The Tip Sheet – 2023 Ep 59: Massive Origin Breakdown & Round 20 Previews

The Tip Sheet is also available on Spotify and iTunes!

The Blues avoided the series sweep while in the Under 19s the men and women played two pulsating contests to close out State Of Origin in 2023. The Tip Sheet looks at what went down in all three matches and how the Parramatta representatives fared. Sixties and Forty20 celebrate Mitchell Moses tasting his first Origin success and RCG’s triumphant return as well as Ethan Sanders and Charlie Guymer starring in the Under 19s.

Round 20 previews focus on the NSW Cup and NRL this week with the Jersey Flegg on the bye. Reserve grade receives a boost this week with Makahesi Makatoa and Ofahiki Ogden forced back down due to NRL reinforcements. Will they be enough to turn the tide for the struggling Cup team?

In the NRL the Eels are hunting a rapid bounce back win against the Titans. With a congested ladder and a tough upcoming schedule this is a game that Parramatta need to win. Moses, Gutherson and Campbell-Gillard will all back up from Origin while Shaun Lane returns to the starting backrow. It is the strongest line up the Eels can name until Round 23 but the Titans possess plenty of strike power. It will be take a focused effort through the middle to win on Sunday but Parramatta have the squad to get it done.

Tks men. I thought Yeo went a little better in SOO than you indicated, got himself involved, made ground and busy in defence.
Like Moses/Walker working, Murray/Yeo worked in a different way, and I think you guys actually discussed that for Game2.
Titans will shift wide early with speed out wide, Foran will throw long cut outs in red zone to catch out compressed defence, they will work Fifita into space out wider n red zone. These are their party tricks we must spoil.

  2. Ron

As much as Jake trobjevic has really struggled with his offensive running in recent years, his defence, leadership and passing is something I would love at parra. Junior and reg are great but there is such a strain on hopgood to clean up our middle/ruck as our big boys struggle to keep feet moving/have line speed/wrestle. Also jake has a much faster play the ball than junior. So, all in all, I think juniors demotion was justified (but maybe should have been on bench for Safiti). But one of him/rcg should be on bench Next origin with jurbo and hass starting.

    1. Rocket

      Watched Jurbo last night.
Responsible for at least 3 6 again calls of which 1 led to a try. He was also left on the ground in the ruck which again lead to a try.
Maybe he needed to be interchanged and given a break.
I don’t see what he brings.

      1. Ron

He does tend to give away a few six agains but that’s understandable as plays 80 mins in a pack that got dominated last night ( and most weeks). If it was our props under that workload and onslaught they would be lying in ruck and too lazy to get back to marker or on side. Not saying Jake is better than junior and rcg but he’s being underrated.

      2. John Eel

Rocket in SOO III he played 60 minutes and ran 65 metres. 21 PCM. RCG on the other hand got 48 minutes and ran 135 metres. He also had 45 PCM.

But it is always Jake who gets the kudos.

  3. Shaun

Regardless of the draw. Parra are in charge of their own destiny. Despite the result last week, the team are building and with players returning and Brown to come back and Origin done they can peak for the finals.

NSW’s origin campaign was a strange one with too much focus on Panther Ball. You could argue it was Bunnies Ball that won game 3 but Mitch and Cody combined well. Next year, form not reputation needs to be a factor in selections. The team has weighed down with incumbents who did not earn their keep.

On Ethan Sanders, if the club can keep him that would be a great coup.

As for today, I’m a bit worried about Gutho backing up after his massive Origin stint but hoping his superior fitness gets him through the game. RCG first try score and Sivo to finally score a double. Go Parra!
