Stat Attack Review – Round 21: Eels Defeat Titans

EELS – 28 (Tries: T. Mannah, J. Hayne, G. Jennings, B. French, C. Norman. Goals: M. Moses 4 from 5)

Defeat

TITANS – 12 (Tries: A. Don (2), P. Sami. Goals: M. Gordon 0 from 3)

@ ANZ Stadium, Sydney

Crowd: 6,158

That was a marvellous effort that even if it wasn’t a great game of footy. The most pleasing aspect was seeing an attacking Eels side for a change.

Tim Mannah gets off the nudie run, Gutho on fire, a roaming Hayne, all these highlights brought about an Eels win and lifted the spirits.

It was also good to see Kane Evans finally produce what he was brought to the club for.

Of course there’s no need for more accolades for Nathan Brown. What a machine!

There’s also no point in saying ‘Where has this been all season?” It’s just a futile statement and angers up the blood even more. What’s done is done and we just need to bring back pride in the Blue and Gold jersey for the remainder of the season.

So let’s look at the stats that matter to Parramatta.

We were nearly the perfect disciplined side in the first half, and looked what happened? We piled on 22 points in a great first half.

Then discipline mustn’t have passed the HIA test and stayed in the sheds because our second half was very poor. Such a shame after a great first half. Perhaps a top 4 opponent would have towelled us up just like in the Souths game last week. Fortunately we weren’t punished for our lack of discipline.

It’s never easy to convert a win with 46% possession in the second half, especially when you also have a player sent to the sin bin, but thankfully Mitchell Moses finally came good with important line-finders late in the game which allowed for the Eels defence to settle.

Hit Ups

Not too bad in this game. Some hit ups in the Titans 20 metre area does look a lot better than previous weeks.

Set Starts

Some quality territory for the Eels this time around saw us take a commanding lead.

I was impressed with the service provided by Reed “Cash” Mahoney. He didn’t over play his hand and recorded no forward passes from dummy half which was brilliant. There had been question marks over whether he could produce a full 80 minute performance but the youngster delivered in spades.

Final Thoughts

It was great to see a dominant Eels side once again. I said in my last post that this game could be our last win of the season with our run home, but with the way the Dragons have fallen away over the last few weeks, an Eels upset is definitely on the cards. It took nearly 80 minutes for the Dragons to haul the Eels in in their recent encounter in Wollongong, so the form would suggest that it could be another close encounter.

All we ask for is the team to play consistent footy. If we fall away again then last week means nothing.

So, hopefully everyone can heed the call of Brad Arthur and get out to ANZ on Saturday night to support the boys in Blue and Gold.

I have a feeling it will be well worth it.

Yours in Blue and Gold.

Colmac

We really need to stop giving away penalties. They almost cost us the game again on Saturday. Is it a fitness issue or mental fatigue, or are they trying too hard and pushing the boundaries?

Thanks Colmac, always look forward to your stats. The penalty count thing is just a square up – it seems to happen regularly. Lets hope for the consistency thing rather than the last win for the season thing you mention.
