The Tip Sheet is also available on Spotify and iTunes!

There is zero doubt that the Parramatta Eels will be pulling out all stops on Saturday night as they look to spring an upset on the Melbourne Storm. TCT are similarly going above and beyond as The Tip Sheet channels Nathan Brown in somehow finding an extra gear this week and dropping the hottest preview you will find anywhere.

We aren’t kidding when we say hottest preview as a bombshell special guest joins Sixties and Forty20 as former Parramatta Eels CEO and all-around rugby league aficionado Bernie Gurr drops by for a truly comprehensive discussion of the 2020 season and the colossal matchup this week against the Melbourne Storm.

Gurr brings the full weight of his vast rugby league experience to the fore as he breaks down the imminent battle on Saturday night on a macro and micro level. As a bonus the fellas even get the fabled front-office operator to cast his eyes over the other three finals this weekend and give his verdict on who will progress to Week 2.

Finally, Sixties and Forty20 take their own agricultural hacks at breaking down where the game will be won and lost for the blue & gold. The talking heads close out the podcast by collectively issuing a challenge to fans to embrace the romance of the bizarre 2020 season and take a risk by daring to dream!

How insightful was Bernie and his depth of knowledge just amazing….an excellent addition to the podcast!

Listening to him and both of you guys has restored the confidence that I’d lost after I reading an earlier Roar article.

Both teams have big packs so the winner of that battle will go a long way to determining how the game unfolds. The eels will have to be patient and be switched of for the full 80 minutes, but with a fair share of ball and an even approach from the officials then maybe the third placed team can beat the second placed team?

Regardless of what happens they’ve earned the right to a second bite so the ride is still well from over.

    Go those eels!

Hi trapped, switched on yes, patient, not so sure, quick play the balls, off loads and keep momentum going, chancing our arm when we are in the right spot. We need to go thru them ,again with second phase play. You cannot beat the storm playing conservative, or letting them get you in a grinding match. Go eels

      1. sixties

Jonno, I thought that we were incredibly impatient when we played them in last years finals. Composure and aggressive play can be used in tandem. Icing chances on the back of aggressive play and offloads earned will carry Parra a long way.

Cheers trapped. Very privileged to have Bernie join us and obviously we used the opportunity to call on his wealth of knowledge not just for this game but for the ride through the finals.

While I have some bias I will say that was a great balanced appraisal of our team. This team, our club has come a long way. People in the media forget the terrible position our club was in on and off the field just 4 years ago and even on the field in 2018.

There are areas that could be exposed by the Storm but that is the same for every team in the finals. Can we not expose the Munster/ Lee defensive combo as much as they can our two Blake’s?

Bernie Gurr comes across as so knowledgeable and calm. I would love him to sit on the 360 or 100% Footy desk and respond to James Hooper, Buzz or Danny Weidler etc and there dribble with well supported and fair analysis.
I have never wanted my team to win as much as I do this week. I am not sure the mainstream media could handle it, they would look like fools.

Marata is a huge in for us. Especially as I don’t think big Nelson will start, ( I would love him too as that will make him work harder and I think it will hurt his impact) but I think he will come off the bench and we will need that middle who can go with him when we take either RCG or Junior off.

We must play footy but hold the ball and kick well. We cannot kick long to Ryan Papenhuyzen on the full. Keep the Storm from camping in our twenty in the first 20-25 minutes and we are a huge chance.

    1. Jonno

      True Shelley,
we should use the Brian Smith analogy with the Broncos, kick into touch and walk to the scrum, don’t rush, then up our game tempo with off loads and inside runs

      1. sixties

Jonno, that question of tempo is so relevant. Bernie mentioned it and it’s something that I’ve heard BA coach the spine about frequently over the years. Yes, the thing we seemed to regularly produce under Smith was that clever game plan against the Broncos.

Shelley, to say that Bernie loves his footy is a major understatement. A few of us had the privilege of Bernie’s company a number of times at Eels junior Reps and lower grades. Many a conversation analysing the games and the players – it was quite an education listening to such a learned man. Really pleased to have him join us for the previews.
As for Marata, as noted he is an important cog in the Eels middle machine – he’s a big factor in winning the middle against the Storm.

Hands down the best Rugby League interview this year on any media. Some of the most interesting and relevant statistics about the “new” game including the 6 again rule. Great job to all involved.

    1. Forty20 Post author

It was really interesting to hear a different opinion on the new rule sets after Sixties and I have railed against them over the last few weeks. Credit really has to go to Bernie mind you. A wonderful servant and student of the game!

When you interview someone as knowledgeable as Bernie, it’s easy to find the interview taking a path of its own. His answers end up generating different perspectives or deeper considerations that we have to explore.

  4. Eggman

That was great, first one I have listened to due to my crap old phone, but just got a new one and was so good I think I might listen to some I’ve missed. You’re right too much is never enough when it comes to Parra and it has been relatively quiet in the mainstream about us lately, unlike those amazing Panthers, did you know Brian Too bought a new stereo?fascinating stuff anyway yes last year was over before it began,as soon as rain was predicted our mojo was washed away like ….tears in the rain, sorry, but no rain predicted for Saturday hopefully we can hold those offloads, any mistakes will be punished. Thanks again.

    1. sixties

Thanks Eggman. Glad to have you onboard with The Tip Sheet. How good that Bernie will also be back for our next match – in two weeks time!!!

    1. sixties

Cheers Jonno. Bernie is a wealth of knowledge. Privileged to have him join us and thoroughly enjoyed his insights

  5. Tristan Parramatta to win

Great podcast boys !!! Wow !!! It’s not hard to see why Bernie was so highly recommended and sought after for the job with us. He possesses amazing in depth knowledge of not just our boys but the NRL as a whole. To rattle of stats from this year compared to the super league years was amazing !!! Why isn’t he coaching an NRL side ? He’d even be a very handy assistant coach with his eye for detail in my honest opinion. It was a real shame that he had to move on from the club, I would’ve loved to have seen him stay for a lot longer, but he got us well and truly on the road to recovery. Any chance we can get him back ? Bernie if you’re reading this I’d welcome you back any day of the week.
Again great podcast boys … as usual but then again everything you TCT boys put out is top notch.
Now to Saturday’s game … CARN PARRA !!!

    1. sixties

Thanks Tristan. There’s a few clubs that would benefit from Bernie helping them to turn their organisation around. The combination of administrative excellence and football pedigree and knowledge would have to be an asset for such clubs.

  6. John Eel

Sixties with regard to the move that Mitch and Will put on, my memory is that they scored off it twice.

Also my mail is that the move was instigated by Will

  7. DDay

That was fabulous. Bernie is surprisingly analytical in the football and makes sense, no wonder the Eels front office has been improved.
Thanks for organising this – I’m hopeful -go the eels
