Stat Attack – Season 2016

Now that the season is done and dusted, it’s time to have a look how the Eels fared in 2016. In the following post I will run through the key statistics for every player and team as a whole. We can see how we fared against the whole competition and examine, if we kept those 12 points, whether we were going to be a real title contender.

Parramatta Eels

Players Used

28 (lowest was Sharks with 24, highest was Knights with 35)

Firstly, I will examine the differences from before and after our loss of competition points and the loss of points differential for the first 9 rounds.

Lets have a look at the vital stats from 2016 – attack, defence and discipline. All these numbers do paint the picture of our 2016 season.

So all in all we did handle ourselves fairly well against opposition teams all season. Some stats surprised but others like penalties didn’t. Something that Brad Arthur will no doubt be looking at over the summer is discipline. Line breaks will also need to be looked at as well.  We all know we can march up the field quite effectively but our Red Zone attack needs improving. Of course having makeshift halves and various half combinations throughout the year didn’t help. With the shift of Bevan French to fullback, the need to recruit a good finisher is vital.

The tables below highlight the individual stats for each player who donned the blue and gold this year. It provides an interesting tool for examining the performances of the playing squad.

When all was said and done, the statistics are indicative of a team which would rightly have finished in the bottom half of the top eight. Whether Norman would have been given a longer suspension if Parramatta could have qualified for the finals is debatable. Certainly the Eels would have needed a firing Corey Norman to make a genuine impact in the finals.

I trust that you have enjoyed looking through the year that was stats wise. Hopefully all of the weekly game stats have given you a better look on what happened in match and an insight into where it was won and lost.

I have enjoyed bringing these to you and very much look forward to continuing my Stat Attack posts in 2017 – the Year of the Eels.

Thanks for the listing, makes for very interesting reading. Especially the work load and rate by some of the players. I am especially impressed with the stats that come out for Daniel Alvaro, for a player basically in his first real year in the top squad they are pretty good and I think can only get better as he grows in maturity and no doubt strength. Out of them all for 17 games and only 1 error is top stuff, I guess the number of missed tackles does not help but he wasn’t the top in that department though.

  2. Mitchy

Superb stats Colmac. I could read these all day.
I know some hassle Jenko, (not on TCT) but his stats are good. Tackle breaks, and one on ones and yes we expect it, but i rate him, and Gutho as Sixties mentioned is superb.
Also Terepo, who i also rate. His stats are v good. 9 missed. Yes he can have bad hands, but he’s improved and runs v hard. Wish he had a few kg….
Great read Colmac, and thank you.

Got it in 2 mitchy ,jenko best defensive centre in comp and bazza (peni) most improved in team , incidentally people doubting jenkos attack need to realise the amout of halves combinations hes played of this season , 2017 new ball game !

      1. Mitchy

Spot on Grumpy. Jenko when he does receive clean and early ball goes well. Penrith game in first half, i am sure he dod well with early ball. I yearn for the day Grumpy we see him in the clear…with or without Semi.

  3. Trapped in the 1970's

Thanks for posting Col as it makes for some interesting reading.

What about Peni…..over 500 tackles and only 9 missed, quite a prolonged period of excellence!

    1. Phil Mann

Peni’s stats are excellent, Pity all those who want to malign him won’t bother to read this information thoroughly.
1.74% missed tackles. Next best O’Brien at 3.2%. Forwards 5.59% Team average 6.96%.
Discipline (errors+penalties) Peni averaged 1 per game, Forwards 0.86/game. Team average1.04 errors per game
Run Metres, all 11 forwards between 9.68m per run (Mannah) and 8.15m (Moeroa), Peni an acceptable 8.58.

Clinton Gutherson is being hammered on the other site as a potential 5/8 for 2017. Next year we will likely have a 5/8 who is the top one on one tackler in the club, who does that as a half. This backed up by the rest of the stats he has produced and I can’t wait to see what he does next year playing with Corey Norman.

In the last game against the Warriors, the Eels forced 7 drop outs. When you consider we forced 41 for the season or 1.67 per game that was a great effort. I do not how many of the seven were by Gutherson but I would say most.

