Lower Grade Live Update Blog – Eels vs Roosters

On a tough weekend for us all, I’ve decided to head to Wentworth Park to check out the Eels Jersey Flegg and NSW Cup teams run around against the Roosters.

I can’t blog like Forty but I’ll do my best.

The NSW Cup team won lost week against the Bears, whilst Flegg welcome a host of reinforcements.

Lets do this!

Jersey Flegg

1 Tyler Cuthbert
2 Mohamed Alameddine
3 Dakota Kakoi
4 Domenico De Stradis
5 Devonte Vaivela
6 Apa Twidle
7 Joshua Lynn
8 Sam Tuivaiti
9 Ryley Smith
10 Lachlan Mears-Crabbe
11 Will Lewis
12 Michael Abdow
13 Saxon Pryke

14 Yehya Ayache
15 Max Tupou
16 Lance Fualema
17 Teancum Brown
18 Zachary Hunter
On a personal note, there’s an antique fair on today at Wentworth Park so parking was awful!
First Half
Parra kicking off.
Penalty to Roosters at the end of the first set with their kicker tackled. Now it’s all too easy as the defenders are drawn to the middle and the dummy half swings the play left. Try in the corner.
conversion unsuccessful
Rooster 4 nil after 3 minutes
Eels conjure up another set after the Roosters fumble a last tackle kick, Easts defend well and field another grubber a metre out.
Good field position for Parra as the Cuthbert takes the kick and brings it up to halfway. Disaster now with a poor play the ball one tackle later. The Roosters are soon back in Parra’s quarter and are back drinking from the same well as they spread left and the winger dives over in the corner.
Conversion unsuccessful
Roosters 8 lead Eels nil after 11 minutes
Another penalty now follows for a strip.
Yet another penalty this time on the Erls quarter for what looked like a straight forward big hit by Mears-Crabb. He’s on report.
The Roosters waste no time in setting for a play to the left. And the winger is in.
Conversion again waved away.
Roosters 12 Eels nil after 15 minutes
Parra force an error and are soon in the Roosters quarter. Good defence prevents what looked like a try coming Lynn’s way. We throw an intercept.
More possession for Parra as they get offloads away and the Roosters get a hand to it. A last tackle grubber kick from Riley Smith gets a couple of deflections and it looks like Twidle has dived on the ball behind the posts.
Conversion successful by Twidle
Roosters 12 Eels 6 with 13 minutes in the half to go.
Golden opportunity for Parra as a penalty and then a Roosters hand on a loose pass gets repeat sets and takes Parra into the quarter. The play is centred and Riley Smith takes the odds to a dart at the posts. They try to hold him up in the air but he somehow stretches his arm to plant the ball.
Twidle converts from in front
Eels 12 Roosters 12
Parra get to their kick following the restart and now the Roosters fumble. The pressure is on. A last tackle play looks promising but the ball is dropped.
Huge defensive set from Parra as they pin the Roosters in the quarter. OOOMPH! It looks like Brazel and Pryke are the ones who’ve delivered the pain, but whoever it was has forced a massive turnover. The Eels ask some decent questions now. The ball swings right and it goes out the back to Twidle on the sweep. He slices through the defenders to grab his second try!
Brilliant sideline conversion of his own try now from Twidle.
Eels 18 lead Roosters 12. With just over a minute remaining
Parra complete their set and get a kick in and then force a Roosters error. The scrum is set with 9 seconds remaining. Parra are going to have a 30 metre field goal shot from this scrum. The ball goes to Lynn but it’s not a good strike.
Half time Eels 18 Roosters 12
Second Half
The half begins with errors from both teams. Parra complete a set by forcing a drop out. Roosters attempt a short drop but knock it forward. Parra again asking questions in the quarter. Twidle puts in a short grubber. It takes the deflection and he regathers and crosses. He gets a bit of attention as he looks to ground it and he’s lost it!
Seven tackle set for Easts but they make an errors just over halfway. Parra surging again into the quarter and that man Twidle goes himself and scores his third.
Conversion successful
Eels 24 lead Roosters nil
Geez that looks like a tough call. Cuthbert is ruled to have knocked on a Roosters kick after it took and awkward bounce. I’m not sure he did. Scrum on the Eels ten. And the swing in momentum may have come. It’s great defence from Parra for about four tackles. There’s a dogs breakfast at the play the ball and the dummy half steals the try.
wide conversion successful
Eels 24 Roosters 18 with 21 mins remaining
And just like that the match swings. Easts make a huge break after the restart. They get another set when Parra bay a pass over the sideline. They then get a penalty and now it’s try time as their big middle interchange forward is unstoppable on a crash play.
Conversion successful
Eels 24 Roosters 25 with 17 minutes to go
Eels trying to ruck off their line and they get a penalty. Oh no. Parra have fumbled the ball on the first tackle!!! Errors are the death of any football team and this will be costly I’m sure.
You guessed it. The try now follows with a 20 metre dart out of dummy half that beats the markers and the fullback
Conversion successful
Roosters 30 lead Eels 24 Ten minutes to go
Alameddine takes a catch off the short restart. An average set in attack follows. The last tackle kick is fielded by Easts who lose the ball but ref has called a Parra knock on.
Scrappy stuff from Parra now as they butcher a right side shift on their next possession.
Time ticking away.
Another lost ball follows on their next set.
And that’s the game now. There’s a chip over the top on the last. It finds the grass and the bounce is perfect for the chaser who regathers and stretches out in Cuthbert’s tackle to plant the ball.
Roosters 36 Eels 24 with a minute remaining

