Mary K jumps on board to help Sixties and Forty20 unpack another wild week in the NRL and NRLW. Phil Rothfield teased Parramatta fans with a rumour of a potential backrow addition – is his mail right and who could it be? The Knights have added a second recruit from the Eels to alongside Dylan Brown – could it be his future partner in the halves? Jason Ryles is earning respect in spades across the code with the rookie coach drawing rave reviews from the likes of Andrew Voss and Matty Johns.
The general code chaos is no lie with seismic movements due to injuries, retentions and other roster calls. Jahrome Hughes signs on until the end of 2030 with Melbourne in the same week he gets rubbed out for the remainder of the regulation season. What does this mean for Jonah Pezet? Canberra have told Trey Mooney and Chevy Stewart they are free to look elsewhere while the Titans have apparently down the same for Alofiana Khan-Pereira and Beau Fermor. Does any of this line up for the Eels?

Unless it’s a second rower at the origin level or one with a ceiling like that I don’t feel like it’s worth signing a decent one.
Garner was the name going around a few weeks back but he’s probably sitting near his ceiling rn and is nearly 30. At this point when you have kautoga, Williams, guymer all playing great NRL level, kelma playing great attacking footy and just needs to work on defense aswell as looking at young players like samrani, Latu, funa luta and Lokeni who have a potential big ceiling in the NRL if it isn’t a high level second rower that clearly elevates the current team I don’t think it’s worth cutting off the others pathways.
Looking at kelma and kautoga who seemed to be ryles first choice second rowers at the start of the season over someone like guymer I honestly think David Fifita could work really well under ryles. A second rower who has his defensive issues that ryles believes he can coach out but has incredible attacking footy in them that can break open games. On the right money (far less then his currently reported million a year) I think it’d be an insanely good signing.
Also heard rumours about Campbell being the 1 of the 3 fullbacks at the Titans being squeezed out. I know it’s a far off fairy tale but can a man not dream of a spine of 1. Iongi, 6. Campbell, 7. Moses, 9. Smith, 14. Da Silva with the warchest it’s reported we have.
Sebastian, I agree with you. Any purchase of a second rower has to elevate the side beyond what our current players do. Therefore they need to be elite. Btw, I’m not sure about the size of the war chest, due to some upgrades. I reckon maybe one big acquisition.
With a name like Matt Hunter of course Newcastle would be interested in him!
Very good!
Keown and Tino would both elevate this squad massively. Tino is an elite tier 1 player and Keown has every bit of potential to get to that level. The only other guy I would consider whose name was mentioned is Fifita because his ceiling is so high but it comes with a certain level of risk. No coach so far has been able to consistently unlock him but him at his best is destructive.
Shame with mat hunter he really has come along this year but I’d still have twiddle, papalii and volkman in front of him and Lorenzo has the ability to go well past him. I think the club did the right thing not getting in a bidding war with Newcastle. Don’t really see where the knights have him playing they deadset have four sixes at the club for next year.
Matt Hunter was a surprise packet this year. It placed the club in the position of having not just Fletcher and Talataina emerging, but Hunter too. If Hunter had accepted the Eels offer, it would have been interesting as he would have had to play NSW Cup, and both Hawkins and Volkman under contract.
Love the pages sixties. If it was you sixties, would you have kept hunter over say volkman? We extended volkman before hunters emergence I guess hey, just see a lot of upside in hunter
