Parramatta Eels Junior Reps vs Central Coast Roosters – Round 1, 2019

The Junior Representative fixtures kick off today with the Eels Harold Matthews and S G Ball teams travelling away to Wyong’s (Kanwal) Morry Breen Oval to take on the Central Coast Roosters. The action kicks off with the Matts at midday.

It’s not a kind draw for the Eels when it comes to home and away, with only three home matches scheduled for each of the grades in a nine round competition. The Tarsha Gale girls will get four home games this year, whilst our newest teams, those entered in the Laurie Daley and Andrew Johns Cups, will get two matches at their home at McCredie Park, Guildford in a five round draw against regional teams.

Wherever possible, The Cumberland Throw will keep you updated via Forty’s renowned live blogs. Though Forty won’t be able to cover today’s away clash, we are fortunate to have our Central Coast correspondent, Milo, in attendance for this update post.

Whether you check in live, or read this as a match summary, this post kicks off our coverage of the Eels Junior Representative season. We’re sure it will be a positive one.

The scoring begins with a try to Parra down the right side. It was a simple try Malua’ula I think. Converted.
Score – 6-0 after about 10 minutes.

There’s a fair bit of dropped ball – and Parra have coughed it up again on a repeat set.
It’s warm conditions here at Wyong – 28 degrees and no breeze.

Great run down the left side off a scrum by the Parra backs.

Kalache shifted the ball well but the winger got tackled into touch 10 m from the try line.

Try to No 9 for the central coast on the right edge – simple one pass play from double penalties.

6 all.
Lots of dropped ball and plenty of penalties given

Try to Lewis near the posts – show and go from him.

Kick near posts for an Eels 12-6 lead.

Parra just have to hold the ball and limit errors and they could run away with the goodies like us running away with a tray of delicious pies from Kens humble pie shop at the Entrance.

Half time 12 to 6 to the Eels.

Second half.

Parra just lost the ball after the second tackle via a forward pass.

Parra are running to the Southern end. No breeze and bloody warm.

Parra drop the ball again on their next set. Poor ball control but the weather is not conducive to great league and with it being the first game….it’s still frustrating to watch

The Coast score out wide after a good play out the back. The try near the corner goes to the fullback.

12-10 to parra with conversion unsuccessful.

Two penalties to the coast allow them good field position inside the Parra 20.
Very concerned about some poor discipline from the Eels

Parra hold them out then get to their kick! Wel done boys…

Superb hit from parra winger Lealaiauloto jolts the ball from the coast.

Superb hit!

Oh no! A Shift to right sees the other winger lose possession! A Coast scrum in their 30 m.

Lost ball from coast 10 m from the parra line.

Some good defence but the heat is taking its toll on both teams.

Parra throw a silly pass from return kick only for ball to roll into touch

Frustrating to watch.

Parra have to only hold the ball and play out sets!!!!

About 15 to go.

Coast almost score in corner with an out the back play. The Winger loses the ball near the line
Very tight

Crazy stuff. Parra lose the ball in the play the ball again

A Coast scrum on parra 40.

This doesn’t look good!

If you keep opening the door, expect someone to walk in! The Coast score in the corner to take the lead.

14 to 12 with under 10 min left.

Big moment! Parra score after a lost ball. Try to Muagutitia.

18 to 14 with three to go.

Consecutive penalties to Parra from the kick off and the Eels will take a shot at goal to wind down the clock.

The kick is successful and it’s full time.

Eels 20 Central Coast 14.

(on a side note good to see about half a dozen boys I coached in Coast reps a couple of years back)

My best for Parra in a scrappy match:

3 – Muagutitia

2 – Malau’ula

1 – Kalache

The Coast half and fullback played well too.

S G Ball

Team List

1. Joshua Tuipulotu
2. Samuel Loizou
3. William Penisini
4. Penioni Tohi
5. Matthew Komolafe
6. Tevita Masima
7. Jakob Arthur
8. Sam Hughes
9. Tyler Field
10. David Hollis
11. Jayden Skinner
12. Trey Mooney (c)
13. Albert Etuale Faave
14. David Tui
15. Taylor Mauala
16. Uinitoni Mataele
17. Caleb Tohi
18. Peter Taateo

First Half

Loose ball sees scrum to Parra in 20 m zone early first half.

Hollis and Hughes looking strong.

Good take from Tuipolotu sees bomb defused well. ASIO would be proud.