Quick Comment
This game was there to be won. Parra had all the momentum and it just turned around completely on the back of an error (or perhaps tough call).

First Half

Last chance to get an Eels win this weekend! Parra to kick off.

Both teams exchange sets between the quarters. First genuine opportunity now for the Roosters as they get a late set restart call. Parra defend exceptionally well. The ball goes to their half and an Eels play charges out of the line to apply kick pressure. He takes advantage of the hole in the line, stepping the charging player and darting through to score.

Conversion successful

Roosters 6 Eels nil after 8 minutes

Roosters penalty after the restart but Parra now get an obstruction penalty.

Play advances to the Roosters quarter. Arthur makes a half break then they explore the left wing. Sivo does well to not get bundled into touch. Sanders hoists a bomb and Cini rises above the defenders, takes the ball, then pulls out of the tackle to score!

Sanders converts

Eels 6 Roosters 6 after about 13 minutes

It’s a case of take 2 for Parra here. The Roosters touch a Parra kick and the ball goes into touch. The try is on in the left corner but Loizou has a crack himself and then offloads to Cini. Parra centre play then go left again. This time Cini injects himself into the line then gets a late offload to Sivo who casually dispenses with the lone defender to score.

Brilliant sideline conversion from Sanders

Eels 12 Roosters 6 around 20 minutes gone

Tuilagi pushes through the defence on the Roosters 40 and finds Arthur in support. He’s juggling the pass and gets hit and the ball comes free. Eels defenders seem to watch as the Roosters fullback catches the ball on his quarter then weaves through the middle past players and bounces through a tackle to score an 80 metre try.

Conversion successful

Eels 12 Roosters 12 with 12 minutes on the clock.

Another incomplete set from Parra.

what!!! The Roosters winger is being hurled into touch by Lumelume and flings the ball desperately infield. It’s gone forward but allowed to stand as they fall on it. A last tackle kick is fielded by Cini but he’s driven in goal.

Short drop out and Parra force an error. Hang on. I’m typing the play up and Parra has lost the scrum. Against the feed?

Anyway, the Roosters are in possession and they try to get outside Lumelume. The pass isn’t great and Lumelume drives the winger over the sideline with help from other defenders.

Parra get to their kick but Easts get a penalty, then a set restart and then another penalty this time for a high shot. It’s too much to defend as the half back again steps defenders then pulls out of Cini’s tackle to score in the shadow of half time.

Conversion goes over as the siren sounds.

Roosters 18 Eels 12

Half time

Second Half

Parra receiving the kick off. Sivo blasts down the wing and as he’s confronted he tries to pass inside to supports but it’s a shocker. Knock on.
Roosters penalty now. They grubber into the in goal and Sivo grounds it. Short drop out from Parra but it fails to go the ten. Penalty!

Roosters opt for a tap. Parra do well enough to defend their line and Easts cough it up late in the set.

What a reply from Parra. They go right early and Lumelume is put into space. He’s tackled just short of the line. Now a huge shift left to Sivo who brushes away multiple defenders and gets a pass to Sanders who scores!

Wide conversion unsuccessful

Roosters 18 Eels 16 after about 8 minutes.

