I’ve seen plenty of people calling for Cartwright to come back. If the cup stats are to be believed he ran 3 times for 18 metres, made 13 tackles missed 4 and made 1 error in 44 minutes.
I’m not sure what was going on if he was injured or whatever but that is dreadful.
Of note Greig ran for 140m and if he isn’t suspended may have come in.
Kelma had 55 metres, 9 tackles and 3 missed.
This forward pack turnover is desperately needed but is going to hurt.
Surely JAC slots straight in for Russel before the match starts. I simply can’t understand why he wouldn’t be playing. Especially considering that we are in dire need of a leader, or a voice for that matter!
If you look at any of the recent training photos of Addo Carr, he’s got two fingers very heavily strapped. Maybe he is being given every opportunity to play but isn’t a cert.
Well that makes some sense, the only one I can imagine under the circumstances.
I have searched long and hard over both sites and could rationalise that, whereas previously I couldn’t figure it out.
Hey, Poppa is back. Looking for your insightful comments with that’s going on.
I won’t be
Someone asked me if I was Poppa the other day, which I’m not, but are you the same Chief as on 1EE that keeps contradicting yourself with stupid posts?
I noticed it first during the only trial be played and thought it looked really.painful. Saw the same strapping in a recent training pic and thought “that has to be a hindrance”.
Pure speculation on my part but it would make sense.
Of course, it could just be that Ryles hasn’t workout out who to drop yet
I would say JAC hasn’t been named because JR is still looking at who he is going to drop.
He’s probably using training sessions to make a decision.
JAC is a certainty.
Penisini has better pull his socks up.
He needs to give JAC some ball in space.
I’ve never seen a rugby back have such poor basic passing skills and damn he’s slow!
I’d still like to see Samrani take Penisini place but we haven’t got a right winger.
Penisini drowns whenever he has to defend open space. He is too slow to cover the space and his reads are bad on left and right. Having changing backrowers and half inside him doesn’t help but he really should be doing better. hopefully addocar’s energy gives the whole left edge a boost.
Yeah it’s not like Will is a rookie. Whilst still young he has a fair number of games under his belt.
He should well and truly know his craft now.
As for his speed, he really does get caught out a fair number of times, probably too many for JRs. liking.
I suppose Samrani isn’t a speed demon either.
Burton not being available will increase our chances slightly. His bombs generally damage parra and gives his team time to rush up defensively to pin us down on our end.
Hawkins is a big in for us due to his kicking and organisation skills being better suited at Halfback than Volkman.
We need somebody to get Joffa and Dylan brown to show up or we stand zero chance.
Those bulldogs have ran rings around teams this year that would have beaten us.
Somebody send a SOS to Joffa and Dylan and tell them we need their 2023-2024 versions back.
Muz, with no Burton or Kikau there really are no excuses for the Eels. Yes, still no Moses, but surely you aren’t relying on 1 person – the Roosters were weaker than Rd 1 last weekend against the Panthers and look what they did. That was what I was expecting from the Eels against the Tigers but if anything they went backwards. With Hawkins seemingly the main backup 7 being named you would expect a bounce back, but I honestly can’t see it happening. The Eela are just so far off the pace the 1st 2 weeks I’m not sure they can turn it around any time soon, it’s looking more likely it will have to be baby steps.
We’ve been let off the hook with those two out. But that side is still very well dialled in, extremely fit, and good across the park. It’s a balanced side that bulldogs side. We would still have to do very good just to compete with them. There’s no dead weight on that roster, anyone who slacks is sacked. It’s a complete opposite of the eels organisation in that respect in terms of roster management. Bulldogs are ruthless now under Gus & ciro.
Sixties, your opinion on Dylan is spot on, he’s really struggling with his decision to leave the Eels. He’s not comfortable with his decision at all.
His form is not a reflection of him not caring about his team, mentality he just can’t get himself up, his decision is weighing heavily on his shoulders.
I personally think he wishes the Newcastle offer never came and I think his management pressured Dylan to sign the deal.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a backflip on the cards, Newcastle and Dylan are under enormous pressure, not a single person including their own past legends are endorsing this marriage.
I think Dylan is seriously considering a backflip and Newcastle will happily agree.
Joseph Maybe it is some guilt here, but he is also speaking in a way that comes across the wrong way in his interviews, as well as saying he can’t wait to get up there to Newcastle. It’s strange the whole thing to be honest. The interviews are doing him no favours with fans. Hopefully he can block out the distractions and lift his game for the eels this weekend. A few good performances and the external noise & pressure will disappear.
