Match Updates

A late change or two for the Eels. Cyrus Bloomfield drops out of the backline with Parkka Perrotta-Dowling replacing him while Billy Fanene and Chaise Attard swaps places between the starting team and the interchange bench.

First Half

Parra kicking off to start the Harold Matthews today. Running away from the Cabra Leagues Club in the first half as well.

We are underway as the Eels send it deep. Cronulla get to task with a sound set that sees them work from right to left. Nice kick pressure from Hayden Bell on the last and the Eels pick up the first penalty of the game with the kick chase ruled down town.

First possession for Parra on halfway as result. Fanene gets the opening charge and it is a blitz on tackle two afterwards! Rapid shift to the right as Risati and Alameddine link up. Zain feeds Davis on the sweep who in turn uncorks a slick cutout pass to McCloskey on the right wing. Cobi has plenty of work to do as he races downfield from roughly 30m out and is met by cover defence metres short of the line but powers through contact and gets the ball down with the aid of momentum! The conversion narrowly waved away from the sideline.

Try scored by Cobi McCloskey. Conversion unsuccessful by Zain Alameddine.

Eels lead 4-0

Parra successful navigate the next set but concede a penalty early in the defensive follow-up to give the Sharks a leg out of their own quarter. Cronulla are able to drive the ball into Parra’s redzone in reply where they test McCloskey with a bomb on the last. He can’t come down with it cleanly but is able to ground it in-goals before an attacker gets their hands on it to lead to a line drop-out.

Long restart here. Cronulla have some early running care of a tremendous charge from one of their big boppers. He is held up over the line so the PTB comes back 10m and on the next play the Eels are caught slacking around the ruck as Liam Challenor turns the backrower Sepic back inside and he gets a saloon passage to the posts. Disappointing ruck defence for sure there.

Try scored by Thomas Sepic. Conversion successful by Liam Challenor.

Sharks lead 6-4

Momentum swings towards Cronulla now with a barnstorming carry from the kickoff. Eels defenders are skittled and while the home team recover the Sharks press their advantage with an early kick that traps Davis deep in his own half. Clinical set.

It is shaping up as a real slog for Parramatta in the next possession but Chris Moala picks up a hugely relieving penalty. Nice work between Alameddine and Fanene comes next as the half puts his forward through half a gap off his left hip. Parra look to roll on from that play but on the next tackle the referee spies a marginal forward pass.

Great read and jam from McCloskey while Hayden Bell makes an important cover tackle later in the set. Cronulla are throwing plenty at the Eels with short balls through the middle and quick fire shifts to either edge but Parra are holding up for the most part. The Eels earn another penalty on the last tackle of Cronulla’s possession when Davis is taken in the air trying to defuse an attacking bomb.

Parra’s right edge threatens early in the next set as Noa finds Tahu-Apiata with an offload but the Sharks react sharply. The Eels complete the set with a regulation clearing kick but again concede a penalty early defensively to take get the Sharks out of trouble.

Stinging defence from Bell and Polley jolts the ball loose! Big chance for the Eels now. Attard gets an early run before Polley has a nice dart in behind the ruck. Left to Alameddine who dummies and goes before getting draged down and Risati sparks a right edge movement on the next play. Quick ball is funneled out to Noa who again seeks an offload aggressively. He finds his fullback Davis looping around who catch and passes in one smooth motion to McCloskey. The right flanker again has a bit of work to but fights past defenders in the right corner to bag an early double! Alameddine drills the extras from out wide after making a marginal adjustment from his first attempt.

Try scored by Cobi McCloskey. Conversion successful by Zain Alameddine.

Eels lead 10-6

Kasinga Now does a really nice job tidying up a midrange restart from the Sharks. The Eels are no-frills this set – at least up until the final play – as Risati hoists a midfield bomb. McCloskey is playing with his hair on fire today as he screams through in pursuit. He sails high in competition for the ball and juggles it off his initial attempt before landing and reclaiming it on the full! What an effort! With the ball in hand all that is left to do is fall over the line and claim the first half hatty!

Try scored by Cobi McCloskey. Conversion successful by Zain Alameddine.