Lost ball sees the coast bomb a try in the Corner
Play held up after Tuipolotu and coast player are down. Doesn’t look serious.

The Coast are held up twice over the line. Tyler Field did a superb job with one of those tackles.

Parra put up a poor kick on half way and the Coast are on the attack. Fortunately their kick goes long.

Here we go again. Hollis loses the ball on penalty tap.
The Coast have a scrum on their 20 m and a penalty soon follows.

Parra hold them out and have a scrum feed near their own line.

Accurate bomb by Arthur sees Lomolafe score in corner. Kick unsuccessful. 4 nil with 12 to go first half.

Ensuing scuffle after try sees ref talk to capt for ages!

After the kick off the Eels cop a mystifying loose ball call from ref!

Good defence in the middle from parra and the Coast throw a forward pass. Eels forwards looking strong.

Mataele is making an impression.

Parra spoil a couple of good opportunities.  It’s made worse as Parra blow another good chance after a forward tried to grubber and re gather

And the coast get a mandatory penalty to get out of half
Dejavu here then the Coast score a soft converted try. They lead 6 to 4, Two minutes from half time.

That’s half time with a 6 – 4 lead to the Central Coast.

Second Half

Seven minutes into the second half and we have no change to the score. The Coast are still leading 6 to 4.

Fifteen minutes in to the half and we still have no change to the half time score. This could be a case of the next scorer kicking away.

And it’s the Roosters who cross next for what could be the clincher. It’s now 10 to 4 with less than 15 to go.

Loizou converts the charging Hollis try for the Eels and the scores are level with around 6 minutes left!

Penisini might just have clinched it for the Eels with a try from a drop off play with two left on the clock. The conversion sees the Eels run out 16 to 10 winners.

Courtesy of a couple of observers, we have the following top 3.

3. Hollis

2. Hughes

1. Loizou

      No problem parrathruandthru
Was good to get to the game. Just apologies for not being able to stay longer. Family commitment

  1. John Eel

Milo I thought Sam Hughes was the best player on the field. Also thought Komolafe was good especially in the first half.

Tyler Field was very good so to the second rowers. Also Arthur’s kick to set up the first try.

Overall I thought it was a game they should have won comfortably but they made hard work of it.

    1. Milo

Hi John and thanks for that.
Just able to check now. Good win by the boys. I agree abt Hughes. The 16 on bench had superb punch at times in first half.
I had to leave half time.
Was great to watch the boys today.
Yes both teams should have won comfortably and I guess first match and warmth was a factor.

    2. Jake Ratz

We all watched the same game today.
Its nice to be positive but lets be honest for a second.!
Parra were woeful in both grades today. Discipline, Drop ball and mistakes were very un Parra like.!
Ball – Tyler field was very poor in hooker, His passing/Service was below par and if Parra persist with him at hooker then i am confused.
Both Hollis and Hugues have big wraps on them but their first half performances where unsatisfactory.
Credit to both boys there second half was better.
      Penisini, Tohi, were both good.
You’re right Parra where there own worst ennimies.

Parra need to fix some issues and if they persist with TJ, Aurthur and Field as our 6,7,and 9 then we are in for a very long year.!

So if Field’s service was poor, does that not impact the halves? Let’s be fair to Field too, he’s going through a positional switch. Also Arthur was the half in the Matts team that finished runner up to a monster Manly team in last year’s grand final, and if you watched that grand final you know that the turning point was the fullback’s injury. Arthur’s got some decent runs on the board, especially as a game manager. Perhaps the answer lies in a positional change for Field to his preferred 5/8 role.
I need to see more of this year’s Matts to offer an opinion, but I’ve seen quite a bit of the SG Ball players and won’t be as harsh after a round 1 win. The Eels did win today didn’t they? It’s is round 1 too. They’re a young team, with quite a few Matts graduates. They scrambled a win without playing the best. That can be a good sign.

Sixties I must have been watching a different game I thought Field’s ball work was good. However the standout for me was Sam Hughes. Roosters couldn’t contain him. Made a lot of good runs and kept getting the offload away. He set up the second try when he poured thru the middle and offloaded.

Love to know how many metres he and Hollis ran. There were a lot of good players out there and they will be better for the run.