Sadly, I think the Newcastle move will turn out badly. The Knights paid crazily more than they should have and Dylan gives no indication of being able to deliver. With Moses organising Dylan is free to do his thing, which is pretty good. But so far, he hasn’t shown the slightest glimpse of delivering what Newcastle will expect for that money. Think the Eels fans were tough over the weekend. Babes to what he will receive in the Hunter. I feel for him.
It will end in tears McFersie, more so for Newcastle, Dylan gets paid regardless although he won’t come out of it unscathed.
He’ll be paying for every extra dollar he’ll earn in stress dollars.
Hey Muz, I personally don’t read too much into what Dylan has said during interviews.
He doesn’t know if pleasing a club that paid him ridiculous overs or to show some gratitude to the club that has given him everything.
I honestly don’t know if Dylan has it him to perform for us now that he’s leaving the club.
I’ve heard so many times that nothing phases Dylan and that he’s a chilled individual but his last two performances suggest otherwise. Like Spark said, he won’t finish the year. The only way he could survive this season is if he has a change of heart and finds a way to stay an Eel.
Dylan himself said Newcastle are showing faith in him and the other hand he openly admitted he’s not a halfback and went on to say he’s always been a 5/8th. He’s not exactly showing faith in himself.
I’ve already been shot down for suggesting he should’ve stay despite Newcastle’s ridiculous offer. I still stand by my opinion, I think he’s made a huge mistake.
10 years of being under the pump to deliver what frankly he’s not capable of is not pleasant, especially when his worst case scenario is earning $1m a season for the next 7 years next to a player who takes all the heat and makes Dylan look better than he is.
Joseph mate I say this very respectfully but he’s gone.
There is no legal way for a backflip.
I’ve also noticed some people asking if we can get Blaize Talagi (please no) or Ethan Sanders back and it’s all a NO.
As for his manager pressuring him to sign, mate he endorsed the email from his manager to see what’s out there.
I do agree with you though on the one point. Dylan never imagined in his wildest dreams that the Eels wouldn’t come to the party.
Under the old administration, they would have broken the club to resign him and he just assumed that they would follow the Moses path.
Thankfully, in my opinion, JR and Matt Beach saw that it was a chance to unload a player who realistically is a 600k player on a good day.
It just have been a huge shock to both Dylan and his manager.
I personally think it’s just going to go downhill from here.
I reckon he will ask for some time away via the mental health card.
I can’t see Dylan lasting the year to be honest and the Knights don’t have any room in their cap to grab him.
Maybe there will be some fancy accounting whereby we grab one of their players.
When Moses is fit and well, our halves will be Moses/Hawkins.
All fair points Spark.
Can the deal be reversed if all parties agree?
Mate I read my reply back to you and I may have sounded somewhat condescending. I honestly didn’t mean to so I hope you took no offence.
Hmm I suppose if the two parties agree but I’m telling you, Ryles just doesn’t rate him at the money he’s getting.
He was ecstatic that the knights have grabbed him no matter what he’s saying publicly because it frees up so much cash.
If worlds collide and there is a way, he won’t be staying at 6.
Dylan Brown couldn’t organise a root in a brothel as they say.
Dean Hawkins has a gold standard ticket to cement himself as the NRL five eighth moving forward.
It’s a great opportunity.
If Dylan Brown was ever going up be a million dollar half I reckon he would have shown it already.
How many years have Parramatta fans been waiting for Dylan Brown to arrive ?
How many years has Dylan Brown told us that he has to settle down and play better ?
99% of people can’t understand what Peter O’Sullivan sees in him that others don’t.
O’Sullivan has been chasing him forever, when he was at the Warriors and then when he was at the Dolphins.
O’Sullivan may just be a genius and Dylan may just flick a switch and fulfil his potential.
Not at all Spark, you made valid points mate.
Against Melbourne i was always worried with two small wingers Against to Specialist wingers in the air. Tigers was poor effort but we haven’t got side Ryles wants, Matterson was tap on shoulder but know interest.
I’d like to see Josh on 1 wing with Samrani on his inside, Lomax on the wing and Russell on his inside that gives us the fastest backline we can muster and players that actually give it their all
Yes, Samrani was great on his debut. When was the last time a Parra winger ran (almost) 200m? I cannot recall. Sivo never really ran far in his 100 try career. Even Gutho struggled to get those numbers consistently week in week out. I really think Samrani needs to keep his spot either wing or centre. But he’s shown he’s a threat on the wing which is rare for us.