Eels lead 16-6

The Sharks are offside from the kickoff but an early mistake from the Eels in the resultant set releases the pressure valve. Cronulla will feed a centrefield scrum ~35m off their own line. They play right from the loosehead win and look to have grassed the ball in an adventurous continuation of play down the same side but the Eels have hit a playmaker late so the call comes back there.

Again the Sharks build down their right edge early in the following set. They switch to their left where their five-eighth Swann seemingly strolls over. It is all a bit too easy and you know why? There was a cheeky obstructer in the defensive line that the ref immediately penalises. Unfortunately the Eels are again pulled up for a forward pass around the ruck for the second time this half so the Sharks go right back on the attack.

Same pattern for Cronulla here as they spin right early before looking to work play back to the left. Risati is getting through a good chunk of work in defence as the Sharks continue to test the Parra half but he is holding up. The Sharks look to dab a kick in behind Parra’s right edge on the last but McCloskey and Davis are both on hand to shepherd it over the dead-ball line.

Nice work from Bell in the next set as he ricochets off defenders for a good run around the ruck. The Eels get it fractionally wrong on the last however as the bomb sails too heavy off the boot for a 20m restart. That spirals into a penalty for a high tackle to give the Sharks a healthy extended possession.

Their halfback Challenor nearly bursts through Parra’s left edge but the Eels barely hold on. Back to the left now as the Sharks are able to burrow over from short range through their nuggety backrower Parkin. Crucial blow on the stroke of half time as the Sharks narrow the gap to a converted try.

Try scored by Cruz Parkin. Conversion unsuccessful by Liam Challenor.

Parramatta Eels 16 lead the Cronulla Sharks 10

Second Half

Eels to receive the ball. Running towards the Cabra Leagues Club.

Two pass shift to Attard for the opening carry. Eels work left to Nauer who gets quick PTB to let the Eels go left again for a nice gain. Risati sends up a midfield bomb on the last but the Sharks plunder a big return due to a fractured chase. Again the Eels are penalised for what I believe was a late hit but there was nothing in that. Soft whistle.

Still, Cronulla with the tap restart from 10m out. They play left for the opening three tackles and a dart from their dummy half earns a set restart. The Eels are clinging on here and repel the rake Beckett on a second crash over attempt before forcing the turnover on tackles out wide. There is a mountain of work to do to get out of trouble though with the first tackle just 1m off their own line and the Sharks swarm in defence to drive the Eels back and force a drop out. Parra go short and display some marvelous skill to tip the ball back and recover it! Wowza. Think that was Perrotta-Dowling down the left with the big play. A timely penalty then allows the Eels to reset positively.

Or at least attempt to reset. Just as it looked like the Sharks were coming unstuck down their left edge the final pass from Davis to his support runners in Moala and McCloskey falls inbetween and betwixt as the Sharks pounce on the loose pill. Speaking of loose pills the Sharks force an error with their attacking bomb in the following set but can’t clean it and score in the wake of the mistake. They still get a scrum feed but that was on a silver platter there.

Terrific defence in the following set for the Eels as the Sharks throw the kitchen sink at Parra’s right edge but they stand tall. There is chaos on the last play as the visitors get two kicks away from what was initially a grubber. It looks like the Eels have knocked on with Noa’s attempt to dive on the ball but that changes to a penalty for possibly a high shot? Big boon either way.

Noa gets the opening carry next set with Polley in tow. Left to Davis for a run before Polley recentres the ball. Alameddine and Davis zip down the left on the last as the fullback rolls in a nice grubber kick but the Sharks defend it really well and come away with a penalty a few tackles later.

The Sharks squander the fresh set but so too do the Eels when they have Cronulla dead to rights! Lovely play from the left edge sees the home team slice through out wide but the pass back inside to support is dropped! Think it might have been the half Zain Alameddine there with the costly drop. Points left on the table for sure there.

Thankfully the Sharks are quick to cough it up next so the Eels get a chance to right the wrongs of their last possession. Scrum set to the left from 35m out and shockingly the Eels elect to kick on the first tackle. They must have liked the look the Sharks gave them there but their fullback Beattie races back to be closest to the bouncing ball. It kicks wildly back towards Parra’s goal line beating both front runners from either team and the Sharks are able to clean it up. Odd call given they have a full set to play inside prime real estate.

