The Parramatta Eels needed more than just a bounce back effort after slumping to a disconsolate 20-16 loss the Rabbitohs last week and they did exactly that in Round 25 after BLUDGEONING the Sydney Roosters by 20-points. The Eels were relentless and while it should be acknowledged that the Roosters did lose Sam Walker early in the piece, by the second half the Tri-colours were actively wilting under Parramatta’s incessant barrage.
Sixties and Forty20 revel in a landmark win for the squad as the hard work from the boys and Jason Ryles reaches a frenzied zenith at CommBank Stadium this week!

Last week was their worst performance. This week their best by far.
Just how good is Marky Mark ??? The best player on the park by a country mile.
The best I’ve seen from parramatta all round for years can’t fault anything .I know a few things went our way .stiff shit we deserved that fantastic go parra
Tanky
Wow. If that is the future of PARRAMATTA I’m in. That is the most comprehensive win I have seen in years. In Jason Ryles I trust.
Same mate. I actually like Dean Ritchie but this just proves what a misguided logic he has .
Mea culpa. Joash is our 5/8.
So many more points missed because of escorts.
Lomax has changed the game on his own. Few players ever do that.
I now dislike Tedesco. A cheat and a whinger. Moses scored even though Teddy held him back.
Great performance by all.
Dylan Brown proved how much we need to lock in a good centre for next year.
The whole team has lifted.
Walker had a blinder, so did Guymer, Iongi and Papalii.
Moses was perfect and not a single player was down on effort.
Marky alphabet is a freak but JAC got the points.
If this is what we have to look forward to in 26 I can’t wait.
As I sat through this game, I couldn’t help being reminded of Brian Smith’s best coaching efforts, more so 1997 to 1999 when we still had the ‘Canterbury Four’, than that incredible 2001 season with the unhappy ending. Hopefully when Ryles gets the team humming like it’s 2001 all over again, this time the finale will turn out infinitely kinder.
Thank you
A great performance. The glass half empty part is that we have seen this for years from the Eels – turn in a couple of low effort performances and think it makes up for it by turning up a few weeks later.
They didn’t force an error in the last two games- tonight they forced about a dozen and then the Roosters shot themselves in the foot plenty of times.
Ryley exemplified the effort. Moses second half was great. Probably Tulagi’s best game. And some great moments from JAC and Lomax in particular gifting us tries.
Iongi is still a bit off after a long season and that’s ok. Joash energy level is great and defence has improved quite a lot. Still doesn’t seem to have enough time to make good choices and to shift the ball to the runner out the back.
We got lucky with the Walker injury and Teddy being off and the Roosters coming up with their worst completion rate in a decade.
Worth noting we managed to deserve a 20 point win without making a line break… which isn’t something you say often. So still work to do and would be disappointing if they didn’t replicate thst effort over the last 2 games now that we have seen it.
I think with Papali’i if he’s going to play 5-8 he needs to learn how to manage his tempo. It seems everything is done at a million miles an hour, compare that to Isaiya Katoa who seems to have already mastered the art of playing slow. Jojo needs to know when to put the foot down when running downhill and when to slow himself down when setting up his outside man. Great ball players slow the game down and put the defence in two minds, Jason Smith, Joey & Cliff Lyons were absolute masters of tempo. If I’m Ryles I’m getting Joey in for a few sessions to tutor Jojo in those finer arts. Can’t deny his passion and energy though. He clearly wants to be out there and in the middle of things. He’s not afraid of the moment.
Agree, also needs to dig into the line prior to passing. Early ball is good but not on every occasion
Agree Brett.
Not sure Joey is the mentor we want. His last tutorial period at the Eels delivered ordinary results.
But he needs fundamentals from a Cronk esq player, someone who had to work hard to make it..
We controlled that game from tackle one! We dictated the pace and the field position. We controlled their much vaunted forward pack. Whyte, Collins, Leniu, Radley, Watson…We owned them! We made their completions the lowest of any team this season! We did that!
We controlled Tedesco and limited his running meters. Marky Mark was a freak but JAC has wheels.
