Post Game Grades – Round 25 vs Roosters

Parramatta_Eels_logo.svg  Parramatta Eels 10

 Sydney Roosters 44

The Good:
Season 2018 is over. For I am better off without you, Season 2018; for I have hated thee with the white hot fury of a thousand suns.

The Bad:
I saw someone on Twitter suggest that other than the Manly game, tonight was the Eels’ worst performance of 2018. I think last week’s non-effort against the Cowboys is a pretty good shout, but nonetheless other than a few exceptions (Hayne, Mannah, Gowie) it was pretty poor tonight, in every way.

We look out of breath, out of sync, out of ideas and out enthused. You’d be out of your mind to suggest there’s only one issue, and as a fanbase we need to do away with these Hail Mary, one problem theories and prepare for this review to pretty much start us from scratch. We’re miles from where we should be, but the good news is that one week is a long time in Rugby League, and an offseason can be a lifetime. It all goes back to zero in 2019, and I for one look forward with anticipation (because looking back straight up sucks).

X-Factor:
I thought the refs did a pretty good job tonight. Good for you guys.

The Eels completed at 87%, had only 20 seconds less time than the Roosters in the opposition 20, and won 7 scrums to 5. We also lost by the game by 34 points.

The MVP:
Eels Members who once again broke the membership record in the worst season of Blue & Gold Rugby League in recent memory.

1- Jarryd Hayne

Fullback, Parramatta Eels

Well at least Jazz played well. Jarryd’s 12 runs for 150 metres and 6 tackle breaks is just another reason to sign him for 2019. This can’t be how he leaves the NRL, it just can’t.

2- Bevan French

Right Wing, Parramatta Eels

Thank goodness! I thought for a minute Bevan would go a whole game without being bundled into touch.

3- Michael Jennings

Right Centre, Parramatta Eels

The Jet got sin binned to reduce the Eels to 11 men against the minor premiers, with cameras then showing him overcome with emotion in the sheds. To be clear, Jennings didn’t play very well tonight, but I can’t help but respect his show of emotion in letting his team down. Get hungry, get focused and get back to being a net positive, Jet.

4- Clint Gutherson (c)

Left Centre, Parramatta Eels

Good grief it’s been a rough induction for the young captain. Tomorrow is a new day Season 2019 is a new year. As for tonight, his 15 runs for 129 metres shows he is still very much putting in.

5- George Jennings

Left Wing, Parramatta Eels

Lord Byron once said “Adversity is the first path to truth”, and the truth has not been pretty for Gennings in recent weeks.

Replace “Bush” with “Jennings”, and “black people” with “defence”.

Well, at least he ran for 120 metres, I guess.

6- Corey Norman

Five-Eighth, Parramatta Eels

That game surely put the final nail in the Moses/Norman halves combination coffin. They looked like strangers out there tonight, or jilted ex-lovers. I think now the dream scenario is that a team desperate for a half just offers us some sort of player swap, because I cannot see anyone shelling out for either of them.

All of this would be much less painful and/or confusing if they weren’t so good together last year. Last year they were like Forrest Gump and Jenny, like peas and carrots. This year Mitch and Corey have mixed like oil and water, and as a result our once hopeful 2018 has turned into a full blown environmental disaster.

7- Mitch Moses

Halfback, Parramatta Eels

Season 2017 could barely be more polar opposite for Mitchell Moses than the foul smelling trash form he’s dished up this year. With tonight’s contribution, Mitch has only had one more try than he has had sin bins in Season 2018.

After demolishing the Dragons in the 7 jersey, the subsequent month of inconsistent form from our very own M&M has left fans once again asking “Will the real Mitch Moses please stand up?

8- Siosaia Vave

Prop, Parramatta Eels

2018 was a mixed bag for Siosaia, but tonight wasn’t the sort of treat that’s going to earn him another contract with the Blue & Gold. His 8 runs for 59 metres left me deeply unsatisfied.

9- Reed Mahoney

Hooker, Parramatta Eels

Is it too early to declare Reed Mahoney the best thing about 2018? His clever kicks when our halves were without a clue and 43 tackles suggest so, while his 3 missed tackles and 2 conceded penalties suggest I should hold off for now.

