The Tip Sheet – 2023 Ep 45: The King’s Birthday Game Against Canterbury

The Tip Sheet is also available on Spotify and iTunes!

The Tip Sheet previews one of Parramatta’s traditional grudge matches as the Eels visit the Bulldogs on the King’s Birthday public holiday. Sixties and Forty20 cover yesterday’s result in the Jersey Flegg before running their eyes over the NSW Cup and NRL matches.

The losses of Wiremu Greig, Joe Ofahengaue and Dylan Brown are somewhat offset by the huge return of Reagan Campbell-Gillard from a groin injury. Junior Paulo is also back after representing the Blues in Adelaide. The boys look at how the likely inclusion of Daejarn Asi will impact the team and what needs to be done to ensure the Eels secure the win on the weekend that ‘BA’ becomes King Arthur as the longest serving head coach of the club.

Another informative podcast, and a coup”e of things worth commenting on.

Believe the club is prioritising getting the younger players experience so they can mature faster and that’s why they have been accelerated into Flegg this early in their career . Bringing these players through as a unit is not dissimilar to the Riff experience and hopefully brings like results.

The mention of speed being an Achilles Heel is much as I see it. Recruitment last off season was patchy and probably poor when looking at backs. Not only do we seem short , even given injuries, but don’t appear to have much top-line speed. If you saw the Manly game last night, they were able to finish off half breaks due to their backline speed. Their 3/4 line and full back would all be quicker than what we have. The only out and out speedsters are our halves , and that needs to be addressed at the end of the season for ongoing success.

KO Cup side in their losses underline this issue.

Yes, that disparity in backline pace is my main concern today. We have arguably the fastest halves pairing in the NRL, but there are no gun speedsters outside of them. It’s why the club publicly addressed that search for a fullback/outside back search earlier in the season.

    Big win Monday.
Moses takes us to origin Glory.
Brown comes back in the lead up to the semifinals as we deny the Panthers and preserve eels as the last threepeat grand finalist while breaking our drought.
Gutho lifts trophy with CC medal dangling round his neck!! Believe !!!!

For Mitch’s sake I would like to see him selected for NSW and I know he would not let anyone down in such elite company.

However as an avid Eels fan I prefer him in the Eels squad. My thoughts are that if we can get into the four from here with our new recruits bedded in, we have the cattle to repeat last season.

      Maybe go one better.

My selfish motivations are that Moses rightful claims are ignored. But damn he deserves his time in that company.

I’m keen to seen how Daejarn goes. I remember seeing him playing with the Warriors and thought he has some talent. His career so far indicates he has not realised his potential but I hope he does at the Eels.

As for the Dogs yes they have a fast back line but if the Eels can dominate via the forwards that will limit their effectiveness. That said, if Eels play to their strengths they will be okay.

And can it happen twice in one season? I’ve had a vision of RCG trampling over Mahoney to score the fist try. And Sivo to score a double. Go Parra!
