BRONCOS – 18 (Tries: J. Isaako, C. Oates, J. Roberts. Goals: J. Isaako 3 from 4)

SUNCORP STADIUM

CROWD: 21, 555

We wrap up this game as the half way point of the season has been reached. Yes, the effort was there on Thursday night but unfortunately our attack (once again) didn’t show up. It was likely lost in baggage somewhere.

You can’t deny the effort the boys are putting in. Something just isn’t clicking and it seems to be around our halves. BA switched it around for this game for Moses to be the dominant half but unfortunately it didn’t work. Poor kicking was a stand out in his game as no real attacking kicks were put in by the young half.

Is it time for a spell at Wenty for Moses and use Guth, Normy in the halves and Hayne at fullback? It won’t happen, I’m just putting it out there.

There were times early in the first half that I thought epitomised the attitude of the Eels this season. Again not denying the effort just some attitudes.

I wanted to use some vision and GIF’s but I don’t want to upset the NRL and use their vision, so I will try to explain best I can.

Just after the 5th min (5:07 to be exact) Brisbane knock a ball down and what do you see? Taka turning to the ref and waving his arm about, Ma’u does the same but then goes to the ball and is cleaned up by James Roberts. This might not seem much, but it does go to show there is no urgency, no playing to the whistle. Taka just give up on the play. What if the ref’s didn’t see it and it was play on? The 2017 Eels would have jumped on the loose ball then worried about the ref’s call. Its not much but does say a lot. Throw in Michael Jennings in getting binned early. It is frustration and more stupidity.

These things have been happening quite a lot this year for the Eels and it really needs to be stamped out. Not displaying urgency, or playing for your team mates is the opposite of the 2016 and 2017 Eels. Things don’t come easy in the NRL. Look no further than the Panthers v Dragons game to see what it takes to be at the top of the table in 2018.

So let’s look at how the game went down stats wise.

Full Time Stats

BB Team Stats PE
53 Possession (%) 47
30/36 (83) Complete/Total Sets (%) 28/40 (70)
40:04 Time – Opposition Half 41:26
15:14 Time – Opposition 20 14:12
2327 Metres Gained 2360
9 Scrum Win 6
3 Goal Line Dropout 0
9 Penalty Conceded 6
0 Forty Twenty 0

Not too bad stats wise. The completed sets were poor due to handling once again. Discipline was good and we did spend some quality time in the Broncos red zone but there was nothing to show for it. If not for an intercept then no tries would have been scored.

1st Half Stats

BB Team Stats PE
54 Possession (%) 46
16/19 (84) Complete/Total Sets (%) 14/21 (67)
22:42 Time – Opposition Half 18:31
7:18 Time – Opposition 20 7:02
1100 Metres Gained 1036
5 Scrum Win 4
3 Goal Line Dropout 0
5 Penalty Conceded 5
0 Forty Twenty 0

Hands let us down in the first half. We matched it with the Broncos, had a couple of extra sets with the ball but just dropped it. There was some good pressure with gaining 3 repeats from goal line drop outs but the team just didn’t do anything with it.

M. Jennings, was it a loose carry or a strip?? Hmmm…………..

2nd Half Stats

BB Team Stats PE
53 Possession (%) 47
14/17 (82) Complete/Total Sets (%) 14/19 (74)
17:22 Time – Opposition Half 22:55
7:56 Time – Opposition 20 7:10
1227 Metres Gained 1324
4 Scrum Win 2
0 Goal Line Dropout 0
4 Penalty Conceded 1
0 Forty Twenty 0

Again the Eels had more ball than the Broncos and again didn’t do anything with it. In winning the penalty count Parra should have applied more pressure. Winning the second half 8 – 6 was never going to be enough after that first half.

Player Stats

I’m going to change this up a little. Instead of a separate attack and defence I will put it all together and have the stats in one table so you don’t have to keep going back and forth.

MT/TI: Missed Tackles/Ineffective Tackles, E: Errors, PC: Penalties Conceded

Our whole back line (bar Moses) made 100 metres or more in a pretty impressive running game. George Jennings made a monster 204 metres in a good individual performance. The Broncos did kick a lot to him and credit to him for his return metres and not forgetting his intercept try from deep in Eels country. Well done Georgie. David Gower is just playing out of his skin with another superb performance from Gowie.

Defensively again we made nearly 50 more tackles than our opponent. This is close to 10 extra sets the Broncos had at us and again draining our fuel for attack. It’s an all too common stat for the Eels this year due to our poor handling and at times poor discipline.

Run Metres:

Eels – 1769m from 157 runs (11.3m per run) – 1 Line Break

Broncos – 1503m from 155 runs (9.7m per run) – 3 Line Breaks

Tackles:

Eels – 366

Broncos – 319

Missed Tackles/Ineffective Tackles:

Eels – 32 missed / 9 ineffective

Broncos – 34 missed / 14 ineffective

Effective Contact:

Eels – 89.9%

Broncos – 86.9%

Penalties and Errors:

Penalties Conceded:

Eels – 6

Broncos – 9

Errors:

Eels – 12

Broncos – 5

Heat Maps

Hit Ups

Most of our running was between the two 10 metres lines. Not much red in the Broncos half which shows why we couldn’t sustain our attacking pressure. Brisbane’s kicking game was on song and that virtually won them the game by keeping us in our own half.

Set Starts

Not many set starts in the Brisbane 20 area so we couldn’t build quality pressure. We were made to start our sets from a good distance away from not only the Brisbane red zone but their half as well.

Final Word

Is this a game we can look on and get a lot out of? Yes it is.

Some of our games this year are to be burned buried and never to be brought up again. But this game showed a lot of promise and a foundation to build on. There just needs to be some slight tweaks and away we go on a good run.

Not much more can be said now so we just keep the faith and stand behind the boys as they find our way out of this dark period. No use blaming this, that or the other. No use questioning and not producing answers.

Hard work is what it will take to turn our season around. If the season is gone then so be it, but we can upset the apple cart many times along the way to the semi finals for a lot of teams.

I know the boys wont give up and neither should the supporters. I read a tweet the other day and was an interview with Tim Sheens.

Tweeted by John Davidson it goes, “I asked Tim Sheens if the Wigan win might get some Hull KR fans off his back. Tim Sheens replied: I don’t really care. Fans are ones who turn up when you’re winning. Supporters are here when you don’t. I care for supporters not people who blow in and blow out the place.”

So which are you?????

Stay strong Blue and Gold Army.

Yours in Blue and Gold.

Colmac

As terrible as this year has been I’m personally stoked with the emergence of George Jennings. He had one really bad defensive lapse against the sharks but other than that hes been solid especially with his carries out of our own 20. I reckon his success on the wing is the reason we went cold on Mansor. Bit of a positive in an otherwise very negative season.

Given the lack of opportunities coming George’s way, it’s hard to find fault with his efforts.
Check out the run metres this week.
The forwards again did a good job with their carries. But as the ball moved wider, it just didn’t quite get the job done. The again, better ball security from Jenko might have literally got us across the line.

Agreed. Moses is the problem. His trying ‘harder’ is a misnomer, this is not a participation event award. His temperament, vision (lack of) and body language are very poor, you cannot train someone in these qualities, we are stuffed whilst we have him. Unfortunately if Norman is the problem, the question was dumb!

Thanks Colmac, and we never give up here. Errors have been an issue all season. We cannot changer the refs and the more i think about them the more it makes me angry. We need to eliminate errors and win the small contests.
I do not know where we go if we cannot string some wins over the origin period. Hopefully the spine for us can be consistent as fwds have been ok imo in recent weeks.