    1. Hamsammich

Exactly with the defence. We just need a half that can most importantly defend but also stick to the game plan. From all reports Gutho is an extremely hard worker and level headed. I truly believe that he will be one of our halves and get us into the top 6.

Also top work once again guys. Love the read as always.

    2. Grumpy

Contrary to some of the silliness on another site my info re fogarty is that the coaching staff liked what they saw ,a composed organiser who can kick well in thefield and goals as well ,dont write this kid off ,they think he has potential , put him behind a go forward pack with good organised players around him and it changes for everyone !

      1. Colin Hussey

Grumpy, you have been reading my comments re Fogarty.

As for his game on Sunday, I would ask who was the bears best player? sadly they were beaten by a more experienced and bigger pack, the cutters had several players with NRL experience and from this year as well. Even when he missed in a tackle he came back quick to at worst assist in the tackle. There’s more to work with with him than many are prepared to admit.

        1. John Eel

Col I agree with you, BA obviously see’s something in Fogarty’s game and more tham his kicking game otherwise he would not have recruited him. That is why he has a 2 year contract. From here it is up to him to put in and and improve his game to put him in contention for the NRL.

The big question that I have about his game after watching him play three times is that I have no recollection of him running the ball. All the best halves have the ability to run the ball and play at the line. This is something that he will have to learn.

          1. Colin Hussey

            John

I am finding the player build up quite interesting, there has been a few signings, and re-signings but there is still 14 odd players shown as off contract and no news on them, I guess they are still officially part of the eels 2016 team until end of this month when the new year kicks in.

There are the rumours re Hunt being targeted by the eels, but I am wondering a bit more after some posts on 1eeyed as to who will come and who is coming, still very early days though and no doubt more to come, with perhaps not a lot of news until Bernie Gurr actually takes up his position and then the news comes out.

Having only seen Fogarty’s game on Sunday, I thought what he did was ok, he didn’t stretch himself, he missed a few tackles, but he also came back and came in as an assist in them but he also did some very good defensive work as well. Some of his kicks were good also, and yes you are right he did not do a lot of running. His plays seemed more to do with support players in trying to set them up, but also he seemed to do a bit at dummy half as well.

The 2 year contract tends to tell me that BA sees something in his game that is a likely fit in with his plans. Next year we see the start of the next set with BA in charge and with 3 years in charge. Much or many of the players from his first 3 years are now gone or likely to be gone by the end of this year, with the greater proportion of players each signing on under his watch, some of course will also be off contract end of 2017, so they will definately be playing for new contracts next year.

Fogarty has played hooker so I heard, some have suggested he may be the 1 at Wenty, but I actually wonder if he may be used in the 9 position and interchange with Cameron King to see who provides the better back up options for the 9.
            Just thinking out loud.

          2. John Eel

You are right about him slipping into 9. He has done that in all of the 3 games that I have seen. Do you have any feeling for players who may come and go. There is plenty of talk about Hunt, it could be true. I don’t really have a feeling one way or the other about him coming.

I know that it is not a popular view but I like Guth at 6. I like his defence, I like the way that he takes the line on and this season he averaged over 100 metres a game running the ball. He was third best at the Eels for line breaks and up there with the best for tackle breaks.

It is going to be an interesting off season.

          3. Colin Hussey

John, I think I am weird, and likely many on this and 1eeyed would agree with that, at least. I would like to see the full roster we have at the moment that will be with the team for 2017, that includes top 25 and 2nd tier players before making too high an opinion.

Ham and sixties I think have given a pretty good review of potential players from the 2 jnr teams with players who should do ok in making a step up to their respective next levels, thing I would like to see is a similar item with the ISP players, Zero Tackle has 14 eels players future to be decided while Fox has only 7, Zero has Faraimo still on the list but he’s going to Souths.. Out of those 7 or 13 who would stay and then be built on with potential in ISP or 2nd tier?

