance to finish on a high note and they are pushing hard here. Some good runs put them inside Parra’s red zone before a clever bit of ball-playing from their prop Kahuroa allows the fullback Hall to attack from the inside seam and cut through the ruck defence of the Eels. Nice play.

Aggressive offloading from the Tri-colours here as they look to impact the scoreboard in the finals moments of this contest. Some savage defence from Rikiti slams the door shut on them though as the drives a potential line break into touch and brings an end to this game!

Eels appear to be as per program.

First Half

Canberra will kick off to start this match.

Goodness, an error from the kick off. Disastrous start for the Blue & Gold. That was Tamati there with the unforced error and the Raiders make Parra pay for it immediately as the Eels get their defence from the scrum feed all wrong. They over-commit to the outside options and just open a crease for the backrower Lauvao to press straight through. Deary me. Poor offence and defence to start this one for our lads.

Plenty of intent from the visitors here. They are attacking the Eels with sharp ball movement right before the defensive line but Parramatta do well to hold on. However the game spirals further from Parra’s control at the conclusion of the set as Liam Martin spills the clearing bomb sideways. It is real line ball there but you open the door for the referee to make a call and he does just that as he indicates it was dropped forwards.

And again the Eels can’t defend the error as it takes just the one play last time from the scrum. Parramatta frustratingly over-correct on the missed assignment to the backrower last time so Canberra adjust by playing out the back to their five-eighth Logue who just dummies and crosses untouched. Disastrous start to this game.

The Eels are still without a proper set to their name and it very nearly spirals into a third straight try as the Raiders slice through the flimsy defence of the Eels’ right edge. The last pass to the winger Morrisey is tipped forwards though and Liam Martin intercepts the knock on before he is driven into touch and the officials get the sequence of indiscretions right as the home team finally get the ball.

Jake Capovilla has an immediate impact with a half break and offload to Salter down the right. Liam Martin nearly crosses out wide left to bring the last. This is a good set from our boys. Can they cap it off? Two passes wide on the last as Leiataua goes to Tamati who hoists it to the right where Alhazim gets a free run at the ball!? What? Elijah says thank you very much and dots it down without a hand on him for a much needed hit back on the score board.

Try scored by Elijah Alhazim. Conversion successful by Liam Martin.

Compounding errors from the Eels now. Just as they finally string together some good footy, they let the kickoff bounce and it beats the clean up crew to roll dead. A drop out after they finally get on the board.

Canberra win the battle for the short restart and start the process of hammering the ruck. Oh that is a good, low tackle from Tamati with assistance from big Tyson Puleitu over the top! It has jolted the ball free in a huge defensive play. Phew. Now to work through the next set.

Memea Epe and Martin with the early work here. Nice carry from the fullback. Now it is Lama before Brown has a lovely hit and spin and offload to put Bell into secondary space! Haynes brings up the last as Bell looks for an incisive play in behind the ruck. The defenders are scrambling around him and for a moment it looks like he might get to the line but he is dragged down!

I can’t keep up with the end-to-end stuff as now the Raiders explode into the backfield. Martin is called into action at the last line and gets a defensive assist from his cover defence as the Raiders pour on the pressure. The Eels are holding on by the skin of their teeth here but it comes to an end with a heavy post-contact push from the centre Atilua who is able to fight through a pair of defenders and fall on the white stripe for the try.

The Eels desperately need to slow this game down, strip back the errors and get some good defensive contact into their front line.

Canberra are winning the collisions here as they roll to halfway and eventually win a penalty for an escort. Just silly stuff. Martin had that covered easily. Instead the Raiders get a free shot inside Parra’s red zone.

The Eels need someone to make a play here and it is the right winger Alhazim who provides it with an important jam. He pressures the sweeping playmaker into an error and the Eels come away with a scrum feed.