Polley powers through more work next set while Fanene falls over the advantage line to set up time and space for the attacking kick. It is weighted perfectly as Taju-Apiata contests it but pulls his hands away late so as not to knock it on. It bounces towards the in-goals and the kick chase traps the Sharks inside for a drop-out.

Sharks go short and clearly knock it on. I mean clearly but officials rule play on. That then spirals into a penalty for Cronulla in a monstrous swing of momentum. I am left stunned that it wasn’t pulled up.

The ball doesn’t lie though as the Sharks misexecute a raid down their right edge as they push against the Parra goal line defence. The loose ball is scooped up by Tahu-Apiata who quickly offloads to Perrotta-Dowling on his left. The winger has open fields in front of him and the length of the Cabra straight to gallop and he has the legs to bring it home! The Eels deliver a devasting riposte after a dreadful missed call.

Try scored by Parkka Perrotta-Dowling. Conversion unsuccessful by Zain Alameddine.

Eels lead 20-10

Risati theatens early on down the right before Polley notches up another carry. The set is completed with a midfield bomb that the Sharks tidy up without complication. Offside defenders for the Eels lead to a penalty and Cronulla will have a good shot at narrowing the margin here.

Their halves both make incisive runs early on and it lays the platform for a simple try to the lock Stepic who gets his second of the game. Poor defence around the posts there and the Sharks make it a 4-point deficit as a result.

Try scored by Thomas Sepic. Conversion successful by Liam Challenor.

Sharks trail 16-20

54min gone

So we now have a grand stand finish to this contest. Can the Eels hold on with just under 6min to play? Nothing fancy from Cronulla here as they punch it up the guts before Davis swoops on their kick to five the Eels solid field position. Moala and McCloskey also roll up the sleeves and the latter wins a huge penalty as he fights for his feet in the tackle.

Touch finder is marked over halfway but a poor PTB from Noa undoes the Eels on tackle one. He pleads his case to the referee but it looks like he rushed to his feet there. Dang.

Dear oh dear, it proves to be costly as well as the Sharks are able to catch Parra short with their left edge attack. Simple hands there enough to get their winger over in the corner. Challenor gets the chance to put Cronulla in front for the first time today and that close rolls over 58min played. It is a tough shot from the left sideline but he nails it and suddenly the Eels are staring down the barrel of defeat.

Try scored by the Sharks. Conversion successful by Liam Challenor.

Sharks lead 22-20

58min gone

The Eels have to go short and Alameddine tries to catch the visitors napping with a squib kick for himself. Alas, they were not asleep to it and claim it comfortably. He then is penalised for holding down and the Sharks will get a full set to play this one out. They keep it simple and Challenor tries to pin the Eels in-goals with a grubber kick but it barely rolls dead and Parra get another roll of the dice.

An early shift to Perrotta-Dowling nets nice metres and a penalty but time is off for an injured Eel.

Touch finder is marked 15m short of halfway as the Eels have one last play to steal the win back. They spin it to their right and have a glint of space to work with but the sliding defence of the Sharks arrives in time and brings an end to a gut-wrenching game for the Eels. They played so well for large stretches but came undone at the end in a bitter loss.

Match Updates

Eels look to be as per program today.

Parra kicking off in the first half. A deep strike that is fielded in-goals. Croulla open up the game with ruck work down the left stretch of the field before slowly centreing the ball. The midfield bomb  is well taken by Howlett as he fights through the kick chase and earns a penalty.

Fletcher finds touch ~12m downfield and the Eels get to work. Some sharp work in front of the defensive line early on but the Sharks hold on. Howlett is well taken down the left but in the switch of play to the right Fletcher laces a perfectly weighted grubber kick for Beattie that earns the home team a drop-out. Cronulla go long and the man that did so well a play prior has a moment he wants back as Fletcher makes a meal of the kick reception. It gives the Sharks a big reprieve early on.

