The Tip Sheet – 2024 Ep 63: Origin 2 Wrap & Round 17 Preview

The Tip Sheet is also available on Spotify and iTunes!

The Tip Sheet combines preview and review this week as Sixties and Forty20 wrap up game two of Origin and then look to a triple header against the Newcastle Knights.

Sixties and Forty20 celebrate a legacy game for Mitchell Moses after he delivered a masterful perfomance against Queensland to force a decider. Zac Lomax also lodged another outstanding effort with what was essentially a preview of the looming club combination between the two Blues.

Round 17 has the Eels on the road to Newcastle in all three grades and the boys go in depth to see whether the Flegg and Cup can bounce back from losses to the Raiders last weekend. In the NRL the focus is on the debut of Matt Arthur and how Parramatta can roar out the bye and ambush the Knights.

  1. Cardinal

Madge Maguire is committed to Parramatta. Get ready for an announcement but it may be after origin 3

      1. Cardinal

Did you watch nz smash Australia?

What has Hannay done. I’ll tell you – absolutely zero as in statistics to show he could successfully coach.

        1. Ron

You’re delusional if you think Madge is the right coach for us. Getting a win in origin or kiwis means stuff all because those teams have won nothing and, in any event, tend to run themself (as they have good leaders – jfh, leota, tapine, Foran for Nz and Jake t, yeo, Murray for nsw). You can bet your bottom dollar the nsw/kiwi players would not put up with Madge’s intense approach for much more than the 10 days they already do in nsw camp. It is not sustainable nor productive of success in the modern day.

Also, it is curious that you raise one game for kiwis but omit to mention the game before when they got belted and the fact he bottled the World Cup by trying to play Brandon smith too long and not using bench properly. Even in origin, Madge is using Jake t in an odd way, barely using hamoule and barely using Connor Watson. He also didn’t go with utility on bench for game 1 when every Tom dick and Harry knew that was common sense with hynes calf injury and stats re: HIA.

          1. BDon

Haumole is an interesting one. I reckon he’s refined his game over past 2 years and is crying out for more minutes in Origin, but he’s a bit like a predator, measured at first then in for the kill. Off the bench doesn’t easily match that profile but he’s getting the feel of it all. Murray, Crichton and Martin are a pretty strong back 3 so no suggesting HO is being overlooked, but geez I’d like to see him wind up and unleash.

        2. Muz

Cardinal maybe madge is a successful rep type player coach

I’m not sure how ways would steer the eels in the right direction for the long term

Although I do feel like in the short term he would swing things around somewhat

I would prefer Ryles over Hannay

But I get what you mean Madge is the far more experienced candidate

I just don’t believe it would help attract a lot of Recruits to our club after players watched tiger town

Maybe him winning origin 3 with this gun NSW team of ours may boost his stocks on being an attractive coach to play under again

I’m not suggesting you are wrong cardinal mate, I was just curious your thoughts on him after that

I don’t mind him, but just unsure about some of his ways in todays nrl game as a long term approach to player management but obviously that’s just a personal opinion

All of us just want whatever is best for our club and hope for the best

  2. Noel Beddoe

Origin – isn’t Mitch superb when he’s just a major cog in an effective wheel, rather than the individual who has to carry all responsibility? If he and Nathan Cleary were to swap clubs not a thing would change for either side.
And are we teally certain we’re not interested in Madge as our coach?

    1. Muz

Hey Noel, it was beautiful to see Mitch shine out there. With great players around him, and his obviously superb performance, he was looking like a sterlo or Andrew johns type of performer out there.

He would win premierships if he had the right team around him I believe, his long Kicking and short kicking is absolutely elite,

His the whole package really, speed, defence, running game, instinct.

I also agree about Nathan Cleary.

Is he maybe over rated as a half back slightly?

I know he’s very very good.

But panthers look no worst without him playing.

Obviously it’s a great team panthers – but Nathan has never shown a performance at origin level even Remotely close to that quality.

Dumb Paul Gallen was always on TV saying he doesn’t believe moses was worth $1 m.

Then he changed it to “maybe he’s worth it for parramatta”

After seeing him come back and we smashed the sharks.

Now he will be forced to admit that he just pulled the best performance from a NSW halfback since the 05 great Joey Johns game.