Now a penalty for the home team. Lama takes the tap from the touch finder. Curtis Brown and Hayden Bell plow through the ruck now. Right two passes to Martin for a carry and he offloads to Salter who is pulled down short of the line. Sloppy pass on the last that falls between Bell and Leiataua and the halfback does a stellar job to regather the loose ball, beat a defender and rip a legit attacking kick off to his left. How crucial it proves to be as well! William Memea Epe mimics the earlier effort of Alhazim to pursue the attacking bomb and leaves the ground to make a beauty of a mark and score out wide!

Try scored by William Memea Epe. Conversion successful by Liam Martin.

Really good set after points here. The Eels are finally getting a foothold in the ruck as they punch it into Canberra’s half. It sets up an attacking bomb that Memea Epe takes a good crack at but he spills it into touch on the Canberra 20m mark. Still a neat conclusion to the set after points. Very happy with that.

More tough sledding for Parra’s right edge as they concede a short line break that is swiftly snuffed out. That brings up the last as the Raiders execute or rather misexecute their initial attacking kick. It leads a second kick down their right edge that rolls dead where Martin is then pushed in the back with the ball dead. A penalty on the 20m line instead of the 7-tackle set.

Parra move with the momentum shift here as they take a quick restart from the touch finder. They work from right to left before ultimately running it down their right edge on the last but Salter is cut down in a solid one-on-one tackle.

40/20 attempt is defused by Martin who then goes on to make a strong kick return. Memea Epe feeds off that with a strong surge of his own as the eels work into the red zone. Bell weaves and runs and offloads to Haynes to bring up the last as Martin ventures right to Alhazim. The winger cuts back infield and finds Tamati for the kick but the Raiders are able to clean it up in the field of play.

Parra’s right edge defends with better integrity this set and the Raiders are forced to make a deep clearing kick as Martin leaps on the ball for another meaty return. Bell torments Canberra’s right edge with another bustling carry that draws a whistle for a high tackle. A minute to play here as they find touch. Toailoa leads the way as Bell feeds Haynes next. Right to Tamati who is hammered in a very, very good tackle and that runs enough clock to see out the half as the Raiders hang on.

Manic happenings in the first 30min. Some dreadful early play from the Eels as they handed opportunities to an explosive Canberra outfit. Thankfully they have fought their way back into it and despite trailing at the break have had the better of the running at oranges. Huge second half awaits us now!

Second Half

Eels to kick off.

A deep kick off from Salter that thankfully stays in the field of play. Canberra immediately make an expansive move down their right edge that the Eels are able to barely nullify. Still very good metres for the visitors but play slows down for a belated offload after a held call. The attacking bomb skews left off the boot and sails over the sideline on the full!

Okay, nice break for Parra there. Sharp run from Leiataua now as he splits the right edge of the Raiders and fights hard for even more metres once the defence gets to him. To the left as Martin rips a cutout pass to Memea Epe as he smartly sorties back infield. Sensible decision making and it quickly reaps the reward! Leiatua booms the crossfield bomb to the far right side on the last as Alhazim competes for the ball in that air. He balloons it backwards to a waiting Leonard Salter who claims the ball and dives over for the first points of the second half! Oh the conversion bounces off the cross bar and away. So close!

Try scored by Leonard Salter. Conversion unsuccessful by Liam Martin.

The Eels complete the set after points. Always an important metric. This one erred on the tougher side as the Raiders aimed up but a neat kick from Tamati helps round out the possession. However an error from Alhzaim in the reply clearing kick leaves the Raiders in a position to attack the Parramatta goal line. They have been so effective in short field scenarios, can the Eels turn them away here?

The very quick answer is no as their dummy half is able to burrow over from short range follow a series of barge over attempts. Just as quickly as the Eels got back to level pegging they find themselves behind again.

Parramatta try to employ some aggro and line speed in defence but the imposing left centre Alitua is able to absorb several hits and spin it into a line break. Impressive work from the opposing centre and thankfully it doesn’t lead to points as the Eels repel the running option on the last. However the home team immediately turn it back over and find themselves on the ropes. They are long odds to hold out here but desperately need to for the sake of this content.