Nice side on shot from Petrus brings up the last tackle as Rokosuka defuses the attacking bomb in style. Tough set will come for the Eels in reply but strong charges from Johansson and Farrugia are pivotal in getting them out of danger. Lovely ball work from the pigs nearly puts Lucien into open space but a grass cutter tackle brings the big man down and the Eels settle for a completed set with a neat kick.

Busy work from Max Popo in defence next set and again Howlett is called on to claim the clearing kick with a little bit of interest. Fletcher steers the Eels right early in the next set before looking back inside for his parter in crime as Talataina is barely brought down. A venture down the left doesn’t quite hit the mark as Rokasuka has to clean up a loose pass and go back infield and on the next play Petrus looks for the speccy offload down the same side but it comes out of the hand wrong and travels miles forwards for a 20m restart.

Both wingers have looked comfortable under the high ball early on as Farrugia defuses an attacking bomb down the right. However he is pulled up for a sloppy PTB and the Sharks get a premium set of possession as a result. Centrefield scrum for the visitors on the cusp of the red zone. They go right where Talataina makes an early tackle and much like Farrugia a play before a sloppy PTB results in an early turnove. Phew.

Now Lorenzo feeds the scrum as the Eels go two passes right for Vella to get a run. Talagi follows him up before Johansson bursts into the backfield out of nowhere! The sudden gamebreaking play leads to a clean pass to the flying Rokasuka in support and Lorima centres the ball a tad for the opening points of the game! Great work from the left edge there. Fletcher has a reasonably straight forward shot at goal here and duly obliges to give the Eels a 6-point lead.

Try scored by Lorima Rokasuka. Conversion succesful by Lincoln Fletcher.

Eels lead 6-0

11min gone

Suboptimal follow-up from the Eels as the ball spills out of Lucien’s grasp in the tackle. Immediately the Sharks go on the counterattack and it doesn’t take them long to strike back as their lock Thomas Dellow uses some light feet to dance over next to the posts. Coach killing stuff there from Parra.

Try scored by Thomas Dellow. Conversion successful by Callum Granthum.

Sharks lock the scores up at 6-all.

The Eels survive a subsequent raid from the Sharks only to give them a piggy-back penalty next set for a high tackle. Oh that is timely from Rokasuka as he intercepts a dangerous flick pass from the Cronulla five-eigth Grantham. For a second I thought he might kick clear for a 90m effort but the cover defence get to him in the nick of time. The sloppy play continues from the home team though as Talataina strays too close to the sideline on his clearing kick and spots the Sharks a good 35m of field position as a result.

And another error leads to the points as Grantham looks for the same play that Rokaka intercepted last time around. This time the backhand flick is lofted over the defence and scooped up near the ankles by Blackburn-Kingi. The conversion is waved away from the right sideline.

Try scored Dallas Blackburn-Kingi. Conversion unsuccessful by Callum Granthum.

Sharks lead 10-6

23min gone

Now the Sharks make a meal of the kickoff as they allow to bounce and kick towards the dead-ball line. Long drop-out taken as the Eels get to work. Popo and Petrus work the ball from middle to left but on the next play a spirited charge from Popo – his second in three plays – sees the lock forward lose the pill into contact.

Thankfully the Sharks don’t make it a third try resulting from a Parra error and indeed Lachlan Vella earns the Eels a penalty in their next possession as he is held down in the ruck. Just as Parra threaten to open the Sharks up through the middle through an interchange of passes from the spine ala the prime Melbourne Storm, Fletcher loses the ball looking for one extra pass.

Johansson is dreadfully unlucky not to earn a whistle as he is held down next set and instead the ref finds a small error from Pakoti two plays later to again put the Sharks on the attack. Eels not doing a lot to help themselves in the first half here. They simply can not continue to feed so much bonus possession to Cronulla.

Good, driving from Petrus first play in defence. He backs it up next tackle for a double. Sharks now work left where they get the dropsies and turn it back over to the Eels.

Nice work from Rokauka and Pop to get the Eels knocking on the door here. Fletcher plays short to Beattie down the right and only outstanding defence can turn the flying backrower away. To the left on the last for Parra where Talataina loops around Johansson to keep play alive before kickign ahead for himself. Lester is on the spot to trap the ball though and he is brought down in the field of play before the Eels concede a pressure relieving penalty.

