Team List Tuesday – Little Leagues Edition

Intrust Super Premiership Team List

The Wentworthville Magpies were comprehensively walloped last week at the hands of the Newtown Jets are will be desperately looking to bounce back as they travel to New Zealand to face the Warriors. Wenty’s finals aspirations are currently being held together by threads with a 4-pt gulf separating them from the 8th placed Canterbury Bulldogs and they will need to upset the 5th placed Warriors if they are to ignite any sort of charge to the post-season.

While the NRL squad has the week off following their heart-breaking loss to the St George Illawarra Dragons, there is no rest for Will Smith. Maligned, and fairly so really, as the catalyst for the last-gasp loss to the Dragons, Smith now lines up alongside the talented Jaeman Salmon in the halves.

There is little new to report otherwise though. The Magpies field a strong front-row on paper with seasoned NRL players in Kane Evans, Kaysa Pritchard and Suaia Matagi but on-field form said otherwise. If the Magpies are to spring a massive upset there is no doubt that their high-profile forwards will need to finally step up to the plate.

The usual spread of talent has been named for the trip to the land of the long white cloud so look for the likes of Dylan BrownJohn FonuaTui Afualo and Stefano Utoikamanu to spearhead the assault on the Kiwis on Saturday.

I am surprised to see Dane Aukafolau on the wing, is this where he has been playing of late?

Also I assume Mahoney and Kaufusi are being rested for U20’s Origin

John Akafolau was switched to the wing last Saturday in the terrible performance by the ISP team. To me only around 4 were doing much, I would hate to think what the score would have been like without the defensive effort from Kaysa. Greg L is a big concern in defence as he seems to back away.

Thanks Colin I did not see the game. After looking at the final scores I am not sure that I wanted to. I definitely feel that a number of these players have probably thrown in the towel knowing they will not be around 2019. Very disappointing.

I had been looking forward to the game, as that match should they have won could have helped keep them in the finals race, but watching the way the Jets played with a very open attacking style of game with offloads aplenty, Wenty had no idea, Greg L scored early and not a bad effort but he backed away from tackles, also why Aka was put to the wing, didn’t help much though.

The big players Faaingi was slow and lethargic, Evans not up to the standard, Stromquist another big unit going nowhere. The commentators also said that Pritchard was the best player in the Wenty outfit towards the end of the game and without him I believe , the Jets could have put another 20+ on us. Kaysa chased down one of the jets players for more than 50metres to prevent a try only to see the jets score of the next play as the wenty team was still getting back on side.

Jennings in the backs next match?, well he should fit in well with his ex chooks mate in Evans who had a few fair runs but stopped at the defence as didn’t want to be tackled hard. A very soft player even in reserves.

          1. John Eel

The aim is to win the NRL not the ISP but that effort seems bitterly disapointing

I watched a little of the Fiji game and I thought Faingaa was disappointing in that game from the little bit I seen

          2. colin hussey

John, I agree the aim is to win the NRL, thing is though if the players underneath are not putting in enough to provide pressure on the NRL team, then what happens when injuries come into play?

We do need a strong reserve team that has enough players in it that can readily slot into the top side when injury or suspension takes place, also provide players to the NRL as others retire from above.

          3. John Eel

Colin have the Storm ever won the ISP? Having said that they always seem to be able to come up with able replacements as needed

          4. colin hussey

John, do they have a team in an ISP comp? They have a younger team playing somewhere but with Melbourne having so many RL teams to pick players from, they really just need good scouts to pick the eyes out of other states teams, and of course pay them with no cap problems.

          5. John Eel

They have a team in Qld, ISP,Sunshine coast maybe. Also they are looking for a team in Sydney as well. I reckon that if the Eels ever walked away from Wenty they would be in like Flynn. They tried to cut a deal with the Jets for 2019 but Sharks resigned again.

John, Faingaa is a boy playing his first few games against men to prepare him and test his fortitude. At this stage of his career development we should not expect too much of him especially playing in a losing team last week with his fellow forwards going backwards.

          7. colin hussey

Faaingaa has played well in his short international matches, and so far the 20’s and similar comps, he is a big unit and needs to watch his weight, if he can keep the weight down and lift his motor for the rest of the year in ISP, then see how he goes, at this stage not sure how long he could stay on the paddock at a higher level.

Where is Ray Stone? I noticed he wasn’t picked in our last game and he wasn’t on the injury list. Are we losing him

    1. The Badger

Why would that stop them playing him? Keppie is going to Manly but they still keep developing him for their use.
      Work that out!

  3. John Eel

In the “Eels in the News” story Knights miss out on Fergusson they talk about M Jennings taking up his option for an extension. Some are reporting it as a 1 yr option others saying it includes 2020 season. Which is correct?

    1. colin hussey

Understand it to be 2 years, the original announcement was that he had signed for 4yrs, no mention of the option at the time though.

I have not seen any games in full only some highlights; the combination of mixed teams; young players and some not being consistent seems an issue; along with the Wenty / Parra partnership which Sixties highlighted so well previously; i do not know how they train as a group as some i think are on fulltime contracts and others not. This all needs to be reviewed as per the internal review.
    Yes we want them to be putting pressure on NRL as well as giving the younger ones a go;
is it me or has the NRL with all the changes to top 30 etc created confusion? i used to just enjoy the presidents cup / reserves and first grade and know $$$$ come into but that system in some way seemed simple. Maybe it is the TRex coming out in me, but the NRL seems to have made some things more complex for the fan to follow.

    1. colin hussey

Its not new, the old 3rd, reserve, then under 23 and Reserves had good progression aspects associated with them and then the Under 23’s were dumped for presidents cup, then the reserves go. How many players were put out of the game when those changes took place? Not only that how many teams have been lost with the old 2nd division teams that folded?

That blog by Sixties was excellent but probably a bit hard for the NRL boffins to understand. Can the eels as such look at having their own fully eels ISP team along with Wenty also competing in the ISP?

      1. John Eel

Colin I have no doubt that if the Eels go it alone and part company with Wenty, another NRL club will swoop in and fill the vacuum

        1. sixties

Of course someone will John, but the juniors remain as Eels juniors. It would just be a commercial arrangement with some use of senior players. I can wear another club linking there. A joint venture simply hasn’t worked for the Eels and it’s silly to hang on out of fear.

    2. sixties

I long for simpler times with the lower grades too Anonymous, but that’s probably just a dream now. I have my concerns around a top 30 system and I’d like to explore better options.