10- Tim Mannah (c)

Prop, Parramatta Eels

Now JT has retired, let’s dedicate all our energies into the celebrations of Tim Mannah’s career in the lead up to his retirement in 2024. Mannah’s 13 runs for 130 metres, tackle break and 40 tackle performance probably tie him with his best mate Jarryd for best on ground.

11- Marata Niukore

Back Row, Parramatta Eels

Definitely the best Rugby League player named “Marata” I’ve ever seen. Crunch’s waxy surface and low rate of cuticular transpiration helps him continue to thrive despite the current drought conditions.

12- Brad Takairangi

Back Row, Parramatta Eels

Over the last 12 months, Brad Takairangi has transformed from centre to edge forward utility. I’ll be honest, it didn’t go all that great.

13- Tepai Moeroa

Lock, Parramatta Eels

Personally, I think it’s a little crazy that this is now Tepai’s 5th year in the top grade and we are still waiting to cash in on his potential.

Interchange

14- Jaeman Salmon

Interchange, Parramatta Eels

I still wonder what Jaeman’s best position is, but you can’t fault his effort or potential. He only had limited minutes tonight but you just know he’ll come good, wherever he plays.

15- Kane Evans

Interchange, Parramatta Eels

Won’t somebody please think of the children?

16- David Gower

Interchange, Parramatta Eels

Miss me with your “Octogenarians shouldn’t play professional Rugby League” takes. Dr Gower is really taking it to Father Time.

How about the turn of pace (or sniper shot on Boyd Cordner) to put Jarryd Hayne away? Gower’s 7 runs for 71 metres was one of the few bright spots for the Blue & Gold tonight, and I for one hope we see him in those colours again in 2019.

17- Oregon Kaufusi

Interchange, Parramatta Eels

It can only bode well for 2019 that our poor season has led to the accelerated development of blokes like Oregon “The Gun” Kaufusi. His 11 hit ups for 90 metres and 26 tackles are the early makings of a promising first grade career for Big Country.

Now scroll back up and read the first word of every player’s comment, from 1 down to 17…

Precisely.

I think you are very generous on a lot of them mitch, Mahoney’s was harsh, although you look at the others and it’s one of the better scores.

Mjenning is awful, dunno what he needs but it needs to be adressed.

Moses is a myth, need to signed a 7 quick smart or the same will come next season unfortunately

    1. mitch Post author

Wait, so if Reed’s was one of the better scores, was I too generous or too harsh? I’m pretty confused what your angle is, not unlike the real Paul Kent.

I see what you did there, you’re a genius. Well played.

  2. Michael Formosa

The Good – This site. I’ve enjoyed coming on here and reading everything from Pre Season training to after game grades. Well done to everyone involved.
Juniors – see some talent coming through again is very pleasing.

The Bad – This team. I hate to quote Gus but this is spot on.
“They’ve just got players I don’t think give value for money or care enough about their football.”

The ugly- This Club. There were some very big mistakes in the off season involving some assistant coaches, and training leaving or being let go and not replaced. I believe it was the club trying to cut cost to the football department.
BA – took over while we were last and now 5 years on we are back to last. Very very lucky to survive this season but no chance of surviving if we don’t start well on 2019.
Recruitment- Peter Sharp. I would put BA and Sharp in a room and put up on a board everyone we have recruited in their time and asked what were they thinking and how it’s turned out because we need to start getting this right.

Well done to everyone who contributes to this site and here’s to a better season next year.

    1. mitch Post author

Thanks Michael, appreciate your support mate. Where to from here regarding said players though? If you’re BA, you’ve got a salary cap to manage, what do you do from here?

  3. Offside

Well done on doing these grades tough job with this shite.

Now at the beginning of this season when we locked in our spoon about rd4 i got crucified here for bagging out BA i stand by it i hope this review or before then leads to his joining the centrelink line.

    2019 has some big questions
    Who will be coach?
What do we do with gutho?
    Will hayne be here?
Will corey or bev or moses be here?
How quickly can Kidwells defensive up and in create space outside to allow tries out wide. Style be replaced with i don’t know anything.
And will for the love of god can we get actual assistant coaches not hacks like Joe Grima and Steve Murphy.

