The Tip Sheet – 2024 Ep 26: Round 4 Post Game Show Feat. Eric Grothe Senior

The Tip Sheet is also available on Spotify and iTunes!

The Tip Sheet was live from the Bistro following Parramatta’s Round 4 loss to the Wests Tigers on Easter Monday. Sixties and Forty20 were joined by a genuine legend of the club in Eric Grothe Senior.

The Guru discusses his debut in 1979 and the legendary conversion her made as a Kangaroo before sharing stories about his connection with Steve Ella and some of the best tries he scored as an Eel. Sixties raises the Immortal question once more and Eric delivers an emphatic response that there are multiple Immortal-tier players from the 1981-86 dynasty.

Which current Eel runs like the Guru? The boys discuss Eric’s unique and powerful running style and whether it was taught or something he grasped intuitively. The chat closes out with a look at the upcoming gigs for his band Eric and the Gurus and quick breakdown of the game against the Tigers.

Yesterday’s loss was all on Brad Arthur. There was absolutely no reason to change what was working. Paulo has been immense from the bench as has Matterson. Yet BA changes it. Paulo starting went back to his 120kg halfback plays which involved stupid passes and sideways running. Hopgood is also no bench player. Matterson is possibly the best bench player in the game yet we elect to start him. Defies logic.

Also when are we going to address the elephant in the room with Sivo? He is easily the most overrated and laziest winger in the game. Time to offer him to another club and buy a winger with some mongrel. I see Turuva is still available.

Agree about the bench. Paulo is no longer a starter. He’s proven that time and time again now. Origin he failed badly as run on prop.

Matto is interchange specialist. He’s not a starter.

Dylan is not 7! We had two number 6’s on the field. He’s shown he cannot step up when needed.

We let Galvin go? Recruitment failed again!! We have a litany of failures in recruitment; Olam not good enough for us apparently?

I blame recruitment as it has engineered the situation we find ourselves in.

    The other point of contrast.
Panthers had Cleary out and brought in Schneider. They beat Roosters. Kevin Walters praised Panthers attitude in that game and credted that with how he approached the Cowboys game.

yesterday was another reminder of the year on year negligence of recruitment and retention committee (under MON) but the silver lining is BA and the club should have a good idea (if they somehow don’t already) of just who is the dead wood and who they want to keep for the future in this 8 week block without Moses. Some players will delight us and rise to the challenge. Others, will unfortunately wilt without Moses there to tell them what to do and make them look better than they are. It’s over to the players to answer those questions (provided ba exhibits some semblance of competency in his bench usage)

And, off the back of this 8 week block, hopefully the club can make some proactive decisions about this roster and its address it’s deficiencies instead of the usual spin it trots out when linked to players to band aid the gaping holes in the team. Big ask, I know, but maybe, just maybe.

Hi guys, I love your content and the passion and pride that you put into it. I particularly enjoy your post match reactions, I’m so invested in the games and your show helps me process the result, good or bad, but I feel like I’m missing out on this when you run your Parra Leagues reactions. I understand the dynamics of working with the live crowd, but to me, it’s like I don’t get to hear what you really feel, especially on a game like yesterday’s.

Please don’t take this the wrong way, you’re both brilliant and I share your love of this beautiful yet painfully frustrating club. I chose to spend way too much money yesterday and spend my 50th birthday in the Field Club, it was an amazing experience that wasn’t ruined by the result…in a weird way it just solidified my love for the club.

    Carn Parra!