Yes fair points. I hope Hawkins gets more support from his halves partner.
Our forwards are fitter but still lack impact and fight. The younger forwards; May, Haas. Carrigan, Tino all have it. We don’t have impact or the fight.
I think the cooling off period has passed. We are seeing the version of Dylan not seen by us before. Let’s call it the Golden Sheaf version and I don’t like this version.
The issue I have as someone else said Lomax last year came out and played his best footy and never disrespected Dragons in interviews or on the field.
Dylan is paid good money to do a job but is clearly sulking and maybe he is disappointed. But once he crosses that white line it’s game on! The first game ok. But, the second game No excuse is Acceptable. He’s playing in a dinner suit and you can see him looking and watching instead of acting. Volkman needed support from a senior partner and he was left high and dry.
It’s been obvious he’s not putting in. I think the fans deserve better than that and his team mates deserve better than that.
With his interviews saying he can’t wait to get there? He’s already checked out and now he’s rubbing our noses in it. It wasn’t about the money? Please!
He’s been ill advised and the longer it goes on the more damaging it is for everyone. He’s thrown his toys out of the cot and is sulking. Everyone has always made excuses for Dylan. That time has ended! 2 disrespectful interviews and 2 sulking games. Enough is enough
The Knights fans are livid about this signing! They know he’s not a 7 and they’ve seen his interviews. He’s going to cop a rude shock.
Well put, Pete. I’ve never been a fan. Galvin, in just his second year of NRL at only 19, is already the better player. If we manage to acquire him—likely at the same price Dylan is currently on—it’ll be a blessing in disguise.
He brings more to the game, and you can see the opposition hesitating, knowing he has more than just an inside step in his arsenal.
Have a read of what Lane said on Yahoo news. I wish they’d send him to Rome. He’s one of the major reasons we are so inspid. Can’t believe this bloke is at our club.
Actually I find Lane refreshing. He is I feel being very honest. But nothing takes away the fact that the first two rounds were completely unacceptable in terms of effort, attitude, application…everything actually. So I can understand how it sounds like Lane is just defending the indefensible
Agree. Watch the Bulldogs new 6 on debut do the same.
We as a club put this guy on a pedestal.
Every year we were fed he’s going to be great and he’s got such potential etc..
We allowed a slew of players to depart knowing he had options and that Mitch gets injuries and rep duty was likely. Yet we went all chips in with Zero insurance.
We are truly a dumb club. Anyone can see Galvin is a big body and very talented. It’s a joke we gambled on
Brown. Potential has never served this club. Potential at Parra is a mirage it disappears as you get closer to it. Forget potential we need grit, scrap, fight and toughness. We lack those qualities. Bulldogs have recruited on the fight we have recruited the sulk and flight. The new signings are excluded from this because they are all showing fight.
MON and Rogers need to go! Sarantinos iif he wants to learn about football he needs to do their jobs for the rest of the year.
Agreed, he is and was being paid on potential. Lets see how he goes this week..but as others have said our forwards and I mean experienced ones have showed littler desparation and leadership.
Blokes like Sean lane saying this and Dylan brown saying he can’t wait to go to Newcastle are painting a very negative picture for this club this year and honestly, this would all be unacceptable at other clubs to say things like these two:
https://news.google.com/rss/articles/CBMifEFVX3lxTFBiUUlKcFMzcFowdnpsbEpGRTNDaGNJSFFCamhaWS1wdnBnRC1NRnE0am93UmlFeVk4QVZhMHdEajlJSVh6bUcwaUJSN2p6UWRQQXdWNkFsS2J6Z3JwbkFhRFBMdVh6UTBsT0JSZU91TFlOWXZzbnZFanhzRzU?oc=5&hl=en-AU&gl=AU&ceid=AU:en
While Sean is seemingly honest and shares his mind which is often appreciated, this to every person who understands the basics of human physiology can see this is a defeatist mindset and it’s absolutely no wonder we look so bad and look like we don’t even think we can win.
The fellas on the podcast mentioned younger players adapting better, which is true, but why are older players like Williams who’s almost 30 adapting to it like flame next to fuel?
If the Snr eels players think its ok to give up or just expect to lose this year like what Lane is saying on this article.