This club is at a very dark point with not much if any light at the end of the tunnel

  4. Parastew

I have one blue and gold eye, I bleed the blood of an eel and I am ashamed. For the first time I left the game before the full time whistle. I heard the roar of the roosters last try from outside the stadium, I was almost home at full time. It is the 21st anniversary of declaring next season but as always in 6 months I will be at the game I will be yelling ‘Come on boys’ as they leave the tunnel for the field. 2018 is forgotten 2019 hope is starting to swell. Next year, yes next year I will be strong we will be strong I will not stop supporting the mighty eels, I will make every game to the final whistle win lose or draw. That is enough sentimentality from me bring on next season I am ready!

  5. Real_HN

That’s what’s been so frustrating about 2018.. The team has performed poorly so consistently this year it’s been easy to be angry and disappointed but then you see the players reaction to losses and errors like Jenko reaction today it’s been heartbreaking really that these players are trying their guts out but it’s just hasn’t been good enough… Hard pill to swallow.
Anyways I agree Norman/Mosses combination has run its course and that’s sad especially with all the hype 2017 brought… Hope 2019 is better back in PARRAdise for double the membership cost which is ridiculous.

  6. West Coast Eel

Tough season. Agree with the MVP. The members and fans keep sticking with this team. We take the losses harder than most players. Hayne cops a lot of undeserved crap, but I hope he stays for another year or two. We’ve got some good juniors, a couple of decent signings (hopefully a few more), who knows what next year will bring. I can’t see it improving much, but maybe, just maybe they’ll surprise us in 2019. It’s a loooong off season.

    1. mitch Post author

I was certainly surprised about our 2018 result, hopefully it goes the other way in 2019. Thanks for your contributions and comments this year mate, appreciate you reading.

  7. Joshuatheeels

Kaufusi and Mahoney were great, they were B’s!! Interestingly it was 3 tries to 2 when in was 13 on 13!! Effort was better then the result indicated!! But still a horrible year!!

    1. mitch Post author

You thought Kaufusi and Mahoney went as well as Jarryd and Mannah? Great point regarding the 13 on 13 stats Josh. Appreciate you reading nonetheless.

  8. The rev aka Snedden.

Such a poor finish to the season mitch. 44 from the chooks n cows not a good sign.

On a better note new stadium n new young up n commers ready to play a part in our future …let’s hope it’s a bright one at that.

Kaufusi, Mahoney , marata , salmon n hopfully stone will be playing a lot more NRL next year.

On tonight’s game Hayne was good as was gower n Timmy.
The rest well there’s 6 months of hard work to get thru.

New yr new attitude new players new stadium.

God bless you all until next year #eels4life#

      1. The rev aka Snedden.

Thank guys you are awesome n were great to me in my time of need in June with the passing of my late dear mother. God bless u all.

      1. Anonymous

Well, we literally can’t go any further backwards. But I struggle to see them making a big difference in a team that looks so rudderless.

        1. mitch Post author

Yeah as you can tell from my writing above, I’m very concerned about the halves and our ability to execute in the attacking 20.

          1. Poppa

The concern should not be about the halves, they are better than that Mitch, the concern is why do you need to be concerned that two very good players can’t get their act together. I suggest (with respect) you are not being honest with what you are seeing.

          2. mitch Post author

I am being honest mate, we just happen to disagree. All good though, we both want what’s best for the Eels.

      2. Poppa

Needed to come in somewhere and this slots with next year as well. Tonight’s performance was worse than the game against Manly, the reason being these guys have been together for this long and had one game! to get through.
Last week against the cows we had a dig, possession and refereeing made that a mission impossible.
Last night we had even stats, a not at full strength side against us (admittantly) our second rate forwards were down to a third level in the absence of Alvaro, Brown,Mau and Terepo….yes it makes a difference.
Now what disappoints me more than the players is BA’s performance in terms of approach….I dont care if Moses and Norman take up dualling pistols why they are not on the field, on the field they are professionals, why cant BA knock that into them?…..Salmon could have started and Norms on Gennings wing….no imagination or understanding of the game, defensive lapses by individuals….it is the first time I can say there is on field evidence that BA had lost the room.
I am not calling for his head, I have defended all season whilst perceiving the weaknesses but last night left me cold. So cold it was a corpse….no life support!
Someone needs to be talking to him like he needs to be talking to the players…..I saw Hayne doing more talking than BA. I did not think this season could end worse that what we had experienced this year….I don’t how but they made it so much worse with that ending…..I am pisssed off big time as against just being disappointed.
        My apologies for venting!