Now a sudden chance as Tom Summer makes a great slips catch in reaction to a Cronulla drop to put the Eels back on the attack. Probably should have escalated to a penalty for the slow down in the ruck but we play on. Johansson gets an early run down the left before Parra switch sides. Again we come to the left as Petrus is pulled down before Summer is barely stopped short near the posts. Fletcher’s kick on the last is played again and cleaned by the Eels but a few plays later a clear forward pass is pulled up and a golden chance to score is missed as the clocks runs out to zeroes in the first half.

Half Time

Cronulla Sharks 10 lead the Parramatta Eels 6

Second Half

Parra to field the ball in the second half as they run away from the Cabra Leagues Club.

Farrugia fields the kick and sorties infield. Summer and Petrus take the next two runs with the latter earning a penalty for ruck interference. Solid start to the half. Fletcher finds touch on halfway as Popo gets us back underway. Talataina takes a weaving dart next tackle before we go wide left to Petrus. Left again as the Eels spin it all the way to Rokasuka but we come back infield for a penalty. Looks like offside defenders.

Two passes right to Popo on the first tackle. Left to Summer near the posts before Fletcher takes the Eels right where Vella is met by a hammerblow tackle. It gets him under the ribs as he tries to pass and he is rocked. However the defenders are again offside so the Eels get the ball back.

Vella is rattled but eventually gets back to his feet as again Popo is the initial option from the set start. Left to Summer on tackle two but he drops it cold and a glut of possession yields nothing for the home team. Worse a penalty follows to let the Sharks pull the field position lever once again.

Well at least the Sharks oblige the Eels in turn with a loose drop of their own.

Oh my goodness. Good lord what was that? How? I am not sure I have the words. Lorenzo Talataina has perfectly executed a chip kick ON CRONULLA’S GOAL LINE for Pakoti who in kind has shown a spectacular set of hands to yoink the ball off his ankles and dive over. Outrageous stuff.

Try scored by Wesley Pakoti. Conversion successful by Lincoln Fletcher.

Eels lead 12-10

Fililava unleashes from the back fence on tackle one! Barnstorming run. Petrus delivers similar results as tthe Eels go left and they nearly open the Sharks up on the next down the short side but Johansson can’t find Rokasuka with the offload and the visitors dive on the loose ball. All happening now.

Howlett continues to plug away at the back with another useful kick return. Farrugia and Pakoti have their numbers called next before Beattie does well to spin through a strong tackle and fall forwards. Fletcher sends a towering bomb up on the last and a good kick chase from Farrugia traps the Sharks near their goal line. No penalties that call now for the Eels. A good defensive set gives them the edge and they cobble together a reasonable effort.

Rokasuka gets the kick return this time around as Johannson and Howlett follow. Fililava and Coinakis round out the run efforts before Fletcher again sends the ball downfield via a bomb.

A tense arm wrestle is unfolding now as the game finally settles into a rhythm. The set-for-set play is eventually broken up when Howlett is struck high diving on a grubber kick from the Sharks. Lucien gets the first run next set as Talataina uses Mark Williams next play. Play comes back to Lucien but the ref finds a loose carry as he hits the deck inside Cronulla’s half.

A chance comes to Cronulla after they drive Rokasuka in-goals on an attacking bomb. Not much Lorima could have done there to be fair – it was a strong kick chase. Eels kick long and the Sharks punch it up the guts in the opening tackles before shaping left only to turn it back to the ruck. Their five-eighth has a run that sets up a dart for their dummy-half but a penalty stops play. Initially I thought it was signalled for Parra but it is for the Sharks and their tap and go.

Nice work from Fletcher and Beattie down the right and Pakoti backs them up next play with a driving tackle but the Eels come unstuck when the Sharks head back to the posts. Their prop forward Alex Challenor is able to fight through contact and fall on the line for the go-ahead try.

Try scored by Alex Challenor. Conversion successful by Callum Grantham.

Sharks lead 16-12

57min gone

A penalty late in the count isn’t what the Eels needed but it happens none the less as the Sharks get a full set inside Parra’s half. Cronulla keep it pretty vanilla through the opportunity to press their advantage and end up getting penalised in possession as the crackdown on the PTB continues.