Maybe Gal will be forced to apologise and realise he was sounding like a fool? Lol 🙂

      1. John Eel

There is a big difference playing for Penrith and playing for NSW. Penrith play to a system. Everything is orchestrated. Cleary is comfortable with that.

SOO is different. You have a squad of elite players the best in NSW. These players gather for a short time and while still playing to a game plan they play what they see in front of them.

I have always argued that SOO is not the best football for Nathan Cleary. Mitch on the other hand had complete freedom to run the team on Wednesday for the first time and he did it superbly.

He may not be back to his best fitness following his injuries.

Notwithstanding he played a game on Wednesday that Cleary has never matched. Assuming Cleary will be fit for Origin III. What will Madge do? It will be his biggest selection challenge since taking on coaching NSW.

Spoiler alert, I am a big Mitch fan. Who wouldn’t be, 4 try assists, kicked for 430 metres and 25 tackles.

          1. John Eel

I agree obviously. What I was trying to say above is that while Cleary has established himself as the best NRL 7. He has not had the same dominance in SOO.

        1. Muz

John Mitch had no control over the team under filter

He told him to just run the ball and kick long 🙄

Under Madge, mitchel got reigns to control the team and attack

I’m glad fitter is gone and we got to see our Mitch get to control the side

Although eels are slow this year

At least we can be very proud of Mitchell and his achievements in SOO

That will be talked about between his kids and grandkids one day

Let’s go one better – wouldn’t it be awesome if he could steer the NSW blues into a victory at Suncorp in the decider

  3. 56 years an eel

    More of the same luck.

J’maine Hopgood will need the Eels to go deep into the finals if he is to be a chance of taking the field for them again in 2024, following confirmation he will sit out at least three months due to back surgery.

The Eels said in a statement that following consultation with specialists it’s been decided Hopgood will undergo a microdiscectomy procedure, which will require a 12-week recovery period.

    1. sixties

As I said 56, outside of Dylan, if you were to name 3 players that we didn’t want missing significant time in 2024, it was Moses, Gutho and Hopgood

  4. Muz

I caught on to that too 60’s when johns mentioned moses defence 🙄 I was like what ?

it shows clearly he has no idea on a lot of things in terms of relevant information on certain players

Either that or he has brain damage from playing footy

Mitchel is a far better defensive half than pretty much the rest of the comp

Remember Mitch got tackle of the year only 2 years ago against the Melbourne captain in the finals ?

Mitchel and Dylan are both insanely physical and accurate tacklers

Joey was obviously good player but some things he says are ridiculous at times

    1. BDon

Moses has improved out of sight defensively over past 3-4 years. Sometimes he racks up a few misses but when blokes like Asofa-Solomona make a beeline for you at twice their normal velocity that’s going to happen. Even then Moses gets a lot of interruption type tackles where the support tackler nails the ball carrier. I can’t believe the number of commentators who mentioned his defence in negative terms over past couple of weeks. When I was 16 I could run like the wind, these blokes would still have me faster than Usain Bolt when I can barely stand up these days.

      1. Muz

Ppl also have a negative bias generally against parra players

If moses was at the rooster or panthers the media would hype him up as being the original Moses or Jesus himself

        It’s unfortunate but true

      2. sixties

Supporters know they can trust Moses to make nearly all of his tackles. Remember how we used to feel when it was Chris Sanders out there…

      1. Muz

Joey smokes dope and drinks and has said he battles mental health issues, probably got some issues from head knocks too he wasn’t a big player.

He probably has some memory recollection issues.

It hurt when I heard him saying that, because it’s been years now where even while he was at our club Mitchell was a very strong defender.

Mitchell is the best player at our club and I wouldn’t mind seeing him as our captain, if gutho is not able to keep playing at this level now with his seemingly sore knees or legs these days.

We are in a very bad period now, gutho looks to be not right, RCG looks flatter this year, paulo is a year older, I have a feeling the club may not to make some really big hard decisions or we will be stuck at the bottom for a long time.

There’s zero athleticism or speed in that team that’s playing atm appart from only:

moses, Dylan, and blaize (who is still learning)

We are Not fit enough or fast enough to play longer than 50 mins it looks like

  5. Tanky

You have maybe seen it but on Parramatta Facebook they have the video of Matt Arthur getting presented with his jersey