Roosters trying to say they were off or because they lost Walker didn’t watch the game we owned it!
I’ve said before this year’s wins are just a bonus it’s all about next year and beyond. We’ll done to Ryles and the fellas.
When the eels are flying – they’re electrifying!! Please let us win one in the next 30 years
Great result, and finally an 80 minute effort
Congrats to those who tipped them at the bookies too
What a performance?!!! 💛 💙
You know what they showed us:
Our boys showed up for their best performance of the season AFTER the coach copped heavy criticism in the media by bulldog, and they HAVE Jason Ryles’s back
Jason Ryles got sacked by the roosters for simply taking interviews with the dragons for a head coaching role, another good thing for Ryles (this win)
A good double whammy here. I’m glad it’s boys have it to Jason’s old employers, and stuck it to the idiot in the media saying “we haven’t improved” or something along those lines
What we saw last night was what could happen if we reduce errors, AND get more 50/50 calls from the ref going our way
Love our mighty eels, and I love the fact the boys made a statement after last weeks Souths game, really proud of their performance last night
So many young players including our inexperienced coaching staff will gain huge confidence from last nights match 💙💛
No better footy than a free flowing parra eels game at commbank. 🤝
Great performance and a terrific game plan: move those big Easts forwards around, make them work hard, beautiful spreads, both flat and deep, mimimise mistakes, kick high and deep and make those forwards lumber back onside.
Moses was back to his precise best. Both wingers were great in very different ways. Penisini was excellent and Brown was committed. Papali’i had his best game. Iongi threatened at the back. All the forwards were very good, but Walker deserves a special mention. Kelma played well; Hopgood held the ball and was mighty; our little terrier, Ryley, provided great service and harassed their kicker; Junior and Williams rucked well.
What fabulous progress this team has made. Sure, there has been an occasional setback but overall it’s been a really good year.
Now let’s take down the Warriors at home (big ask) and finish with a grand finale at the Stadium against the Knights.
I thought Kelma played well running off Mitch..He gave him plenty of ball and he was up to the work load.
Best all round performance by far controlled the game and forced them into errors with great intent and line speed.
Challenge now continues to be narrowing the gap between best and worst that’s gunna be the difference between moving up the table aswell as some key recruitment.
Also glad we have avoided the dreaded spoon we did not deserve that we’re definitely not a bottom 3 team right now.
Wasn’t it great to be at the ground and finally see a referee who referees the game on what is in front of him, and not according to the NRL points table. How refreshing! About the escorts by Roosters, the ref was let down by his touchies. No surprise there.
He is the best young ref the NRL has. Hes calm and doesn’t over ref the game. Even when the rules compel him to make a bad call, he explains to the players why he had to make it., and even though it went against us, I thought he was right not to send Angus Crichton or Billy Smith to the bin for those early blocks.
Wyatt Raymond is the best ref in the game. He officiated last weeks Dolphins v Broncos game. which was a fantastic, open display of footy
Damn that Mark Nawaqanitawase.
It truly would have been 40 – 0 had he not played.
Their first try, held off Fox and the cover and the ball looked like an acorn in his hand waiting until the right moment to pass to Tedesco.
That try to Toia, what a flick pass. How do you defend that ?
He saved 2 tries himself.
If the AFL arnt looking at him moving forward then they are just not doing their due diligence.
Are there any other rugby players like him waiting to be discovered ???
Tks men. When Creighton’s running path and the direction of the ball never looked remotely in synch but we were told it all looked normal, I thought ‘ah that sort of night’, but geez I got that wrong. A couple of observations on the Roosters because I was watching them closely to detect signs of them breaking us down. They were clearly committed to playing hard and fast in the middle to fatigue us, they have been deadly in the final third, for example Walker/DTupou had been thriving once good field position was achieved. Their gang tackling had venom and had all the tricks to slow our ruck. Their defensive formation was very effective. Yet, we stared all this down won the mental and physical battle. And errors, that’s exactly what error counts have been doing to us. Penisini seemed to have Billy Smith in some type of muscle spasm state, he was slipping over, fumbling, dropping. Forty, I agree it’s difficult to perform at this level every week, but we only have 2 games to go, perhaps we can hope. Warriors without their gun No 7, then Knights without form.