Ryda Talagi is back on and gets the opening charge as Popo steams onto the ball next play. Left next as Talataina goes outside-inside to Howlett but the defence are vigilant. Lucien centres the ball near the goal line before Fletcher runs it on the last. He uses Vella on the crash line but the defence meet him and the centre tries to keep the ball alive only for Cronulla to bat hit offload backwards and claim the pill.

Both teams are feeling the fatigue here but Cronulla are the ones finding more creases to attack and swing the flow their way when they bundle Dom Farrugia into touch 12m off Parra’s line. Dom was claiming the attacking kick there and probably had a chance to stick his foot on the sideline and make it out on the full.

Now the Sharks can seal this game if they score. The ball comes out early in the set and there is a moment of indecision as the Eels think it is an error but the ref rules a penalty. The call to take the shot at goal rings out loud and the Sharks will look to make it a 6-point lead. Grantham slots it and the Sharks go up a converted try.

Penalty conversion successful by Callum Grantham.

Sharks lead 18-12

66min gone

Some drama here after the Sharks appear to drop the ball but the referee rules it backwards. It allows them to get to their kick. Parra need a circuit breaker play and it comes from Fletcher and Farrugia as the winger pours on the pressure in a kickchase for a bomb that forces an error on the Cronulla goal line. With minutes left to play the Eels get a chance to try and salvage a draw here – do they have the right play loaded up?

Centrefield scrum right infront of the posts. Split alignment for the Eels as Talataina and Howlett give them option either side of the ruck. Parra go left as Fletcher digs in and throw a loopy pass to Lorima Rokasuka who is left with a truckload of work to do. Someway, somehow he gets it all done with an unbelievable dive for the line through heavy contact. If that wasn’t enough he plants it down in an effort that would make Xavier Coates proud to give the Eels a chance at stealing a point on the ladder. Ridiculous effort!

The kick comes from the left sideline for Fletcher. Tough, tough chance. He steps in and just drags it left of the posts. Damn. Not far off. Barely time left here for a final crack.

Try scored by Lorima Rokasuka. Conversion unsuccessful by Lincoln Fletcher.

Eels trail 16-18

68min gone

Petrus steams in from the kickoff. Popo next before the Eels go left where Johansson again bursts into the backfield! He hasn’t got the support arriving in time so he takes the tackle himself and it allows the Eels to go right where crisp work from Talataina unleashes Dom Farrugia for the match winner! Redemption from last week! A stunning fight back from the Eels! Fletcher drills the conversion for a minor points differential boost and just a handful of plays left for Parra to survive.

Try scored by Dominic Farrugia. Conversion successful by Lincoln Fletcher.

Eels lead 22-18

Howlett safely secures the short kickoff and the Eels hold onto the ball to secure an outrageous come-from-behind win! Tempers flare up at the end, nothing unusual there in an emotionally charged finish but what a win for the Blue & Gold as they roar home for a massive win!

No idea Sb. Usually Occam’s Razor applies to late changes with niggles or injuries the most likely factor.

  1. EA

No discipline in HM side. They have defended well which is good.

But bombed tries. Miracle plays on the first tackle. Errors etc. they are barely learning from their previous weeks lol. Would be a great side if they fixed some of the stupid stuff

  2. Anonymous

Man o man that was tough to watch . I’m sorry but this coach is killing this talent. Brig back chris Hutchinson. With lesser known players he got the best out of them . Simple turnovers killed us .

Josh hodgson game plan drop ball and penalties as soon as he came to parra looks like he continues the trend.

    1. Sb

Have to agree with you. Looks like a poorly coached side. With the talent in this HM side they should be doing a lot better

Anonymous, I deleted your reply last week when you got a bit personal in your comments about Hodgson. You haven’t crossed a line this time but I’m advising you to take care with highly negative generalisations.

  3. B&G 4 Eva

Think there’s a dilemma here, Hodgson has a talented team and they are playing dumb. Killed in the penalty count for the 3rd week running and doesn’t seem to be attention paid to ball control.

That game may well see the team miss out on playing finals, very disappointing and guess there has to be questions asked after 3 very ordinary performances. If not, there should be.