The referee has spotted a baby knock-on from the Raiders as they attempt to drive it over the line with one of their big men so the defensive job gets done this time around.

Another incomplete possession from the Eels here. At least this set gets to halfway before the Eels attempted to pull the trigger on a raid down their left. The pass to Memea Epe sails too high though and the winger tips it into touch trying to gain control of the difficult ball.

Time off for an injured Eel. They are eventually escorted to the sideline as Chris Suaalii is injected into the fray.

Desperate set of defence from the Eels. Canberra run it on the last where the Eels meet them equally down Parra’s left edge.

It means there is a rough set to follow as they try to drive the ball off their own goal line. The pressure of field position takes its toll as Tamati tries to hoof a big clearing kick downfield. The Raiders pour through kick pressure and charge the ball down via their five-eighth Logue who gets a room service first bounce straight into his chest that sees him race 25m to the line and score. Logue has been immense for the visitors in this battle.

That might be the dagger given how desperately the Eels have been fighting in recent sets.

Another error under the high ball from Parra puts the Raiders in the box seat. Alhazim the unfortunate Eel struggling under the sun there once again.

The Eels need something close to a miracle here as the Raiders pile on the pressure. The big right edge shift seemingly has them odds-on to score but a jam from Memea Epe combined with a tipped pass from the Canberra centre Stokes leads to a pseudo intercept! William strides out for 90m and despite a spirited chase from the Raiders he scores! They do restrict him to scoring out wide however so pressure is on Martin for the extras but he has ice in his veins! The boomerang conversion pulls from right to left and falls over the black dot.

There is life in these Eels yet but is there enough for one or more scores?

A penalty will help as over eager defenders are pinged for infringing inside 10m. Salter takes the restart from the touch finder as we come in field with Puleitu. Capovilla storms over defenders with a bulldozing carry as Martin nearly slices through down the left next. Leiataua is caught to bring up the last so we go two wide to Tamati. He rolls it in-goals and only a strong effort from the Raiders sees them get back into the field of play.

Tempo is lifting from the Eels now. Suaalii lays the wood with a fearsome hit before Memea Epe provides a ranging kick return that nearly opens the Raiders up! He is dragged down after a big return and the Eels are back on the attack. Tamati steps off his right and is taken on the line before Flynn Manu’a is trapped short of the line on the burrow attempt. That brings up the last and the Eels need to score. They attack down their left and have the Raiders on the back foot as Martin digs into the line and feeds Lama with the crisp pass as the left centre glides over to score! Martin makes it a whole new ball game with the extras.

Capovilla and Bell with strong impetus with the Eels here. Haynes goes next before Bell has ANOTHER run. Insane engine on this young man. Parra run it on the last and it nearly eventuates! Oh it was on too! Lama beats his man and offloads back inside before a pass is rifled back left to Memea Epe but it travels forwards! So close!

Finally there is an error from the Raiders from one of their high balls and Alhazim fittingly enough gets some redemption with a ranging kick return! He poaches at least 25m there with a huge effort. The Eels surge and surge! Tough work up the middle and who else but Hayden Bell with the clutch carry into the teeth of the fatiguing defence. He catches out sluggish defenders and wears one on his chin and the referee has seen it!

A penalty to potentially win it for the Blue & Gold but this game is far from over given what we saw against Souths earlier this year. The Eels have to survive the short restart with a minute to play.

Penalty goal successful by Liam Martin.

Midrange restart from the Raiders. The ball is tipped by the visitors and the Eels dive on the loose ball! They are nearly home! The Eels complete a rare 4-game sweep in the first week of the Junior Reps finals as every grade progresses deeper into the finals!

It’s great for our club to have some positive results to somewhat ameliorate our horrid start to the NRL season. A couple of top notch comebacks.
