The 2022 NRL preseason it just about ready to begin and the boys have convened fittingly for the Pre-Preseason Supershow! There is plenty of news, rumours and happenings to discuss so Sixties and Forty20 get right on it in a gargantuan episode of The Tip Sheet.

Starting with a bang with the massive news that Reagan Campbell-Gillard will be an Eel until the end of 2025, the boys walk through the almost shock retention. From there they talk Curtis Scott, Maddie Studdon, several rumoured and confirmed coaching appointments, a major sponsor re-upping and a swathe of recruitment and retention rumours.

The NRL and NRLW draws have finally been released. What do they mean for the Eels? The boys break down what looks to be another tough run for the Blue & Gold and how it can shape both their NRL and NRLW premiership pushes.

The second half of this beast features the return of Joey Grima who walks The Tip Sheet through the changes and growth in Parramatta’s elite junior pathways for the 2022 seasons. Joey provides rare insight into testing and medial protocols and then guides the boys through the upcoming preseasons for the junior pathways and NRLW.

Love the podcast. It is interesting the appointment of Simon Woolford. Given his CV as both a player and as a coach it would seem almost a low ball position for him to accept.

It would seem from the outside looking in there would be more to it than merely Jersey Flegg coach. Could it be as one commentator has suggested an element of Talent Scout to the appointment or just a way to get him to the club with an eye to the future.

Not hard to see why Joey Grima is in charge of junior pathways. He is right across his subject matter and a very good communicator.

It will be interesting to watch over the coming years how many NRL players are produced from the pathways system. Not just for the Eels, because we will not be able to keep them all, but also the ones poached by other clubs.

We need to keep an eye on Manly!

Cheers John. I reckon that the role for Woolford will be more expansive as you suspect.
Joey is a champion bloke, a passionate Parra man and is terrific in his role. You’ll meet fewer people with his positivity, yet he’s not afraid to enforce standards.
I’ve been fortunate to stand alongside Joey at times during pathways and lower grades matches and it’s remarkable to hear him predict the play that is about to unfold – and I’m not just talking about Parra. I’m including opposition teams. It is quite an education.
Building and improving Parra’s pathways is so important to him. We will see some outstanding outcomes over the coming years.

We recorded the first part of this podcast before the news about Marata broke. We were finishing our chat with Joey as the news was filtering through.
I won’t be saying farewell to Marata as yet because there is still a job to do in 2022.
He remains an Eel until the end of next year and I reckon he’ll be aiming for a big season.

    Really great podcast guys.
All the signing news. Sad about Marata… but good on him…we can’t match that price. Im hopefull we can resign Ice with the money from Marata and Keegan.
Curtis Scott a premiership winner. He is a good depth signing…if he can keep on the straight and narrow.
I can understand what Sam Ayoub is trying to do..but the way he does business doesn’t impress me. He seems to use all his players as peices. I.e. If you won’t come to the party with one…I’ll take the other to dinner with the Gus and lay it on thick. Gives the impression that we could lose both players and then his mates in the media pile on the pressure. Having said all that I’m happy with how the club is handling his tactics.
All good refresh to the coaching department. Mary will be great. Ennis has a good footy brain.
Can’t wait for the NRLW to start great signings Dean Widders and Maddie.
A big thanks to Joey Grima for the great work and passion he has for the Eels.
    Thanks again.

pete I like your thoughts on Ayoub. He did not achieve much when he negotiated Gutho’s deal last time other than get many of the Eels fans offside.

It must be remembered that according to Gus, Reed has not been given a formal offer at this point. That is important because the figures that Ayoub put out to the media this week is Monopoly money.

I am still confident we can keep Reed and Papali’i. I think we will lose one more.

Thanks Pete. The NRL on Nine media report painted the Eels as putting a deadline on the negotiations with three players then spectacularly backing down. In fact, it was all relating to the one manager – Ayoub.
i’m happy that the club stands firm in dealing with him.

Gutted about Marata, I think he’s about to really hit his straps, we have nurtured him brilliantly, but…anyway, move on. Maybe we are where Penrith was last year with Matt Burton, the guy can play but they couldn’t fit everyone in (both cap and starting 13). They still did the victory lap.

I’ve learnt to accept the changes that are coming. If players all want a bit more, something (or multiple someones) have to give.
