Stats That Matta – Round 20, 2019: Eels Defeat Dragons

STATS THAT MATTA ROUND 20

Sunday, August 4th 2019, Netstrata Jubilee Stadium

Crowd: 9,645

EELS 12

(Tries: M. Sivo, D. Brown. Goals: M. Moses 2 from 3.)

Defeated

DRAGONS 4

(Tries: M. Ravalawa. Goals: G. Widdop 0 from 1.)

I’ll make this one quick and finish up Round 20.

I thought this was a good, controlled win. Though we made life a bit difficult for ourselves in the second half, we held out and showed resilience in keeping the Dragons at bay. Yes, they haven’t been playing great footy, but they still have quality players that can hurt you.

This was a very sound solid effort and shows we can grind.

There is a big shift in the minutes from Reed Mahoney.A rest of close to twenty minutes on either side of half time over the last two weeks has seen his average minutes drop towards 70 minutes. Tepai Moeroa received 16 minutes this week and one wonders whether he will hold his spot much longer.

Heat Maps

Hit Ups

Looking a little better than last weeks heat maps for our hit ups. Bit more yellow in the opposition half but I still think we can move that red area up a bit further. Get that extra bit of territory through forward momentum. That first stint from the starting props was the most effective.

Set Starts

We didn’t get many starts in the Dragons half which shows in the previous hit up map. Only two set starts in the Dragons 20 does show this was a tight game played between the 20 metre lines. But these games do show where we are at, as opposed to the big blow out scores which can give a false impression of the strengths and weaknesses.

Summary

So our past two games have been tight and grinding affairs which I think we can take more out of than beating an opponent by 30 plus.

The next few weeks will show how we are really going.

This Saturday should not be taken for granted. The game earlier this season delivered a win to the Knights and started them on a winning streak after 5 straight losses.

Then we play the Titans – we have only won twice in nine starts at Cbus and won 7 from 18 overall. Bulldogs and Broncos follow then ending with Manly at Bankwest which should see the biggest crowd ever for a 6pm Friday game.

We die hard blue and golds know they reality of playing poorly against sides we should beat comfortably.

These next few weeks could be uneasy.

Yours in Blue and Gold

Colmac

  1. DDay

Welcome back Colmac, I’ve been missing your analysis. The stats were closer than I’d thought (possession, missed tackles & errors very similar). Great to see 10 players >100m. Surprised that Gutho, Waka & Taka contributed such a high portion of the errors. A good controlled win it was, which we will take plenty out of.

  2. Rowdy

Thanks for the stats Colmac. They are always very informative of trends and performance of team and individuals. Unfortunately there is not a lot that one add beyond thank you.