          1. Jake Ratz

I guess its just a matter of opinion John. Iv watched both Hollis and Hughes play numerous times. It wasn’t so much what they did in the first half i was more the lack there of that they didnt do. I stand bye my comment regarding Field he was very very ordinary. His service was poor. Yes he is not a hooker. I think he is a runner of the ball and better suited to 5/8

        2. Jake Ratz

That’s a fair call. Prob a bit harsh on my behalf. I just had higher expectation and although we won left a bit disappointed. A positive sign was Hughes and Hollis better second half. Penisini was solid as was Caleb Tohi off the bench.
You’re right regarding the injury to Toupolupo was game changing injury in the GF.
Arthur is a good game manager, But Field although its a new position i feel needs to be in the halves for his running game. Where that leaves TJ or Arthur i have no idea and the same for the hooking role.
Fingers crossed its a better performance in the next few weeks.!

Apologies is i offended anyone. I sometimes speak without thinking which often gets me into trouble with my wife.

          1. sixties

Jake, no offence taken from me. We have differences of opinion and offer reasons here. You did the same. I don’t think you crossed any lines. With the junior reps I’m always considering their age and we also get some readership amongst the families. I think it’s a big thing for them to see their name in print being discussed. As they get older they’ll have to deal with the territory of being a player, but for now they’re still kids to me.

      2. Milo

Jake I see your point abt the errors and it frustrated me too. I’m glad they did win though and I guess it’s each to their own. I think the refs made the games both stop start particularly with a lot of penalties. I actually thought Field was ok. Anyway each to own.
What frustrated me was the amount of errors with ball in hand.

        1. Jake Ratz

Milo i agree. I’m just sometimes to opinionated. Fingers crossed the next few weeks. But i also agree with you’re comments above

      3. Hamsammich

The reason those 3 are playing is because Bailey Biondi-Odo will be playing 20’s, Charlie Murray is staying up to finish school and so is Jed Edwards. They would be our 6,7,9 if we were to put our best out there.

    1. Anonymous

I herd from a reliable source he and Parramatta parted ways. Unsure of the reasons but herd it was due to not meeting obligations and lack of commitment.

      1. Anonymous

That’s a shame! He showed real talent during the 2017 Matts season. Anyways good start to the year with a win in all 3 grades!! Best of luck to them next week away to the Steelers, who judging by the results, will be a very tough task.

  2. rowdy roddy

Great report Milo, I’m glad we were able to home over the top of our opponents in both games. This is the fitness and the mentality that we need to produce in the senior teams.

    1. John Eel

Rowdy I only seen the S G Ball and after a tight first half where it was fairly even I thought the Eels dominated most of the second half. The ball handling was very ordinary. On two or three occasions the Eels got over the line and lost possession. If they take those chances it could have been a cricket score.

These issues will sort themselves out as they get into the season.

      1. Bob jay

Id venture to say youngest lineup in sg ball comp , they will mould and grow as season progresses , its about identifying and nurturing our talent i thought , its a rung not the top of the ladder . Since weve made our juniors our priority again theres, brown , kafusi ,stefano, reedy ,salmon , parry, dunster ,stone ,shall i go on , pretty sure its all progessing to plan .

      2. Milo

Couldn’t agree more John. I saw first half of ball and it was tight and ball control and discipline was the key.

    2. Milo

Thanks Rowdy, it was great to watch on all truth and yes it was warm up here with no breeze.
The Matt’s always seemed to be able to score if they held the ball and this is what got them home in th end.
I was also impressed with the toughness of the coast team – they did v well.

        1. rowdy roddy

I’m a firm believer in kids learning to be “good winners and gracious losers”, therefore I agree with the integrity of giving the opposition credit as you said Sixties, I also am a fan of the consideration you mentioned above regarding our boys and their families. Being careful about how we critique teenagers is of paramount importance. I believe we could underestimate the negative impact it might have on them. The same as too much praise at a young age can be detrimental also.

You’ve created a good platform for comment on this post Milo, thanks again mate.

          1. Milo

Thanks Rowdy and Sixties; there was a bit of size difference particularly in the forwards and backs but having said this the coast used the ball (through the ruck at times turning parra around) and also shifted well to run us around as we would expect.
One boy for the coast (Elvis Opetaia) was huge and probably 6 foot. V big boy who matched the parra boys for size. His brother is also the boxer Jai who fought for in the Olympics for Aust.

          2. John Eel

Milo I thought the big number 8 for the Coast was damaging in the first half for 20 minutes. However not nearly as good when he came back in the second half .