Another good set from Parra and they get to the quarter before going through the hands to Lumelume. He’s in two minds as the defence converges and is bundled into touch in front of the corner post.

What a play from Sivo! A short high ball is hoisted out wide by Sanders. Sivo flies high and catches it just inside the sideline then gets a pass to Cini who dives over out wide.

Conversion unsuccessful

Eels 20 lead Roosters 18 with 21 minutes remaining

The Roosters fullback has had a cracking game but he’s just dropped an Eels kick. The Eels head left early but then come back right. That’s not good though as Lumelume is fed a wide ball and easily bundled into touch.

Roosters follow up with a break down their left but as they’re tackled the ball is thrown forward. Eels start this set from their 30. I’m not even going to try to describe their last tackle play. It was spectacular but the ball was ultimately gathered by the Roosters. Early tackle error now from Easts just outside their quarter. A good set from Parra, with Tuilagi threatening but Easts hang on.

That’s a tough call and I hope it’s not costly. Sanders hoists a bomb and Cini chases and legitimately contests it. The fullback spills it and gets the penalty. Just as I feared the cost comes. Again the Roosters half runs the ball close to the line. He evades defenders and what looks like a loose pass finds the number nine who scores next to the posts.

Conversion successful.

Roosters 24 lead Eels 20 with five minutes to go.

Another Roosters penalty! The count must be astronomical!

Full time Roosters 24 defeat Eels 20

Tough loss here. Roosters just too good but there were literally no calls going Parra’s way in this one. None!

If the blog suddenly stops I’ll assume you found the antique fair to be a less frustrating option to look at and I won’t blame you

  2. Shaun

I was just about to say earlier Sivo should have taken the line on rather than passing inside earlier and then he does take the line on and passes inside for Sanders to score.

      1. Shaun

Yep. Your description of his 1st half try is perfect. Sivo’s second half was good. Almost like the Sivo of old.

  3. Carmel

Bugger! Sounds like a great game except for penalties. Sounds like the boys were really fighting hard like last week but just ended up on the wrong side of the score board. In your opinion, any player pushing for an NRL spot? Thank you again for the live scores.

The problem with blogging is I miss chunks of the play as I try to type what’s happening. I tend to miss the yardage work from forwards after a kick off and conversely the defence at those times. That said, I thought Sivo was much improved and Tuilagi caused damage with his charges. Sanders was solid at half. Unfortunately Arthur took a nasty hit in the first half and only reentered the game with about five minutes to go.

      1. Carmel Spiteri

Arthur would have been missed – he’s been a stand out in a losing team so far. Glad to hear Sanders played well – he played well last week too. Dan Keir is Mr Versatility and always defends and takes the ball up well no matter where he has to play. Did Matt Doorey make his comeback today? He was playing well before he got injured

Twidle went ok in cup. New fullback from Queensland was busy. Alameddine went well too. In the forwards it was Pryke and Brazel but as I said to Carmel I miss a lot of the forward grunt work after restarts as I’m still finishing try and conversion updates.
For Cup, also see my reply to Carmel. Please note, Matt Arthur was off for most of the second half after copping a shot in the first half

        Thanks Legend.

Let’s hope the development of some of these players continue.

Pryke and Brazel are ones to watch.

How did Guymer go at Lock?

  4. pete

    Thanks Sixties.
Full credit to you for backing up and covering these games.
Unfortunately, Another clean sweep of losses.

Are there any players that could cut it against Sea Eagles?

Did you see Anyone from the club hierarchy? Or Football department?

Sivo and Tuilagi could get a recall and out of left field Tago is someone to keep an eye on in future games.
BA was there. Saw him as I left. Didn’t see others but I was busy enough blogging

  5. Joseph

Thank you for covering these games, disappointing results, but good to hear Sivo is slowly coming out semi retirement.

It’s pretty clear Brad has lost the dressing room and not really sure why ,the one thing I’ve noticed with brad is he surrounds himself with yes men and men I’d consider to be dumb assistants and men who have never achieved much in the game , it’s clear he needs to go but I’m not sure our banker board will be willing to pay him out

    1. poppa

I don’t understand your question/statement….. not sure our banker board would be willing to pay him out….. could you explain why you think they would not if they wanted to?

By implication you want BA gone, we get that….but why is the banker board the problem?

It would seem to me you want to criticise the board, because the Chairman is a banker….is that right?
All I am saying Ivan is, I don’t think you know what you want by explanation.
