The Tip Sheet – 2023 Ep 90: Are The Eels About To Get JAC-ked Up?

The Tip Sheet is also available on Spotify and iTunes!

The media whipped up a fan frenzy this week when news broke about the Eels showing serious intent in Josh Addo-Carr. The only caveat? It was a reported offer of a player swap between the Bulldogs’ flyer and Parramatta’s Ryan Matterson. Sixties, Forty20 and Clint rip right into the topic and plenty more as the off-season honestly fails to live up to its name!

From Addo-Carr to Papenhuyzen, the rumor drive keeps turning over. Again there are links to the Eels so the boys discuss the opportunities and risks involved with acquiring the speedster from the Storm.

Matt Arthur and Mahalia Murphy have both made headlines with the young dummy half inking a new deal while the NRLW star has shown serious guts and drive in the tv show ‘SAS’.

The NRL news cycle has been operating at full tilt. From horrifying medical issues for Dom Young and Karl Oloapu to a flurry to market moves and rumours including Manly’s insane offer to boom backrower Haumole Olakau’autu – The Tip Sheet covers it all!

Thanks again guys , always an interesting listen.

Couple or should there be a few questions/conundrum..

Recruitment interested and spoke to Billy Smith , who isn’t in the top 17 at the Roosters, we could offer a starting spot and he apparently stayed.

After the retirement of Hodgson and Davey, the club has 27 on the roster yet the media are insistent that it’s full.

Re the above, surely that provides space on the cap, currently suggestion is a player needs to be moved before the club can sign anyone, seems strange when the club makes the cap an integral control issue.

Again, we look to be moving into a season with the roster looking unbalanced with so few backline positions filled.

Why do we get so little information from the club, no leaks is fine, but it would be of interest to know things like the junior rep squads and players signed to development deals, other clubs provide that info.

Billy Smith would have been a good acquisition. I make it 28 on the roster now and I’d hope that there is some coin left in the cap to get a signing without a swap.
It’s hard to speculate on the player market given the media headlines can be manipulated by player agents or even the clubs themselves

The imbalances in the Eel’s back line is causing an imbalance in the fans. It seems that with the players everything is forgotten and nothing is forgiven.

I’d take JAC bit not at the expense of Matto (people need to get over the whole suspension/fine thing) But acquiring Paps, albeit with a lot of caution (both in terms of his recent injuries and moving Gutho), excites me more. Also the issue in 2023 wasn’t scoring points, it was defence.

I’m still not convinced Luai is worth $1mil plus. I know he will get it if he goes to open market but that reflects lack of available halves in the NRL. A great what if is would have Penrith won the GF is he stayed on the field?

Long term deals are just ridiculous. A young player may get 4-5 years. I can see that but anything longer is a risk both for the club and the player.

Re the Warriors, the NRL should be giving them some breaks. I do get the feeling the sacrifice the club made during COVID has been forgotten. I’d take Magic Round to New Zealand as well. It would be the least the NRL could do to thank the Warriors.

I would love to see Biden with Albo and PVL on the hill! All this elitist nonsense about having a hill, and no parking, long queues for both beverages and toilets plus stands that could kill you does not understand what rugba leg is all about! If PVL was serious about retro round then all the games would be played at Leichardt!

The Pasifika nations are integral to league’s futures. I’m more than happy for players to have multiple allegiances. This does open up a can of worms re SOO but I’m of the belief that SOO is anachronism whose tone has past. Though the self perpetuating inferiority complex Queensland have sustained over 40 years of myths about their place in the game is rather impressive.

Thanks gents for keeping me entertained while wander around Melbourne. A great listen.

What a reply Shaun, and thanks for listening. Really appreciate all of your takes. Can you imagine PVL or Albo entertaining dignitaries on the Leichhardt Oval hill! That would be a sight!

Agree with pretty much all of this.

I know things are never genuinely final as people can move within the season. But when will we likely know our final roster? End of November perhaps?

  3. Colin Hussey

What is a final roster? In all my years of following the eels, I doubt that I have seen a final roster and that’s not just with the eels rosters either.

I have watched games with ADC on the wing and while he makes some good runs and the like and scored some good tries, the reality is though that how good really is he when adds up his time in the match and how much he really puts in, when compared to other players?

I could name a couple of other high profile players that are in the similar situation as ADC, and they are able players but at what real livel?

    1. sixties

I think that JAC has suffered from two years at the Dogs. He was a weapon at both ends of the field at the Storm. His yardage work was very good despite him being lighter framed.

  4. Milo

Very good listening TCT and I have to admit Clint sounds like he has been schooled in Cambridge! Very knowledgeable with the cap etc fantastic.
Look I’d like Pap tbh honest and would take a punt with him if the medical was ok.
JAC – not as keen. To me as you said you wouldn’t swap Matto for him unless you had two players coming in. I’ve been critical of Matto and my point being he’s on v good coin and he should always be in the mix for best forward. He did have a better end of season. Addo Carr for me isn’t my first choice..,
Have enjoyed watching the Pacific games and particularly the smaller nations of Fiji / PNG. It’s great to watch
Thanks for the podcast and like others have said and also on the podcast Parra’s cap will be interesting to see what occurs over the course of the off season in terms of of / who we get and also let go.
As Forty said our team is getting older and the window will close if we don’t purchase well and in my view look at moving on some – that’s my own view
    here.
In terms of long term contracts…well we did it with Brown and I know there’s some club and player options but just imagine if it goes sour again..?
Manly have got to be kidding with that long contract for a non spine player. Good on him

    1. John Eel

Milo agree with your comment regarding moving a few on. I would be shocked if there isn’t a few players who have been advised that they don’t figure in the Eels long term plans. That would likely be players off contract next season 2024.

I would not think that Matto is one of those tapped on the shoulder.

      1. Milo

Yes John, Matto is a funny one as while i like his play and value, he needs to continue his consistent play and the suspension one has left some fans (me also) with a bitter taste. I hope he just plays well and continues on as we do have a few guys on v good $$$. I think all this speculation has come from C’bury and or managers.

  5. Hamsammich

For the NRLW next season I would like to see how a spine of 1. Tohi-Hiku 6. Church 7. Pearson/Beckett 13. Beckett/Pearson would go. I believe between Cherrington, Albert, Amiatu, and Asaua we’ll have the go forward to cover having an extra half in the spine. This gets the ball in the hands of our best players and our best ball players. Would give us a different shape to the rest of the comp too as if we’re in the middle of the field we can split it with 2 play makers either side of the ruck.

  6. John Eel

Is there any indication yet who the new NRLW coach will be?

Why is my name not permanently retained on the site now? Is it something I am doing wrong?

    1. Milo

I saw something about the coach being advertised JOhn…not sure where.
I als have to add my name each post. Maybe its a new security / site process?
