Join TCT at 3:00PM for the live coverage of the Round 14 clash between the Newtown Jets (aligned with the Cronulla Sharks) and the Wentworthville Magpies.

Please note that updates will be in a more limited format this week due to some technical difficulties (which is to say, a dead laptop!).

John Folau and Tui Oloapu drop out of the extended line up while Jake Butler-Fleming comes into the starting team in the centres.

First Half

Wenty are kicking off in the first half, running towards the hill for those that are familiar with Henson Park.

Doolan finds the carpet in goals but the Jets scoop it up on the bounce and get out safely. The Magpies then prove to be too eager off the mark and are pinged for jumping early.

Newtown take the ball down their left early in the following set and get on the board in rapid fashion as they touch down in the corner with Wenty sleeping on a late offload on the goal line.

Wenty rally defensively in the next set to force the Jets to kick from their own 40m mark but an astute touch in the kick finds touch in between Schutle and Tuha.

Ualesi has a good first carry. Twal then takes Wenty to the halfway mark. Dargan looks to kick in behind the Jets but his flat stab has too much power and just rolls dead. Took an unlucky break away from the sideline there.

The Jets go back to working the ball down their left, seemingly the game plan at this stage but Wenty hold out and get the ball back in their red zone. A tough offensive set follows as the Jets pin the Magpies deep in their half. Dargan tries to hoof it downtown but it is easily marked by the back three of the home team…fortunately the pressure is eased by a Newtown error!

Time off now as a Wenty player is down. Tuha the man, but he looks to be alright now. Nice sweeping play from Dargan and Tuha a couple of tackles later but the Jets slide in good shape and take away Tuha’s options. Dargan looks to roll it in goals on the last but there is a Newtown friendly deflection.

Newtown complete a strong set in return, marching up past halfway for their kick. Again the going is tough for Wenty but a strong carry late in the set but Ualesi goes some way towards getting Wenty in position for a kick. Alas a penalty quickly follows as Wenty are nailed for jumping the gun defensively again and just like before, points quickly follow the penalty. The Jets strike once more down the right edge of the Magpies. Looked like a case of simple hands with Wenty getting caught short.

Try scored by the Newtown Jets. Conversion unsuccessful.

Wenty get the better of the next exchanges as Ualesi and Gorman make some good inroads up the middle. An attacking bomb follows but Schulte grasses it. Newtown follow the same blueprint in return, right down to the stacking knock on from the bomb!

Ualesi continues his strong start to the game with another bullish carry. Wenty work the ball into the Newtown red zone where Dargan looks to grubber to the left corner. The Newtown winger plays at it but apparently has a clean miss at it with his legs and hands as it rolls dead and comes back for a 20m restart.

The Jets get yet another penalty coming out of their half and go immediately back into the attack but lose he ball attacking the left edge of the visitors. Wenty finally get a couple of penalties of their own in return and get a full set to work with in the Newtown red zone but following a nice inside line from Toutai off Dargan, Doolan drops the ball from a bad dummy half pass.

Urgh. Newtown cross for the third time today following that mistake. Just rucked it up the middle and then kept the ball alive on the last tackle. Once again we are short down our right edge, looks to be a massive disconnect between Schulte/Butler-Fleming and their interior defenders.

Outstanding kick from the right half of the Jets there. Finds touch in a dime with barely any room to work in. Puts a great finish on a rare ordinary set from the home team.

Unlucky penalty against the Jets in the subsequent set. Dargan slips into a tackle and cops a high shot. Newtown hold out the raid from the penalty restart as the Magpies lose the pill trying to fire a shot down their left edge.

Tom Amone has a nice carry a couple of sets later. Got a bit wide down the left edge and steamed into the edge defenders. The Magpies look to capitalise on the momentum with a nice kick by Dargan but are penalised for a second effort as they try to force the Newtown fullback in goals.

Butter soft defence follows as the Jets make a huge incision up the middle. Wenty scramble to bring down the runner but a penalty for slowing the ruck down comes two tackles later. Newtown want the tap restart and who can blame them? With the most minimal of effort they embarrass our right edge for the third time today. I mean it was obviously a set piece but it was as basic a shift as you will find and we were shockingly unprepared for it as the cutout pass sails past Schulte to Travis Robinson.