  9. The rev aka Snedden.

Brother Mitch from all the other eels websites I see a lot of ppl asking for brads sacking. I will not judge a guy on 1 poor season.

4th last year the year b4 if it wasn’t for the cap we make the top 8 if not top 4.

I can see a bright future in 2019.

Just need stone n kaufusi to eat out with JP when he gets back from Canberra.

On signing – I don’t think we are done with signings I feel there might be 1or 2 more big names to come along with JP , lane , ferguson n the Penrith Fijian we signed siko or what ever his name is.

    #Eels4life#

    1. Colin Hussey

Rev, I join with you for next season, but to me the off season and news of who will be with us and who goes is of paramount interest, likewise the results of the review.

I certainly hope that we will see a decent halves combo next year, with players who want to play and have the abilities to lead this club along with every other player who wants to stay and play, & I mean play RL not as if they are looking for lost marbles.

    2. mitch Post author

Good to see your passion, even though people will disagree. Next year is certainly last chance saloon for a lot of people at the Eels. Thanks for reading Rev.

      1. The rev aka Snedden.

Yes true about the last chance salon Mitch n none other then coach BA. Lets hope tis year was just a blimp on the radar.

  10. Colin Hussey

I thought last night was great!!!!! Great this rotten season is over and the weekly pain can now heal, with the hope that the scabs and scars will heal in time for 2019.

For the team here on TCT thanks for the reports and like true eels supporters have at least been able to say things about a team that has been worse than poor, without laying the boot in like found elsewhere, I oft wonder if the players read some of the bile coming out as to why would they want to play for such supporters, but seems the numbers of times the boots have sunk into them may well have totally numbed their pain and they play numb, and those who are real supporters are the ones that hurt the most.

I watched last nights game and prior to the two bins thought they were doing not too bad, but they decidedly lacked any direction from the halves, especially the #7, Moses was pathetic in my mind, and when the cameras focused on him after each blooper of a kick he simply brushed the hair off his forehead and walked away with an emotionless face. Norms seemed to do a few things better but not much.

Speaking of Norms, in this mornings Sun Herald, Danny Weilder;s column has an article on him, and how he and Moses have been not got on all year, Norms has not wanted to attend training, the only thing basically keeping him here is the $900,000+ money he is on and no club will pay that for him. Out of the two of them, I would like to see Moses go, its now understandable why Wests were prepared to let him go.

I saw the bit with MJ weeping in the sheds, & I feel for him but really how many eels supporters have wept over his terrible season, an international player he was and I think he was a NRL player but not sure if he still is. Sadly his younger brother who was showing some form, has also shown he is not an NRL player with his poor decisions.

For me, the next stage in season 2018, is the eels off season in Bali, I wonder if the volcanoe will erupt in anger of them attending, but maybe it could be a good sign that they too need to really erupt as players going forward, to get some of that erupted fire in their belly’s.

OUtside of that there are two things outside of the disappointments that I like, firstly its the showing of the young players who have debuted late this season, Kafusi in particular has shown that he is ready for the top side consistently. The other thing is the report that comes out from the review.

I sincerely hope that review does not hold back and it is released in full, at least the summary of their findings as well as their recommendations If the recommendations are .enacted on and implemented in full then this season has not been wasted. Likewise I believe all eels supporters are entitled to have the results made know to them after enduring this season.

A quick browse through the playing roster shows for me at least 10 players, the number that BA said would be moved on at seasons end be they on contract or off contract really sets the scene for a new direction, and for me ten players going would be fine, some others who are borderline may stay but who knows.

Farewell season 2018, glad you are finished, and only a few small thanks for the memories.

    1. Ray

Heys guys , first post,Just wanted to say a big thank you to sixties on company senjoyed all your posts alll year even though it’s been a horrible season absolutely shattered I was one of those silly ones who went out there last night and totally regret it,As for 2019 please CT throw can we talk about possible recruits which we don’t do it on the site!! Parra for ever

      1. mitch Post author

Hey Ray, thanks for the suggestion mate. I feel a round table post about “what do we need to do in 2019?” coming on. Appreciate you reading.

