After The Nines – BA’s Thoughts (And Mine)

After listening to the Brad Arthur interview on Triple M’s Rush Hour (click here for Podcast), a number of features of the Eels Football Department became clearer.

  1. Camaraderie

BA was very entertaining in his description of Corey Norman – “it’s a good thing he can play because he’s hard work”. I’ve seen Corey bring out a laugh from Arthur in the past, quite a feat! It’s obvious that these blokes have an excellent rapport/working relationship. As fans we had the opportunity to get an insight into their relationship with this interview.

How sweet it is!

I’m grateful to the official Eels video of the sideline reaction to the full-time whistle in the final. To witness the players and BA celebrate with each other is a sight rarely witnessed by Eels fans in recent times. Evidently the players didn’t miss the opportunity to drench the coach in the customary way that victories are marked. Any competition win needs to be enjoyed. The players celebrate successes at training, no doubt the Nines victory would instil the desire to chase the feeling again. A great feeling leading into the season proper.

2. Vindication For A Tough Pre-Season

In his interview, Arthur acknowledged that all teams endure a tough preparation over the summer months. Nonetheless, the performance in the tournament vindicated their focus on improved defence and performing under pressure. The team trains hard at making defensive decisions, on goal line defence and showing greater resilience. It was only the Nines, but we saw evidence of this in action.

For the Eels fans who have attended training or read our training reports, much of what we have witnessed in drills and match simulations was on show in the coverage. It added to the enjoyment of the win. Furthermore, many of the lower profile players mentioned in our reports as excelling at training were rewarded with a Nines jersey (King, Nelson, Cornish, Tanginoa, French). This was a smart move by BA and will now create added competition for NRL positions.

Cody Nelson - dedication and hard work deserved a reward.

3. Where To For Bevan French

Two things were highlighted by Arthur.

Firstly, French has dedicated 5 or 6 gym sessions a week, every week, to build up his frame for the rigours of senior football.

Secondly, in likening French to Alvaro, BA stipulated that French wouldn’t be rushed. We would ensure that when the time comes, French will be ready and this will add to the competition for places in the team. He is seen as a major talent and part of our future.

Bevan French - a rare talent that will be nurtured.

4. Kieren Foran’s Fitness

TCT has reported the varied training undertaken by Foran. Arthur emphasised that Foran’s work has focussed on building up his strength and ensuring a better management of any niggling issues. The Eels intend to make Foran fitter and stronger than he has ever been. In the past he has played when he shouldn’t have. His treatment and rehab could have been better.

I could be wrong, but I would be surprised to see Foran play in any trials. I’ve watched him in action in simulated matches and he has slotted in beautifully in the Eels attack. He brings an extra dimension to what Parramatta can produce in attack. I don’t think that we need to expose him to the trials. We know what he will add. Good times ahead.

5. Final Reflection

Let’s gloat for a few days over the win, feel proud to declare and wear our colours (not that TCT would ever do otherwise), then move forward.

The Auckland Nines was a different form of football that gave a glimpse at what Brad Arthur is trying to develop. You don’t win a premiership from the Nines, but wasn’t it great to enjoy a weekend like that!

great read mate, I enjoyed listening to BA, he is the glue and the reason we’ve been able to collect this extra talent for the 2016 season. Really happy for the team and the staff!
I’m positive it’s just a fraction of what we can expect for the rest of the season.
BA is shaping parramatta’s future and it’s very promising.

Im filthy we didnt get any streamers or one of those machines that blows coloured paper into the air when we held the trophy aloft on the stage, we were freaking robbed on the celebration, the lads were waiting for the bells and whistles on stage but it never happened.
We always get treated like paupers.

Hi sixties – great work once again; really enjoying this site!! – do you have a link to the BA podcast?

Defence and fitness imo won us the 9s. Been a long time since anybody has been able to say that about Parra. What you have been saying in the training reports has been replicated in the 9s performance. Also composure and no panicking under pressure were the hallmarks of our performance.