Try scored by the Newtown Jets. Conversion successful.

Newtown lead 20-0

Shut the gates now. Newtown score in the shadow of half time as their right edge backrower Kurt Capewell spins through some decidedly inept defence to score out wide. Newtown aren’t doing anything particularly special today, just playing some solid footy while our boys struggle to keep up with their pace.

Second Half

Well, that was an awful end to an otherwise promising opening set. After rumbling into the Jets’ half for an attacking kick in the last, we manage to boot it out on the full. That wasn’t Dargan or Doolan there, missed the kicker beyond that.

The Jets waste little time in attempting to continue the carve up from the first half with a clean break up the middle from their custodian. The try is bombed though as his connecting pass to support is grassed with the try line in front of them.

Newtown get the first penalty of the half and despite an awful attempted touch finder from centre field that earns zero net metres, the Jets manage to still romp in a try. This one comes late in the set and to the surprise of no one in attendance it is our right edge that concedes the first points of the half. Jordan Drew dives past Butler-Fleming from essentially a standing start there.

Some clowny stuff from the kickoff as Wenty go short, though I’m not sure it was intentional given the stiff breeze they were kicking into. Both teams are a bit sluggish to react to it. Wenty end up losing it backwards where it is scooped up into a line break for the Jets only for them to drop the ball cold on a connecting pass again. Crazy run of play.

Play eventually comes back to our red zone, as it has for much of the game. This time around the Magpies do hold out…only to be trapped in goals for a line drop out.

The Jets have little issue crossing down our right edge from the following set as Travis Robinson notches up his third try for the game. There was actually some slick passing from the Jets in the lead up to this particular try, huge solace that it is.

Another short kickoff from the Magpies. This one looked intentional and it forces an error from the Jets in the recovery attempt. The visitors now get a good crack at the goal line of the Jets.

Bureta Faraimo goes desperately close in a pretty inspired effort and he steps and spins his way back to the posts before he is dragged down. Dargan’s bomb on the last is dropped by Newtown but Wenty can’t produce anything from the repeat set as they get bogged down on their left edge before giving away a penalty for an offside chaser in a grubber kick.

A rare penalty for the Magpies as Faraimo fights for a fast play the ball. Twal takes the first hit up and gets jammed. Amone follows and looks to ball play to a fellow big man but the ball is dropped.

A little bit of individual magic from Nu Brown gets the Jets their next points. He grubbers in behind for himself and races through to snatch the ball out of the hands of Hontei Tuha and score.

Try scored by the Newtown Jets. Conversion successful.

Newtown lead 42-0

And on that note I am exercising a very rare option for myself, which is tapping out. Newtown have eviserated our boys today and there is still another game to cover tomorrow.

Even as I type my outro the Jets score again.

The sooner that the Eels dip out of the joint venture with Wenty, the better. It’s not a reflection of Wenty, but rather the NSW cup rarely playing in any visible link to the NRL team. This team seems totally devoid of any pride and are turning up their toes at the slightest adversity.

Not an unreasonable sentiment mate. Instead of playing out of Parra and having a strong connection to the first grade team they are playing out of parks on a schedule that often deviates heavily from the NRL draw. Even though the players are only one step from first grade there seems to be a massive disconnect for players trying to make the jump.

Final score 54-6. Really soft defence from Wenty right from the start. Jets were consistent but no intensity to Wenty in defence and attack. In the first half 4 out of 5 tries down the right hand side. Second half was similar. Very hard to find too many positives.

Spot on 1Day. I mentioned it in the live blog but the Jets weren’t anything special today. They just played good, solid footy and we simply could not go with them. They were scoring so easily down our right edge that is was difficult to pinpoint the exact issue but Butler-Fleming and Schulte were pretty ordinary defensively even when tasked with one-on-one match ups.

Forty, yet again mate, your dedication to the giving us these live updates and the blow by blow is brilliant.

I can only imagine that today must have been hard going to watch, so my admiration is only deepened.

Thanks mate for EVERYTHING you do for us all.
