Eels 2026 Pre-Season Training – December 8, 2025: Doorey Takes The Gold

It was a very warm Monday morning and the bad news for the players was that the uncomfortable conditions were merely the prelude to a stinking hot Tuesday.

On a positive note, it appears that the rehab group is down to about five or six, meaning that the likelihood of 13 on 13 full field opposed is getting closer.

The highly anticipated Monday news is the announcement of the Tour de Parra shirts. I can confirm that the following players were recognised for their efforts in the previous week:

Matt Doorey – Gold shirt

Sam Tuivaiti – White shirt

Sean Russell – Green shirt

Charlie Guymer – White with red spots

Besides congratulating all players on their efforts, a special shout out to Matt Doorey, who had spent the early part of his return in rehab. To impress the coaches as quickly as he has since rejoining the main squad is evidence of his positive mind set and efforts on the training track.

When the session kicked off, J’maine Hopgood’s group (can I call them the Muggos?) won the dummy half relay passing game. Games are an ever popular part of the warm up and the celebrations are fun to watch.

After warm ups were completed, all players engaged in running mechanics which segued into evasive footwork.

Running shapes

After that, the squad commenced running shapes without opposition. When that was put behind them, it was time for groups of four to attack a staggered defence of two, then another two.

It’s a regular basic drill run at most sessions but my goodness Mitch Moses eats this stuff up. His decision making and execution is beautiful to watch.

Left side vs right side attack followed, and from my vantage point they were fast and sharp. It appeared that one of the goals was around the positioning of the centre and winger.

Finally there was some opposed work that was close to full width, full team. It wasn’t quite full team for both as it was either 12 vs 12 or 13 on 11, but there was a sense of the speed that we saw the team play at in 2025, if not faster.

At the end of the session, we were once more given a glimpse of the value of Josh Addo-Carr to the team. Providing that team vibe is a constant. You always know if the Foxx is part of any session in that regard.

The Foxx and Moey continue the conversation off the field

However, he is a senior player and I reckon he values that role. Before he left the field, he spent a bit of time with Mo Alameddine and it looked like it was about footwork and body positioning. For younger players like Mo in their first full pre-season, getting mentored by internationals exemplifies why preseason training is an essential part of their development.

Before wrapping this up, I can report that Jason Ryles showcased his left foot goal kicking chops.

Rylesy about to strike the ball

Lining up a sideline attempt, the result wasn’t too far away, striking the left upright, albeit under the crossbar.

The next man up also struck the same upright, though his shot has a bit more elevation and bounced through for the goal.well done Jonah Pezet! We might have another kicking option for 2026.

Eels forever!

Parra’s had some exciting wingers over the years, but their value seemed limited to getting over the stripe. The Fox is on another level, he was even likeable in a Storm or Bulldogs jersey and that says a lot.