  11. Glenn

Could this be done in a different format next year please? All I and a few others get is a large picture of the player and the comments disappear on the right hand side. The only advantage this year is that our performance has been shit so not been able to read any disappointing reviews.

What we need next year is a whole new mindset and overhaul along with new players. We are weak mentally and need someone to toughen us up, our defence is shit and edge defence diabolical and our attack is shit. Oh and our coach is shit also which I’ll highlight below.

For too long we’ve had small forwards fighting against giants, unfortunately in this scenario Goliath triumphs over David, and our performance this year reflects that! Our stubborn refusal NOT to kick goals when awarded penalties has cost us a win in 2-3 games this year and directly got us the spoon. Both these are imo part of BAs master plan and this is the reason BA MUST go. He has no vision, is reactive and not proactive, refuses to drop poor performing players and has no game plan, at least not one that will win us more games than we lose.

    1. mitch Post author

Thanks for your feedback Glenn, the mobile view on Apple devices seems fine? What device are you using? I guess there’s a balance to trying to come up with a design that works for the most amount of people.

      1. Colin Hussey

Mitch I have the same problem when using Internet explorer, only see the piccies but no comments, however opening in Mozilla/Firefox all ok.

      2. DDay

Hi Mitch – the Internet Explorer browser screws up the format of your gradings – so I view in Chrome & it is fine

  12. Rocket

I don’t know what’s wrong with our defence. We’re always beaten on the outside even when 13 on 13. Why not try to hold our line and slide across.
Two things I’ll remember from last night both involved Tim Mannah. Running across and trying to cut off another break down our edge and sprinting into the in goal to stop try being scored closer to the post.

    1. Offside

Whats wrong is Kidwell came along and we started the up and in approch if you notice from when he started we started giving space outwide and compressing in and it simply doesn’t work didn’t work when he was at the tigers either

  13. BDO

Mitch, the 4 rookies at C+ – didn’t see them doing much wrong other than being on the field with a struggling team. The team is just not on the same page. The yelp we gave against St George showed that when things go our way we have the ability to perform well, but the mix of skill, physical and mental abilities required to compete at top level is in the hit or miss world( even allowing for the injured players). The start again concept is appealing.

    1. mitch Post author

Yeah I generally try not to give too many positive grades when we’re as collectively poor as we were last night. I had Hayne Mannah on the top rung, Gowie next down and then the rookies and others the next rung down.

I thought the rooks were pretty good though, not much wrong (Reed with both the strongest and weakest moments)

  14. Anonymous

Thanks TCT for your work and tireless hours; great site and its to be applauded. I have nothing to say about the game; hurts too much about the season.
Pressure coming from rd 1 in 2019 for all and sundry.
Head o/seas next weekend and its been a tough week here personally, and we hope to read some comments about reviews, signings and more later in the yr.

    1. mitch Post author

We’ll do our best. Thanks for reading mate, it’s a labour of love, although admittedly a bit more labour intensive this season.

  15. Pete

The phrase men v boys was used last night. It could have been desire to win compared to ‘nothing to play for’. I think BA did a great job last year, this year I give him a fail. 6 wins and a wooden spoon is unacceptable! Somebody needs to be accountable, will it be the players off contact or the coach?
    Failure should not be rewarded.

    1. Colin Hussey

Pete, I would suggest every coach whose team did not get to the finals are actually fails as far as coaching is concerned. Its very easy for us to sit back and lay our assessments on the coach and the team without any insight into what has gone on and why things are as they are.

In BA, I see a coach who is dedicated to his job, his dedication to the players, and all around, perhaps he is too dedicated and has taken the primary blame on himself and publicly said that he is to blame. That said and his acceptance of the blame is fine but to me there are players in the team that also need to accept the blame for their roles and lack of desire throughout the year, they are the ones who train together and in interviews say all luvly stuff and how everyone’s pulling together, but come game day, that is far from the facts.

There are personal ego’s alive in the team and one in the article by Danny Weidler in this Mornings SMH tells that straight, but throughout the year both the players mentioned all rubbished anything like what was said in the rumoured media.