Best game for us suffering Eels fans all year for sure. Besides the banana kick and regather to score (and his excellent kicking game in general play), I thought Mitch was quieter than usual in not taking on the line, which speaks refreshingly to more of an overall team performance.
I’m having Josah in any position, purely for his enthusisasm and energy!
Interesting game in that the line defence of both teams was rock solid – only 1 line break all night (Hutchinson?), and despite an intercept and a mirace flick pass from Mark Alphabet, all other tries involed a kick.
Incidentally, surely with Samrani’s first, there has never before been a try in the NRL where the attacking team kicks it 3 teams, followed by the defensive team kicking it once in the same play???
Still buzzing on that game.
Very uplifting to stay in the game with a star studded , physical Roosters team. Going into the game, was fearful Whyte and Crichton would be too powerful, then saw Lenui was starting Ouch.. The performance was all effort and execution, a great evening to have opportunities to stand while things were happening and high fiving those around your area.
If we can jag a decent centre (Dylbro playing better than recently) showed what can happen, and another decent prop to spell Junior would be the start . Great opportunity to build with the basics there.
The vitriol they put on Moses and Gutho for whinging, they aren’t even close to the finish line compared to Tedesco, every decision he was in the refs ear. Said last night, he doesn’t look to pass, friggin glory plays all the time.
Fingers crossed the club can find some gems in the off-season to complement what we have. ( ie not players like Jack Bird, get serious in that area)
1) What it shows is that Dylan Walker must start from now on, even if it means we have a bit of a lull when he has a rest. With him on the field we start like we’re shot out of a gun.
2) TDS has a lot of work to do if he wants more than 20 minutes a game. Right now you can sense Ryles’ reluctance to take Ryley Smith off.
3) Any recruiter now get must either be talented youngsters looking for an opportunity or marquee talent. We have a good baseline talent base now, any recruits must be a clear upgrades on what we currently have. If not, promote from within.

I almost forgot- no spoon for us, that’s right cnts no 2025 spoon for us
How good
A superb win and one of the best all season – easts made errors but we stuck at the game for 80 and I thought Moses managed the game well.
Glad to see we defended well which is pleasing – and we just need to embed this type of game into the teams DNA.
It goes to show the style of footy we can play and also with less errors – and defending them. Well done to all here. Aim up again with that effort and execution pls next week
Still haven’t seen the game (apart from the highlights) but thanks for the after game reactions gents. Much better than last week.
While last week’s loss wasn’t great, there seemed to be a bit of an over reactions. As Parra the week before and the Roosters were shown last night, form can mean nothing when confronted by a team committed to an upset.
A great win that shows that Ryles is not only on the right path but can bring the team back to the path when they stray off if.
I do think Parra can beat the Warriors next week and then the Knights for a good finish to the season.
Pingback: Why Sam Walker is so important to the Roosters chances - The Rugby League Eye Test
The numbers aren’t there for the Eels (metres gained) for 2 reasons. 1. The roosters’ completion rate was abysmal. 53% over the course of the game, 35% in the 2nd half. They just weren’t getting to their kick and Iongi, Lomax and Foxx had nothing to return. 2. When they did get to their kick, due to the kick pressure from Smith the ball barely made it to the 20m line.
And whilst some will point to Walker and Tupou being out for them. They still had a rep level fullback, a rep winger, a rep level centre, rep level hooker that went to half and an all rep level starting forward pack. We took it to them and forced them to crumble. In the previous 3 weeks they scored 116 points and only conceded 28.
This is why the Roosters can bring younger talent though and players like Toia , Walker and Savala make decent impressions early as they are playing outside elite players. Guess it’s no secret but it’s a winning formula , now we need to add some elite type players to assist in young players development. Let’s hope we move in that direction.
