The Tip Sheet – 2024 Ep 108: The Reign Officially Ends

The Tip Sheet is also available on Spotify and iTunes!

Just like that Clint Gutherson is no longer an Eel and is now a Dragon. The Tip Sheet signs off on Gutho’s stellar career at the club as Sixties and Forty20 celebrate his legacy as an Eel. The show then delves into the latest developments on Josh Addo-Carr and Jayden Brailey for the club.

AJ Brimson landed himself momentarily in a spot of bother on Melbourne Cup Day but successfuly employed the Shane Warne defence. The reasons why Terrell May is no longer a Rooster take another twist while Exra Mam is in the hole for nearly half a million dollars after his car crash. It is a lot to sift through but the biggest news this week is the Knights Group officially backing the bid for the Christchurch Orcas.

Finally, the boys continue their coverage of the Pacific Champions as we reach the finals batch of games. Tonga are preparing to upset the Kangaroos in the men’s final while the Jillaroos are looking to wrap up a dominant international campaign in their rematch with the Kiwi Ferns. Alongside both these games are the crossover matches between New Zealand and PNG for the men and Samoa and PNG for the women.

Picking the Eels to win the game on Sunday is kind of a no s—t Sherlock moment.

However further I will call Mitch as MOM. The reason I say that is he had not played football since SOO III prior to the Kangaroos game 1. Furthermore he had the distraction of a new born baby.

When the rest of his teammates went across to NZ for the second game he stayed back to be with his family. For game 3 though he has some football in his legs and a full training session with his Kangaroos teammates at Magenta Shores this week and I believe he will be in for a big game.

    1. Sixties

Hey John, I assume you meant picking Australia to win. It was quite the game and the streets along Parra were coloured red.

Eels allegedly interested in Paul Vaughan – really?

Is this guy going to be paying us at parramatta to play for the club?

It’s understood his form has been decent at SL. The super league is miles below in regards to intensity, speed, less heat, and lower quality of rugby league opponents.

It doesn’t make much sense unless I’m missing something.

Isn’t he around 32-34 now? He was kinda avg form at bulldogs too from memory. 😅

    1. Sixties

Muz, when people started messaging me I was laughing. The rumour mill was sending another misguided rocket out there.

If dyl brown wants to take his game to next level he needs to watch Tom deaeden’s game for aus this arvo. Brown is the better player but needs the aggressive attitude of dearden.

    1. John Eel

Ron I was travelling and didn’t see the game. I listened to the call and Mitch didn’t seem to get a lot of possession.

Harry Grant seemed to be favouring Dearden. Is this right or am I letting my loyalty to Mitch impair my judgement.

      1. Ron

Moses certainly took a backseat as dearden + turbo went hunting for the ball. Moses was good in defence for the most part and didn’t overplay his hand which I think is important in a test match with other stars. But I would have liked him to be more aggressive. Sometimes felt like he was too predictable on sweeping plays.

Grants service from dummy hand is pretty terrible. He’s a great player you can tell he’s very used to melb players just supporting him as he conducts the show. Not used to deferring to halves when there is a quick play the ball.

Aussie starting props was dominated by Tongan starting props but when those starters were interchanged tonga fell away. Tonga need to chuck latu final in at half and find hooker for next year. They have so many good pieces but their attack was putrid. Anyway, good on both teams for an entertaining match.

Yes Ron, I thought Dearden had a strong game, he digs into the line with energy and makes things happen. Moses played safely with composure, and for the second time had that beast HO running at him all game but he never faltered. One thing I did like, Lomax chasing down Moses’ kicks.

          1. Muz

Moses still seems a bit rusty or playing a bit careful so he doesn’t get injured I thought.

As I Selfish parramatta fan, I approve of him not running the ball a lot, taking minimal risks, and not sustaining and injuries before our mighty parramatta eels off season. 🤞

      2. Sixties

John, this might seem an unpopular opinion but I don’t rate Harry as a team dummy half. He’s an individual, a brilliant one, and in the podcast recently I suggested that the Canetoads were paying the price for his ordinary service.

        1. Muz

Sixties when you mentioned that on the podcast I could not help but agree. His service & ball hogging isn’t suited for when a team has got elite 6-7’s who both have elite running game. I would be interested to see how QLD looks with Reed Mahoney playing at 9.

      3. Muz

Dearden is fast becoming an elite 6, him at parramatta would be unbelievable. No offence to Dylan, Dearden is both a team leader plus ultra consistent. He never goes in and out of matches or form. Love our dyl bags but Dearden is like a Clint gutherson in the halves in terms of sheer determination and consistency. Very good player.

        1. Ron

Dyl is better though – dearden has a good dummy and short ball but his kicking and long passing are quite limited. Dyl just needs to attack the game the way dearden does instead of letting Moses overcall him or otherwise ceding responsibility. I think it’ll happen with dyl next year as knows gutho has left so he has to step up.

Dyl is a beast – just want to see that aggressiveness/arrogance that elite players develop when they know they can change games and go after it

          1. Hamsammich

Yeah. Statistically Dyl was better than Dearden in 2024 and was the best “five-eighth” in the competition. Could Dyl do more? Potentially, but I don’t think people give him enough credit for what he’s already doing. With a smaller, hopefully higher work-rate pack we’ll see more players in motion around him.