This will be one of the worst years in modern eels history, and may set us back 3 years in terms of recruitment and reputation. NO GOOD PLAYERS sign at loser teams who collect a wooden spoon and lose every week.
The comparison to bulldogs Sean makes is valid EXCEPT…. For one thing..
The bulldogs had ABSOLUTELY shocking roster with garbage halves, even Burton was playing rubbish at 5/8 kicking balls out regularly in ciros first year…
And he DID NOT have a bulldogs team with 2 elite halves and a pack with several former rep playing forwards in the roster, and the games best outside back of 2024 in Zac Lomax.
The excuses and garbage to throw away this year (mentally) is completely unacceptable – much like what sixties was saying on the podcast.
There’s absolutely zero excuses to collect a wooden spoon with apparently the top 3 halves combo in the game, and a forward pack on paper which looks light years better than what ciro had in his first year at the dogs.
I’m obviously speaking emotionally here – but these senior eels SHOULD NOT have this mindset at all – bulldogs did nothing under ciro the first year because they had the games weakest forward pack and a bottom 4 halves combination.
I know what we think and say doesn’t mean anything. But reading this crap from Lane is what makes me think the club needs to just clean out the older players because they don’t seem to have any fight or the mentality that they are winners.
I can’t see any evidence of scrap and fight in the parramatta eels senior players anymore – under Brad whenever we made finals all those years, we had tough agressive forward packs, in fact I’ve never seen parramatta be a successful rugby league team without a tough forward pack.
We’ve always failed when softness and old age has crept into our forward packs and it sadly seems like the same negative pattern is happening again like we seen in the past. Whenever we’ve become a retirement home spoons and thrashings shortly followed. 😩
I don’t expect immediate success – my personal prediction was next year is when we would see a giant leap forward, but I will not accept “no progress” this season. We CAN and should do so. Having a rebuild / “we will succeed later” mindset is a recipe for a lack of urgency leading to massive failure in the present moment.
I’ll make it brief for you mate, with blokes like Lane in Eels colours we’ll never win shit. I thought coaches watched videos and dissected players efforts . This sorry excuse for an Eel absolutely shits on proud players who’ve gone before.
Good points Muz,
Remember Lane delayed his elective knee Arthroscopy until it could be used to avoid off season training instead of having it done in September, October, November or even December. He had it late so he could miss the Start of this season and a have limited off season. Harry Grant talked about the players that do this. With the change of coaching staff it was easy to be missed.
What Lane is saying the old guard have quit
until say August when they’ll suddenly start
playing for their next contracts. Players like
Joe O and Carty off contract this year will have to start earlier. But, Lane, Matto, Junior etc are able to start negotiating in November
for the 2027 season. Lane is very honest and
Basically stating what we all know. The old guard have too much sway over this club and need to be cut out surgically.
An article mentioning bringing back Blaize. He was shifted to centre for Panthers cup side because of his poor defence. So NO to Blaize.
Does anyone think Galvin will supposedly take the lucrative offer tigers will offer?
Hopefully the dream of playing in the blue and gold brings him home.
I think Metcalf might be a good option.
Galvin WILL re-sign with the Tigers. Isaac Moses has suckered the Tigers by saying he will go to November 1. The Tigers would have offered him $7-800k, now to keep him they will have to pay a million, and they will, and he will stay.
There’s been a lot of comments about Paulo not taking a hit-up until the 3rd set, Carty running 18m etc. Yes those can be disappointing but I wonder if this is the new system that the coaching staff want? In both grades every single back 5 player ran for over 100m (Lowest in first grade was Iongi at 129 and lowest in reserves was Smalley was 113). When was the last time we had this happen? Not in any round that I remember. To me there is a concerted effort to shift hit-ups away from the forwards and give them to the backs. This is the way penrith play and we needed to move towards, the problem is that our forward pack is geared towards attack rather than defence.
I’ve also seen criticism of Hopgood saying he’s not good in attack anymore. To me no other forward, even Williams, has embraced this move toward being a defensive side more than he has. Against the tigers in his 64 minutes he made 46 tackles, this equates to .71 tackles per minute. Last year from memory prior to his injury he was making .63 tackles per minute which saw him as top 5 tackles per minute amongst middle forwards. I think his problem is that workload is on his shoulders rather than spread out with his other 2 middles.
This reset, not rebuild, will take time. And the way I believe Ryles wants us to play will take until the “attack” forwards are replaced with “defensive” forwards.