While I am 50/50 on Hunt, I would prefer to see how Norman and Gutho go in the 6 and 7 role for 2017, even swap around between attack and defence on either side, saw that played out with DCE and Foran at Manly and it worked. That leaves a fairly easy call for the 1-5 spots. Fogarty could come in the mix at 9 if Pritchard doesn’t seal the spot, as much as BA is loyal to IDG and he gives his all, not too sure I would like him as the first choice 9 for the season, and that is likely going to be the sink hole spot in the team as I see the current roster.

          4. John Eel

Good reply Colin. At least you can have an opinion here on TCT and not be torn to shreads because of it. I like this site.

          5. Anonymous

It’s only the first year of this site but its very different to other fan sites I’ve seen on the net. There’s room for fan forums like 1eyedeel which I also read, but it’s important to be able to respond to topics that are just footy.

  5. Hamsammich

“like penalties didn’t. Something that Brad Arthur will no doubt be looking at over the summer is discipline”.

I think in the modern game with modern refereeing techniques I don’t think you can focus too much on reducing penalties. No matter which game it is the ref will be pretty much guaranteed to square up the penalty count throughout the match. I think the thing you have to work on is when you should give away penalties.

  6. Colin Hussey

Its very interesting reading everyone’s thoughts on the stats, and they show up a lot. When I read the ones on Gutho I was as astounded by them as much as I was with Alvaro, the difference in them shows the positional play of the both of them, Alvaro in the pig pen doing the hard yard work, and Gutho on more the outside, or so one would think.

There has been many saying that if we go into 2017 with him at 6 we have no hope, we need an organising half etc. But, I have actually wondered how he would actually go in the 7 spot rather than 6. Reason in saying it is that I think Norman is probably better at 6 as he was previous to Forans exit, and in 2015 when he worked well on the left side. Today’s 6 & 7 seem to be very much players that can shift to either position as needed, which has me thinking that such a work around may be something worth pursuing if no recognised half is signed, at least worth a shot in the trials.

The stats also show up the value of Terepo, who I have not been a great fan of, but when one sits down and looks at the details and stats, he has shown is worth off the bench, just needs to have surgery on his hands though.

  7. Pou

    Excellent post Colmac. Cheers mate.

A sneaky standout was Peni Terepo with 9 missed tackles in 23 games. He might be the only player in the NRL who conceded more penalties (10) than tackles missed. Also unsurprisingly topped our middle forwards for handling errors, with 13.

    1. Grumpy

Someone i know whos in the know told me that peni terepo is the player that all the oppositions hate to tackle, they reckon you always come out of it worse than bazza !!

  8. Joe Briffa

As the other comments thanks Col great read. That was outstanding by a few of the players but the read on young Danny Alvaro is quite simply mind blowing in the position he plays and to only make one error good on you Dan. As some of the contributers opn this site will tell you I have had a very high opinion of him since he played for the ponies. Thanks again Col.

  9. 1Day

Great snapshot of the season, nothing like some facts to inform one’s opinion. A few things that catch my eye; what a success BA’s efforts to reduce the penalty count were (a real achilles heel for years), how good is Manu’s attack (2700m off a relatively low possessions count 373 and 34 offloads), Alvaro had stepped up this season (in attack and defence he is right up there for games played), try assists no surprise that Norman is streets ahead but Gutherson/Taka contribute, whilst Moeroa is doing a huge amount of defence with IDG it would be great to see him develop his attacking skills.

  10. Glenn

    Thanks for the stats Colmac.
I’m positive Ma’u scored more than 2 trys, I certainly remember him scoring 2 trys in one game and positive he scored in a few other games as well.
One telling stat left out was the average metres covered for each run (yes we can calculate from figures provided), particularly relevant for the forwards to see how big an impact they make.
Now if we leave IDG out of games (missed tackles) along with Wicks (penalties conceded) our negative stats will improve markedly. Lol

    1. Colmac

Hey Glenn, no Manu only scored 2 tries. He crossed a few times but were disallowed.

Trust me if we get scorers wrong we wouldnt have a job.