The coach and his staff can do all they can, prepare and plan, give the directions to the players, but they are not on the field and how gutted must they feel when they see their team blatantly ignoring what was planned and trained for in the preceding week. To me all involved need to examine themselves in regard to the season and their participation and performances throughout it. The blame is not on one person.

      1. Anonymous

Well said colin, get ready for the clean out that has to happen roster wise and the addition of support staff that has been neglected and then i will make decisions re the coach .

        1. Colin Hussey

Anon, as I said in the first reply on this blog, the review and its completion, along with the findings and recommendations will go a long way towards the success or otherwise of next year.

I had a look at the list of players both off contract and those still on contract for next year, also for the following year, and as I recollect BA saying that 10 players will be moved on along with some who are contracted to the club, end of this year. A rough go through of the 2 year lists shows 10 players at least who will be gone, and possibly end of this year.

One thing that the last read I did of a bit of news as to where the review was at is that all the players, coaches and other staff have been interviewed, and I for one would love to see the results of the interviews, no doubt nothing will be made public in that regard but I am sure that it will make for interesting reading in the summary.

Support staff are critical for the going forward and in that area, BA this year has not had that aspect really, and it has showed.

          1. Big Derek

Was really disappointed to hear BA state that the staff were in place to turn things around. If anything was obvious, it was that the staff under BA should be refreshed a it has been obvious that it’s not working.
As Gasnier said we allow the most tries with players going in untouched, and last night as testament to that.
New assistants will at least bring new voices and hopefully a fresh approach. What we have seen and been subjected to this year calls for a clean out of support and conditioning staff at a minimum. Loyalty should not be seen as a strength through what we have endured from the first to last game.

          2. Colin Hussey

BD, not totally in disagreement regarding the support staff, thing is that the new fellow Jiminez I think has helped the team and since his arrival there has been a better performance from the eels.

While our defence has been shown up, the aspect that we played with 12 men for a 1/4 of the match on Saturday night against the likely premiers with the majority of the points scored in the 2nd half with the man short, considering that Manly- Gold Coast and Newcastle had worse defence than the eels, also the worst attack, just a bit worse than Wests, showed that others were nearly as poor as the eels. That is not excusing the terrible team plays from a couple of them,

When we talk of effort and the running of the team, I my mind looks to the issues that Manly has had, especially the punting of Jackson Hastings, and his eventual move to SL, if our problems have been caused by the two halves that played on Saturday night according to the media and rumours through the year, I would think that the eels would have a justified position in doing the same with at least one of the protagonists, and say to them that if they want to stay then earn your contract or you will be in ISP for the year, or another club or SL.

If all the players have been interviewed by those in charge of the review and players identify where the problems are, then no good keeping a rotting apple in the barrel. As for loyalty they all have to learn that its a two way street rather than just one and treated as a highway to the bank account.

      2. Anonymous

Colin read the lurker about boom forward david fifita knocked back by bloody board members , thatl will give you a good idea what the coaches are putting up with

  16. MAX

Whilst this has been a disappointing year, the staff of the Cumberland throw have made the season somewhat enjoyable. Thank you for your efforts.
Having been in and around the game for a long time, I do think BA needs to go, I hate thinking it but we need a real fresh approach.
THANKS CT, you have done an awesome job through dire circumstances!

Thanks for another clever review Mitch, as always I live your work.
I’m sure there will be a lot of reflection over the off season. Let’s hope we come back with some new defensive strategy, energy and a rethink on the player size/skill approach.
BA was/is known as a coach the players want to work under. He obviously needs some good people around him and some resources. I hope the review brings him what we need.

Reckon BA wants and expects big changes as we do, especially in admin trouser , god knows the front office has been a basket case for his whole tenure but the comments of the new chairman seemed have direction and common sense .

Yeah I like the cut of his jib. Let’s hope BA can move on some of our poor performing players and maybe even land a big fish.

Mitch, thanks for your classic reviews and comments all season. Sadly our team did not meet their own or our expectations and it was a tough year to be a member. Hopefully the new stadium, in April 2019, will give us the platform on which we can perform in 2019.
Our season is over bring on 2019.
